Ricky GervaisConcert review: Ricky Gervais: Science

NIA, Birmingham

By Paul Naylor

Multiple award-winning Ricky Gervais kicked off a three-date stint at Birmingham’s NIA last night, as part of the funnyman’s latest tour – Science.

Struggling with back pain, but with tongue firmly in cheek, he criticised other acts who would have cancelled a show for less.

“There’s only one person I can forgive for abandoning a sell-out tour this year, and that’s Michael Jackson,” he proclaimed, setting the tone for his set.

Surrounded by a mock-up of Frankenstein’s lab, he proceeded to “attack” Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden and contestant Susan Boyle.

And his impression of autograph hunters stalking him in the streets is sure to deter many from lurking in the shadows.

The comedian, who will perform around the world in 2010, made no apologies for his material – mocking critics with mimed complaint letter writing.

Highlights included gags about Noah’s ark, plate-spinning and an account of Ricky’s time in the audience at a Ken Dodd show.

is this the worst review ever? I could have written this without even going to a show. Shocking.
