Di Matteo expects Mulumbu to deliver

Saturday 11th July 2009, 11:01AM BST.

mulumbuRoberto Di Matteo today tipped Youssouf Mulumbu to improve at Albion after making the Frenchman has second Baggies signing.

Mulumbu completed a permanent £175,000 permanent move from Paris Saint Germain late yesterday after ending last season on loan at The Hawthorns.

The 22-year-old midfielder has penned a one-year contract with a further year’s option in the club’s favour.

He became Di Matteo’s second signing of the week following Simon Cox’s £1.5m switch from Swindon.

Di Matteo said: “Youssouf didn’t get an extended run last year due to his injuries but he did well when he was in the team.

“I saw him play for West Brom last season and I’m delighted he’s now joined us on a permanent basis.

“He could be the player we’re looking for in defensive midfield.

“He’s still young and I’m sure he will get better the more games he plays for us.”

DR Congo international Mulumbu spent the final five months of last season on loan at Albion from PSG but his first-team involvement was restricted by injury.

He did not make his Premier League debut until April, when he figured in the 2-2 draw at Portsmouth.

His first start came the following month in the 1-0 defeat at Tottenham and he made a total of six appearances, including two starts.

    The Real Bully Hoo.

I’ve been away on holiday for a couple of weeks and it’s all happened. New manager, new striker, yet the media seem to be only interested in the ‘big four’ and Newcastle, so it’s been hard work keeping up with the news.

Getting up to date with the news on here, it’s good to see that the Peace out brigade haven’t run out of steam. You have to agree with them that we need to return to the good old days of Dennis Smith and Bobby Gould type appointments.
Having said that, I wasn’t overwhelmed at the thought of RDM but as i’ve said before, I’m the world’s worse at picking managers, I wasn’t overwhelmed at Gary Megson or Tony Mowbray either and they didn’t do too bad did they?

Yes he is unproven but if he was an established top class manager we wouldn’t get him would we?
The ‘glass half empty crew’ are already saying ‘what if we do well? he’ll be off to Chelsea or Italy. For this to happen we would be in the PL, what a disaster.

As others have said, we have to get behind him even if we have a bad start. Remember, when Johnny Giles first came, we were bottom early in the season and still went up.

I’ve mellowed a bit on Tony Mowbray, yes he let us down, a bit like finding that the Granny you’d always loved and trusted was really Rose West. I feel quite sorry for him now. If Celtic go out of Europe early, there’s not much left for them to play for. It’s a bit like the boat race, unless Celtic sink, they’re going to finish as runners up at worst.

Seems that Robbo has gone. I think it’s for the best. If we go up he’d be a year older and would struggle in the PL. He’s alienated a lot of the fans with short memories. Remember he’s not an Albion fan, he gave us good service, never ducked a challenge and never gave less than 100% effort. He’ll always be an Albion hero to me and I’ll always acknowledge him when he returns as I’m sure most genuine fans will.

Great to see that Appy has been promoted. another real genuine player who would have gone on to be an Albion legend had it not been for the injury.

Can’t wait for the first game.

Just watched the ‘Albion on tour. Day one.’ video. Apart from the fact that Tony Mowbray still seems to be our manager according to the opening, that nice man Steve Madeley then goes on to tell us that Robbo has gone and Jonno wants to go. Where does this come from? the last time the E&S ran a story on JG, it was him saying that he wanted to stay, even if we went down. Has Madeley anything to base this on or is it a typical bit of pre season stirring?

PS Although he wasn’t a favourite with us, terrible news about John Hartson. Wish him all the best.
