Wolves today insisted competing with the English elite must remain secondary to Premier League survival.
UEFA president Michel Platini is targeting English clubs who have built up a mountain of debt in the pursuit of Premier and European glory.
And he has threatened to exclude clubs from UEFA competitions if they continue to ride roughshod over the wishes of European Football’s governing body.
Saturday’s opponents Arsenal have £416m debt, Chelsea, who Wolves play after the Gunners, owe £701m – all through owner Roman Abramovich’s interest-free loans – while Manchester United are £699m in the red.
By contrast, Wolves have no debt and around £25m in the bank following the influx of the Sky TV money triggered by promotion, and the takeover by Steve Morgan in August 2007.
Boss Mick McCarthy has been bullish this week in his desire to compete on the pitch with Arsenal.
But chief executive Jez Moxey admits it will be a very long time – if ever – before Wolves compete with the ‘big four’ in the transfer market.
“We are very comfortable with our own club in that we’re in a very healthy, sound position in our evolution,” said Moxey today.
“From our point of view, while we’re aware of the national and international issues of football, the most important thing for Wolverhampton Wanderers is not considering whether we can compete with clubs such as Arsenal and Chelsea, or whether we’re concerned with any potential rules or regulation changes to be brought in by the central organisations, whether that’s the Premier League, UEFA or FIFA.
“Our main priority is to concentrate on staying in the Premier League and developing as a Premier League club in the medium term. That’s all we’re focused on. We can’t change the world.”
Wolves could take many years to reach the levels of the ‘big four’, but Moxey insists they must remain realistic.
“Life is not fair and life is not even,” he said.
“Everyone knows the current size of Wolverhampton Wanderers and the current size of Arsenal.
“We are the underdog and we know that and we are embracing it and we will do whatever we can to get into the best position we can.
“We will give it our best and as long as we do, that’s all anyone can ask.”
Platini said this week: “You must not spend more money than you receive.
“We have three years to regulate the situation. The idea is not to kill the clubs but to help them have better balances.”

And this is why Wolves will never be a top 4 club or even stay for a long while in the Prem while Mr Moxey is there. I am afraid that in this league money buys success.

Well if we arn’t in the red, spend the cash on a left-back and left-winger, Mick!

Will Platini take his beloved Juve to task over their crippling debts? Or Real Madrid? No, doubt it.
He just wants to rape every big English club going as he hates the fact we’re a powerful football nation.
Reduce the foreigners rule, embargo Chelsea, ridicule our World Cup bids, threaten to ban us from the World Cup if we ever invade the pitch (while Italy supporters kill eachother)
Keep trying Michel.

The top clubs have for some time now become the ‘toys’ of immensely wealthy men.
When faced with the like of Chelsky and Man U’s purchacing power small clubs cannot hope to compete, we all know that!
Do we want to see our club run in that way? I for one don’t!
Whilst I have no regard for Platini and his anti English stance. I can understand his attitude in this matter.
In France if you want a loan you must first prove that you are able to repay it. It used to that way here look what happened when we stopped thinking that way.
No club should be allowed to run at a loss!
Every club at the end of the season should have to submit balance sheets showing that they are at least breaking even. Only in this way will we ever get anywhere near parity. The longed for level playing field for all clubs.
End of rant.
Up The Wolves
PS it is not how much you pay the players or how much they cost it is the teamwork and attitude of the eleven on the field that day as Wolves are showing this year.

It’s sad when success is merely not being relegated. In my youth teams like derby and Forest got promoted and won championships. Liverpool were dominant – but every season there was a possibility of someone winning the big one. Sky money has ruined the English competition with the vast amount of it going overseas when the players leave the country. These players undermine the potential of this country to produce our England players.
If managers have to develop their own players instead of simply buying from abroad our England team would be better than it is. Who is going to replace Terry and Rio. Lampard has no near rival and Rooney will not sustain a long career because of the nature of his game.
I hope Wolves survive but this season does not have the excitment of seeking promotion. I think clubs who aspire to promotion every year – but never quite get there – give fans their money worth.

