Former England boss after Cech

FC Twente are ready to offer Albion Dutch striker Romano Denneboom as bait to land defender Marek Cech.

Reports in Holland claim Twente boss Steve McClaren is set to offer Denneboom, plus £500,000 in cash, for Slovakia international Cech.

The Dutch club remain anxious to lure Cech to the Netherlands, but Albion are keen to keep the 26-year-old left-back at the Hawthorns for the new Championship season.

Cech remains the Baggies’ only senior left-back and head coach Roberto Di Matteo is reluctant to part with him, with just 10 days to go until the start of the new season.

However, the player has been non-committal on his own future, triggering continued interest from former England coach McClaren.

Now reports in Holland suggest he will try to use the 6ft 2in Denneboom to persuade Albion to sell Cech.

The Baggies are short of cover in attack with Ishmael Miller on the long-term injury list and Roman Bednar still suspended.

Denneboom, aged 28, has one full cap for the Dutch national team and has played in the top flight in his homeland for Heerenveen, Willem II, NEC Nijmegen and Twente, for whom he scored nine times in 58 games last season.

Albion have also been linked with a move for unsettled Wigan striker Marlon King, although the Express & Star understands he is not a major target.

Other reports claim the Baggies have made an enquiry about signing Germany international David Odonkor from Real Betis – but the deal is unlikely to happen.

Speculation in Spain suggests Racing Santander are interested in Albion’s record signing Borja Valero, but Albion will knock back any attempt to land the £4.7m signing ‘on the cheap’.
