Vehicles are said to be thundering through a sleepy Staffordshire village at speeds of almost 100mph – despite a 30mph limit and sparking safety fears.
Police in Enville, near Stourbridge, have recorded traffic on A458 at up to 98mph.
Residents are calling for speed-activated signs to be installed and are being backed by MP Sir Patrick Cormack. The South Staffordshire MP is warning there could be a tragedy unless something is done.
In a report in the village magazine, the Enville Pigeon, he writes: “The parish council is calling for speed-activated signs to be placed on the approach to the village.
“I am throwing my weight behind that request and trying to persuade a reluctant county council that unless something along these lines is done we are going to have a tragedy.
“The juggernauts thunder through, the motorcycles race each other. I am told that one car was actually recorded doing 98mph.”
Enville Parish Council has written to Staffordshire County Council about the problem. Parish chairman Richard Jones said he was worried at the speeds police had recorded drivers going through the village.
A county spokeswoman said: “We are analysing data provided by the police as well as our own data. We have to look at a strict set of criteria when deciding where we put vehicle activated signs.”

Like the A449 the A458 is deadly. One part is far too fast and the rest is winding, narrow and very busy.I think likewise that it is high time a better designed road was built to replace the part from the Stewponey to Six Ashes.A few years back my father stopped because he saw lights coming back towards one of the bends from
the bank. When he got there it was my own brother who had come off the bend.Fortunately he was very lucky.Ever since I have dreaded that part of the road.

It is not speed that kills but idiots. Bruce if you cannot hack the pace on the A458, maybe you would be better suited using public transport.
Why should the rest of us have to suffer even more speed restrictions because there’s a few idiots on the roads that shouldn’t be allowed behind a steering wheel.
