Points all that matter for McCarthy

Points all that matter for McCarthy

475 Mick McCarthyMick McCarthy has fired Wolves up for derby action by insisting points must take priority over performances for the rest of the season.

McCarthy’s men will chase their first win in eight Premier League matches when they lock horns with rivals Birmingham at Molineux tomorrow.

And the manager admitted results must now take precedence over style as his side gear up for a winter battle against relegation.

“It’s a really important game for us,” said McCarthy. “We need to get some wins, not particularly good performances.

“It does generally go hand in hand that if you’re playing well you will get good results. But we need points. We haven’t been trying to get style over substance, that’s for sure.

“We want to win games and we haven’t managed to do it for whatever reason.

“But it’s not because of us trying to play the best football in the league. That’s not the case.

“I would prefer points rather than compliments because they don’t get you anywhere.

“Let’s remember how we played against Everton away, Aston Villa at home and Stoke City away in the second half.

“Those are the kind of performances that we need.

“It’s easy to be doom and gloom because we’ve been slapped four by Arsenal and Chelsea.

“I didn’t like it and I appreciated the fans shouting my name when we were 4-0 down. But we have to think where we were before these last two games, and it’s this one we need to concentrate on.

“The players have been excellent. Have the points reflected the performances? No, they haven’t for whatever reason.

“It’s not about bad luck. It’s either about a bad pass, bad finishing or bad defending. In between there has been some really good stuff.”

I agree with MM we need to start winning regardless. It is very nice to see good football,I love to see it, but if it means watching good football and not scoring I would prefer to see scrapping football and score.

I was impressed with the way we fought back against stoke and we could have gone on to win that game. Stearman is right lets be like the Tigers put thefight back into yourselves. I know its early days yet, but one thing I have said before the sheer guts and determination will keep us up and the scoring will come soon.It has to. We will get there and a majority of the Wolves fans are behind you Mick, I think you are doing a great job I can see you on the touchline and apart from the Chelsea game when you looked dejected and rightly so. Come on lads do not show these bigger clubs too much respect go out there and play the game with the spirit you all have and you will succeed in this division. I Believe in You.

It’s about time we played to get a result. We have been easy to beat or score against because we have tried to play pretty football. It’s no good in this league for us at this stage. 3 to 4 years in the premiership yes, but not now. Lets get physical and rough a few teams up, trouble is I don’t think we have the players to do it.

That should have been the attitude from the start of the season. We need to get as many points as possible from those ‘winable’ games.Perhaps we would not have been in the position we are in now.

Points are indeed more important now we are rooted in the bottom three, BUT you need to perform at least reasonably and consitently to get points on the board!

Nice to see some true optimism amongst all the misery doom and gloomers. Spirits were high with the three back to back draws, and did anybody really expect a single point from Arsenal or Chelsea? We are back on a level playing field tomorrow. We can take these to the cleaners if we can field our strongest side in their natural positions- such as Foley back in at right back, Kites and Jarvis on the wings. I have to admit Blues are City at the back, their middle their greatest strength, but I think we can hurt them down the wings. Blakey from on the buses is my only concern because he seems to be lacking in confidence and half a yard of his usual pace- I hope he comes alive amongst the derby atmosphere- if he could bag a crucuial goal tomorrow I think it can raise his spirits and he can knock on from their. If he is struggling I would bring the Hoff on not long into the second half, because I am concerned by the lack of opporuntities he has had so far, and if we are getting behind them on the wings, what better player do you want getting on the end of their crosses. I have faith our own defence can cope with their strikers, although I think MM and Jody would bring us a good balance of pace and maturity to deal with it. I am optimistic.
