Wolves winger Matt Jarvis has been told to follow up his improved display at Chelsea with a similar performance against Birmingham on Sunday.
The wide man was recalled for last Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge after missing the previous four games. McCarthy had felt the 23-year-old’s delivery could be better and ordered extra work on the training ground.
Jarvis responded by producing three excellent crosses against the Premier League leaders which nearly produced goals.
McCarthy seems sufficiently impressed to hand the player the chance to show off his exciting wing play again when Blues visit Molineux. With the manager only generally preferring one winger in the Premier League, Jarvis knows it’s a chance he needs to take, especially with Michael Kightly struggling to find his sharpness.
The Wolves boss said: “Jarvis was excellent and having played like that against Chelsea, let’s hope he can do the same again. I thought he was magnificent and he did exactly what I wanted him to do. The way he played went exactly the way we’d tried it in training.
“He started well and got behind their full-back, which he was always going to do because of his pace – they were never going to catch him.
“On a different day, we might have scored from his deliveries and then it could have looked a lot better. He went back to his natural position and did really well.”
Jarvis is determined not to rest on his laurels if he gets the nod against Blues.
He said: “It was nice to get back in the team against Chelsea and I feel I put some good deliveries in which set up a couple of good chances.I was pleased with my contribution but, like everyone, disappointed with the result.
“We’ve got a strong squad now and you have to take your chance when it comes along. Hopefully I’ve done that.”
