I didn’t deserve axe says Shorey

viola2Villa defender Nicky Shorey has claimed he didn’t deserve to be dropped for last week’s derby by insisting – ‘I have done nothing wrong.’

The left-back almost joined tomorrow’s opponents Portsmouth on deadline day, only to opt against a move and then had to make way for new signing Stephen Warnock in Sunday’s 1-0 win at Birmingham.

But, after helping Villa record three straight wins and earning praise from his team-mates for his high-quality displays, Shorey admits he was surprised to lose his place.

He said: “I wasn’t fearing the worst last Sunday. I thought I’d be playing but I wasn’t. I feel I haven’t really done a lot wrong. But that’s football.

“You just have to do your best when you get called upon and see where it takes you.”

The England international has spoken for the first time about his Fratton Park loan move falling through.

Shorey insists he has no regrets over snubbing the top-flight’s bottom team, despite being relegated to the bench last weekend.

He said: “The interest from Portsmouth came really late in the window. I didn’t have a lot of time to think about it and I decided it wasn’t the right thing for me.

“I’d come off the back of a few good wins and I was in the team playing well I thought.

“I made that decision and I’m happy with it.”
