Wandering days over for Halford

Greg Halford of WolvesWolves utility man Greg Halford has insisted his wandering days are over.

The player has found himself out of the team for the last two games and, in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Stoke, failed to appear for the first time in the Premier League this season after being an unused substitute.

But the 24-year-old was back in the first team for last night’s 2-1 friendly win at Wexford Youths, playing right-back.

And Halford, who slapped in a transfer request at Colchester then left Reading and Sunderland after barely a handful of games, is happy to play the ‘long game’ at Molineux.

He said: “It’s been unfortunate, but I’m at Wolves for the long haul. I see my future here – this is definitely the right club for me.

“There are great lads around me and the management is top class, and hopefully the fans can warm to me like they did at Sheffield United. There are a lot of players like me here who are keen to make their mark in the Premier League – that’s where the manager has done well.

“Everyone has fitted in quickly and it’s been easy to bed in. Playing in the Premier League is every youngster’s dream.”

Halford has already played right-back, right midfield, left midfield and centre midfield since joining Wolves for £2m in the summer.

With Richard Stearman replacing George Elokobi at left -back for the first time in a Wolves shirt, Halford’s versatility could be a key factor.

He said: “We’ve been unlucky with injuries with Michael Kightly at the beginning, then Kevin Foley and Richard Stearman and I’ve had to fill in different positions, but I think I’ve settled reasonably well.

“But I always knew it was going to be a tough challenge to stay in the team. Any position is fine and I’m just happy to be battling for a place.”