D Forster…No 1. Plenty of clubs have splashed the cash (Charlton, Sheff Wed, Leics, Derby, Southampton etc etc) and look whats happened to them.
The club needs a Moxey. His priority is to see the club survive first and then keep in the premiership. He is doing a great job as are the other two M’s. he should be applauded by all fans.

Once again Mr Moxey is living in cloud cuckoo land.
He and Platini are living some sort of fantasy if they think you are ever going to qualify for Europe by showing bank statements instead of finishing in the top 4 or winning 1 of the cups.
These clubs are bigger than that and had an overdraft for many years, I am not saying get into that state but £25m in the bank is no good to us, it should be on the pitch but instead of spending it in the summer which is what should have happened, he is bragging about not spending Premiereship cash on Premiership players.
Spend it in January or else it will be Championship here we come!
But I suppose he could always do a lap of honour holding the bank statements aloft at the end of the season.
What a Hero!!

Platini’s trying to make it more of a level playing field, good luck to him. We don’t need the weary predictability of the same teams competing at the top season after season. Who knows maybe Liverpool will do a Leeds and collapse under a mountain of debt and that will usher in some well overdue reform. I suspect if Brian Clough was managing an average Premier League outfit, he’d sink into anonymity.
I see Michael is talking the talk to yhe E & S again. Let’s hope it isn’t another kiss of death.

These comments are by no way aimed at Wolves, our problem now is we dont have enough quality to compete due to the fact that we refuse to spend ant money. Just look at Stoke who brought Huth and Tuncay for £10m, they will be in the Prem next year and will receive the benfits of being there.
We need 2 or 3 £5m plus quality signings to guarntee our safety, my fear is that coupled with Moxeys tight fisted attitude and Mick “I love a tryer” attitude we will end up as another also ran. We have the support and the money now, sort it out.

If those in great debt are banned from europeon competitions it should make it a more level playing field as the big 4 will be starved of income and the worlds best players. Up the wolves!

Keep it up Jez,
As E11 has said, he has the interests of the club at heart and doesn’t want to run us into the ground, for the people who think we should spend all the money we have now on players..you are idiots, if we were to spend it and get relegated we will have, for example, 2 x £12.5m players on our books, their value/our power to demand a high fee would be reduced on relegation so if we sold them we’d lose money. If we didn’t/couldn’t sell them they’d be on £60k a week and the revenue we make in the Championship couldnt sustain that outgoing.
I don’t know what the panic is with a left back and a left midfielder, I agree that a few of the lads have had poor games at times but before the season kicked off we all said our aim was to stay in top flight, now we’re in there and sitting above the drop zone people want more! Lets try and be realistic and get behind the lads.
It’s not exactly economics people, just common sense.

Yes Wolves cannot go down the Leeds/Southampton route but we should not be gloating on what we have in the bank.
First and foremost we must ensure that we stay in this league. We definitely need 2 or 3 players in January and are going to need to spend £7.5 – 10 million most probably. Blues – one of our nearest rivals – are eyeing up Davis and Boyd from Rangers!

Some of the comments are here are just STUPID… The likes of Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool etc have had YEARS of success, meaning they are the top clubs…
How some of you think Wolves will be challenging for the top 4 is beyond me… GET REALISTIC…
This season is all about staying in the Premier League, as next season may be also!!!
You just have to look at Newcastle, Leeds etc… They threw money to try and challenge, and look where they are now…
Success is something you build not BUY…
Proper Wolves fans realise this, those fans who have jumped on the bandwagon this year don’t live in the real world…
Go and support Chelski, or Man U, if you do not believe the way Wolves are being run is the best thing for the future of the club.

