Zubar hailed for setting the standard

WOLVES V SWINDON 10 GD 25Wolves defender Ronald Zubar has been hailed for setting the standard for right-backs this season.

Pacy Zubar has kept Kevin Foley and Richard Stearman on the sidelines recently after finally making his Premier League debut in the 1-1 draw at Everton, despite impressive performances from both in the position.

Player of the Year Foley starts for the reserves tonight against Birmingham at AFC Telford (7pm), while Stearman has now taken his chance on the opposite flank at left-back.

The versatile former Leicester defender believes Zubar has shown the way, despite conceding an own goal in Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Arsenal.

He said: “It was testament to how well ‘Zubes’ has done and the rest of the back four that it’s been so hard for any of us to get back playing.

“You only have to look at Kevin Foley who was Player of the Year and he’s being kept out through no fault of his own, because the boys have been doing so well.

“It’s made it tough and is still making it tough for any of us to get the shirt.”

We are not keeping clean sheets – not to be expected against Arsenal – and I therefore think we need to look closely at the defence. Is it time to play Foley at right back, Craddock and Zubar centrally and Mancienne at left back? There is no doubt left back is a major concern as both Mancienne and Stearman are not left footers!
We must get it right for Blues,Bolton and Burnley. These games will make or break the season.

He has good pace and strength and made some good interceptions before Arsenal scored. But will he be reliable enough in the middle? Or will he make mistakes in an unforgiving league? Before he signed for us a number of people posted on this site about Zubars own goals on U tube.I always think of Ron Atkinson’s comments;the first thing you should look for in a central defender is reliability. Personally I’d keep Zubar at right back for at least the time being.
