Jovanovic chase a signal for Blues

Jovanovic chase a signal for Blues

Milan JovanovicBirmingham manager Alex McLeish believes the promising chase of Standard Liege striker Milan Jovanovic is a sign the club will punch above their weight in the transfer market.

The Blues boss has made the Serbian international a key target when the transfer market reopens for business in January, as the Premier League new-boys look to make key strides towards ensuring their survival in the millionaires playground at the end of the season.

New owner Carson Yeung completed his takeover of the club last month and has promised the manager £40million to spend which, if it comes to pass, will give him the financial muscle that many relegation rivals cannot match.

It’s the sort of position that Wolves – their opponents at Molineux on Sunday – would love to be in, and McLeish reckons it could make all the difference to Blues’ season.

He said: “I never thought we would have a chance of getting someone like Jovanovic. Having seen him in the summer I thought, yes, he’s quality.

“He’s out of contract at the end of this season and it was suggested there was an opportunity, but I don’t know. I don’t like to say too much because I don’t like disappointing the fans if players are mentioned and things then don’t happen.

“But I would definitely have Jovanovic at this club, if I could.”