magical Mick and His Mythical powers of being able to spot a bargain through his team of Super Scouts have put the Wolves in, what must be, a unique position of financial stability. Who wants to do a Leeds or a West Brom? and if FIFA should insist on clubs balancing their books, then WOLVES will have a head start and Players, who have always loved, respected and revered The Mighty Mick McCarthy (Players like Rooney, Fabregas, Torres and Drogba will be knocking on The Molineux door begging Moxey to alow them in on the structured pay system.
Players from all the Top Teams respect Mick and can often be read in the national press praising him and wishing they could afford to play for the Wolves

It took almost two months to get Doyle through the door, and as good a player as he is, i fear he’s far from the type of player you think we should be signing. Why would the top top players come to a club like Wolves that is in with as decent a shout of relegation as they are survival ? You have to prove you can handle this league before the top players come. If you dont like that, then chip off old boy.

You can never hope tho change the mindset of the clowns who believe that we have to get into debt to be a big player in the Prem.
Until we can get attendances of over 40000 we cannot nor will ever be able to raise the money to buy the number of good/great players we would require to reach this level.
Even in our greatest period 50/60’s we averaged 34000 (mostly standing up). We are a small club with a great history but not being a big city club we cannot make it.
Just get real some of you.
Be thankful that we are where we are with no debt. We will always have a roller coaster ride. The same as all the other smallis clubs that cannot get over 40000 attendances.
Even if our Mr Morgan gets the ground extensions to around 40000 we will not fill it every home game. We cannot sell all our season tickets wit a 29000 attendance figure.
Get real you morons!

Comments 5 & 6 from E11Wolf- awful and brilliant ‘respectively’. You claim, quote, ‘I think clubs who aspire to promotion every year – but never quite get there – give fans their money worth.’ I can only compare that to making love to your wife and, well, stopping just as she is reaching heaven. Every time. I think there is a very odd psychological thinking underlying your theory of repeated disapointment. There is no fun or excitement in that for me. We had this horror throughout the Hayward era, getting all excited, and falling flat on our faces at the end. It came to the point where we expected to fail, despite small amounts of hhoping for the best.
Thankfully, you redeem yourself with comment #6. I would happily watch us at least play the likes of Manchester, Liverpool, Tottenham and so on week in, week out, finish mid table maybe, enjoy a decent cup run here and there, and keep the club alive, than a/ bobble around the edge of the play off places grappling it out with the Rotherhams and the Donacasters or b/ spend 200 million to try and force our way into the top four, and end up where Leeds are now- still trying to recover from financial stupidity ten years ago. Our club is in the best hands it has been in for years; from the top to the bottom, and particularly the playing squad, which remember, was asse, bled by the three who for reasons beyond me continue to receive stick.

I would not let some of those who post on here near my household budget, let alone that of a football club. Very interesting debate going on here-is Moxey doing the right thing by doing a Gordon Brown Mr Prudence,Or should we splash the cash to try and ensure survival. In my opinion it has been blatently obvious ever since we attained promotion that a quality recognised left back was required. This coupled with the need for at least one other quality Striker would suggest that we need to invest some more of the 25 million in the January window.Even if say 10/12 million was spent that would still leave 15/13 million, add on the Sky payment for 2010/2011 and we would still be well positioned for whatever lies ahead.
Most of the comments above are talking sense regarding Mr Moxey’s tight reign on finances. We only have to remember the 80s in Wolves history to see what can happen to a club. Today we have other examples like Hull and Portsmouth who bought expensive players left right and centre and are now in financial difficulties.
Thus we must be greatful to Messre Moxey, Morgan and McCarthy who are building a team to cut it in the Premiership as teams don’t become successful overnight by spending big. Another two examples are Newcastle and Leeds while Southampton and Charlton who may have paid big wages while in the Premiership now find themselves in League I – The old Division III.
I’m sure that most Wolves fans prefer to have a team built gradually and not buy a new one overnight.
If in the 80s Wolves didn’t squander the fee received for Steve Daley to buy Andy Gray and instead put some of it on the new John Ireland Stand we may not have witnessed the decline of the team down to the bottom of the Football League.
Its true Andy scored the winner in the League Cup Final against Forest but anyone could have scored an easy goal like that.
We want to see the team establish itself in the Premiership and from what we have seen so far it is not impossible to achieve this aim.

