Brunt tips Jara for the top flight

leicester0 Albion winger Chris Brunt has tipped Gonzalo Jara as a future Premier League star after hailing the club for unearthing a hidden gem.

Brunt saluted the Chilean utility man as a transfer market “steal” and pinpointed his flexibility as a potentially key ingredient in the Baggies’ push for promotion.

Jara has become an instant hit with fans since his £1.4million move from Santiago-based Colo Colo and has already starred in five different positions for Roberto Di Matteo’s side.

Now Brunt, who returned from injury to see Jara score his first Baggies goal in last week’s 2-1 win at Leicester, has led the praise for his team-mate.

The winger said: “Gonzalo seems to be a bit of a utility man. He looks like an absolute steal, so credit to whoever scouted him and signed him for the football club.

“He’s a great signing for the club and I think we’ve done very well to get him. Playing in the Premier League last season, you see players week in, week out and I think he’d be very comfortable in any Premier League team.

“Hopefully he can help us, by playing wherever, to get us back into the Premier League this season because he’s definitely got the qualities to play there himself.”

Jara has played in both full-back positions, at centre-back, as a holding midfielder and a wide-right player in his three months at the Hawthorns.

Brunt reveals the Chile international has already become a popular figure in the Hawthorns dressing room despite his limited grasp of English.

He said: “It’s not very often you get players like that. Michael Appleton described him as a Phil Neville-type player, who can play anywhere along the back and midfield. Those sort of players don’t come along very often. We don’t really have anyone else like that in the squad.

“It’s a huge bonus, because a lot of clubs have to go out and get emergency loan players but when you’ve got someone like Gonzalo, who can slot into four different positions comfortably, it saves you using up loans.

“He’s knows some basics in English and he tags along with Filipe Teixeira, because they know the same language.”

Think back to the transfer window when we were going to sign him, then it was called off and then all of a sudden it was all back on again.

Did JP say we’re all spent out, then RDM pushed it through knowing how good he was? I suppose we’ll never know, but I’m as happy as hell that we finally did sign him up.

Nedball,

I seem to remember it being reported that it was called off as the Jara money was the last of the transfer budget and RDM wanted to concentrate on getting a specialised centre-back first, then re-visited when that never came about. I could be wrong though!!

Either way, who cares, great signing. It’s just a shame we missed out on no.1 target Karl Henry.
