Gerrard bid rejected by Saddlers

WALSALL FC 42 SL 13Walsall have rejected a £200,000 bid from Scunthorpe United for Anthony Gerrard – sparking an auction for the wantaway star.

The Saddlers are braced for a fight to keep their transfer-listed defender with a host of clubs, including Charlton, primed to firm up their interest.

The Express & Star understands Gerrard is poised to leave the Banks’s Stadium within the next two weeks but Scunthorpe, last season’s League One play-off final winners, are an unlikely destination.

The club said: “Walsall Football Club can today confirm that a £200,000 written offer from Scunthorpe United for Anthony Gerrard has been rejected, as it does not meet our valuation of a player who is attracting plenty of interest from elsewhere.”

Gerrard was the subject of an unsuccessful bid from Southampton last August, but has been watched by League One rivals Charlton and Championship side Coventry.

The Addicks are desperate for defensive reinforcements following Mark Hudson’s switch to Cardiff.

Former Everton trainee Gerrard made 44 appearances for the Saddlers last season, even captaining the side despite being on the transfer list.

He has made 182 appearances, including an eight game loan spell, and scored seven goals since signing on a free transfer from the Toffees in 2005.

If this guy goes, I dread to think what next season will be like, replacing him will be an issue, and with the quietness of the transfers into the club, the squad is looking very depleted.

‘Braced for a fight’ to get as much money as possible out of his transfer and spend as little as possible replacing him, that’s what I think you meant to write.

There is plenty of money coming into the club this close season through Dann sell-on clause and Gerrard’s likely transfer, no excuses not to spend some money on the squad.

Bonser not grabbing the first offer that comes along? Is the man not well?

About time we stood up and said “No, he is under contract and not going unless we the price we want”.

In my view, nothing less than £400k should be listened too.

If the saddlers had made a proper effort, like proper clubs, then maybe AG would stay with us. Alas, the policy of “buy no-one, sell the kids, just don’t get us relegated” leaves us starting the next season much like the last….and the one before………and the one before that……….and….(oh, you know what i mean!). A pre-season without an actual team? – oh how enthused i am! :-(

If he does go, and he probably will, then we need to start using this money to offer people 2 year + contracts. Then someone might be interested in coming to us. I’m not too fussed about spending money on players as there are plenty of good free transfers out there. Not even a free transfer is going to want to come to us if we offer him minimum wage for a year.

Does it really matter how much we get for AG £1000 or £1000000 it wont be given to team building?

The money will be wisely spent putting in swings, a roundabout and a sand pit into training facilities in order to help the team for the coming seasons!

    4. Saddler: £400k are you out of your mind? He’s worth alot more than that. We never get what the true value of our players from other sides.

If AG played for Crewe, they’d value him at £1.5million and they’d get it. Us, happy to snap up the sniff of new notes when they come our way. AG is will worth £750k and above – and I hope he goes on to a bigger club because he deserves it.

Lets be honest here – Walsall FC have known about his desire to play for a bigger club and they’ve had time to prepare a replacement…….have they done anything about it ?