Once again there is far too much drivel and negativity on here from people who probably don’t even go to games.
The 3 M’s are running the club sensibly, on the pitch we have a group of players who are proud to pull on the shirt. Most of whom are young and have many good years ahead of them. I’ve been to the majority of our games this season and have really enjoyed watching them.
Its absolutely not realistic for us to throw money we haven’t got chasing something that even Man City will struggle to achieve having spent £200m or whatever it is. Lets keep building, moving forward as a club and enjoy the journey!
I agree with Moxey, & I think the 3M’s are going about sustainable success the right way.
According to Celtic chairman earlier this week, (defending their spending ‘The Mowbury way!’)…’it’s not an act of character, courage or leadership to get into debt – it’s an act of moral cowardice.’
Exactly.
Even Man U & Arsenal have had to let financial decisions dictate their teams.
Would Man U really have sold Ronaldo if they didn’t need his 80M, or would they have let Tevez go to Man City if money wasn’t an issue? They built their team round those two.
Arsenal have their own young & hungry policy as even they realise they have to build a young team ‘cheaply’ rather than buy & pay excessive wages for the superstars they really can’t afford. Of cause, their ‘cheap’ is a little different to Moxey’s ‘cheap’!
Liverpool seem to be heading for a Newcastle & Leeds like collapse. They are living on a knife edge and simply have to stay top 4 and be successful in Europe just to keep their dept the same. If their income drops they will be in real trouble.
Even Abramovich isn’t as rich as he used to be since the credit cruch, and could easily grow tired of throwing endless money and seeing no significant progress.
West Ham always finish somewhere between 9th & 11th every season but since their Icelandic credit cruch debts…what do you know, they are in the relegation zone.
Blues & Porstsmouth just about scraped by with their desirable new owners, & Hull will be hoping for their bail out pretty soon while they are clinging to their only asset…which is their Premiership status.
We are in a highly desirable position…but only if we stay up. Hopefully we’ve saved some for the January transfer window…ready for the final push…
…so Morgan, Mick & Moxey…read comment 2, you know it makes sense!

17, those players you’ve metioned would be off abroad long before they “condescended” to come to us!
That’s the problem – we have gone from one extreme (wage capping set at far too low a level) to the other (players on £100,000+ a week) and the world governing body – in fact ALL governing bodies – are too weak to stand up to the big clubs, and the “sport” of football has died, long time since!
All we have been left with is the “business” of football, and unless our club gets massive investment a la Man City, all we have to look forward to is an annual battle to avoid relegation / relegation itself.
Unless FIFA, UEFA and the FA grow some, this sport is no more – it is an Ex – Sport!

Brilliant posts especially No5. We’ve had this debate on our pages over recent years. The idiots that blame Jeremy Peace and Jez Moxey for not spending their clubs into potential oblivion, fail to see the real problem.
English football is in a very flawed state at the moment, similar to the one the World’s financial system has been in. Everyone trying to spend more to keep their heads above water and ignoring the fact that it’s all being done on money they don’t have.
Sky are to blame for fuelling the need for the PL. The big three at the time the PL was born Man Ure, L’pool and Arsenal were guilty of seeing a way that they could syphon most of the money into their own bank vaults in the way the Russian trawlers do when fishing, with no thought for the future. But we the football fans are most guilty. We have fallen for it hook line and sinker. We complain about players being on inflated wages and not putting the effort in, then we demand even bigger money signings. Blues fans (not picking on them just using them as an example,) don’t care about where the current owners money comes from, they were happy to get rid of Gold and Sullivan because they didn’t have enough money, regardless of the good things they’ve done for the club.
I understand the frustration but it’s no good blaming Steve Morgan and Jeremy Peace because they don’t have enough money and are not willing to bankrupt our clubs.
