There is a Black Country derby on the cards next Saturday night when Tipton’s Rob Doody and Brierley Hill’s Martin Gordon collide in a boxing showdown at Dudley’s The Venue.
The welterweight duo make the three-odd mile trip to neutral ground for a welterweight contest over six, two minute rounds – with Gordon protecting a two-fight winning streak against his unbeaten opponent.
Doody warns that home ties will count for nothing when the bell rings.
The 28-year-old said: “It’s going to be a case of wrong time, wrong place for Martin I am afraid. After this fight, a lot of people will be taking me seriously. You are going to see the best Rob Doody that you have seen so far, it will be all business and I will get the job done.”
The fight has been in the pipeline for much of the year but is now set to finally go ahead, and Gordon warns he won’t be backing down.
The 27-year-old said: “The real Martin Gordon is starting to come out now, I have got my confidence back and I wouldn’t have took this fight if I believed I couldn’t win.
“Of course it’s personal, there are bragging rights at stake because there is only five miles between our towns. I wouldn’t want to be the one on the losing end.”
