Friday 19th June 2009, 11:50AM BST.
Wolves are tracking Villa centre-back Zat Knight to strengthen their defence for the Premier League.
Villa have confirmed Wolves have enquired about the availability of the 28-year-old, who signed from Fulham for £4million two years ago.
But any transfer is some way off taking place, with Villa boss Martin O’Neill wanting to strengthen his own defence before allowing anyone to leave.
Villa have seen defensive kingpin and captain Martin Laursen retire and key midfielder Gareth Barry leave for Manchester City.
Any more departures would represent a PR own goal.
O’Neill only has Curtis Davies, Carlos Cuellar and Knight as his centre-backs at the moment.
Wolves have already been gazumped by Birmingham for the £3.5million signing of Scott Dann, after agreeing a fee with Coventry.
And earlier this summer they missed out on Liverpool’s Bayer Leverkusen-bound Sami Hyypia, before later pulled out of a deal for Standard Liege giant Oguchi Onyewu.
Inevitably, they have also been linked with a host of potential names as they seek to strengthen for the Premier League.
West Ham’s Calum Davenport and Wigan’s Emmerson Boyce are two of those under scrutiny.
Both have a year left on their contracts and would be available at prices Wolves can afford.
Davenport insists he will leave the Hammers this summer and was wanted by Sunderland – where he finished the season on loan – but that was before new boss Steve Bruce took over.
Now Wigan are near to completing the £5million signing of Richard Dunne from Manchester City.
Boyce has been negotiating a new contract since before the end of the season.
Middlesbrough’s Emmanuel Pogatetz is another name that has crossed Wolves’ radar.
Manager Mick McCarthy is seeking competition for Jody Craddock – who is expected to sign a one-year deal to stay – Christophe Berra, Richard Stearman and Neill Collins.
Michael Mancienne is a long-standing target, but Wolves know they will have to wait until towards the end of the transfer window for any headway from Chelsea.

ZAK KNIGHT!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
What is going on???? My Villa fans I work with are literally on the floor laughing! They tell me he is error prone, slow, woeful distribution. If this is the level of signings wolves are going for then I am sorry I can see us doing what we did last time we were up. Crying out loud why are they going down the cheap option?
We need to show some intent and make a statement this season. Moxey said on record they will not make the same mistakes as the last time,,,,, Well this is a repeat of last time.
Knight = Oleg. Wolves in my opinion should go for Wheater, He is a warhorse, strong in defence, good tackle, premiership experience and a leader of men. I dont quite understand this approach, anyone please explain it to me.

In response to the first comment – O’neil has told us to get lost and forget about Knight. Please Mick, take his advice. He’s bang on average!

Well the Milias deal looks on dodgy ground now the problems have surfaced with his suspended sentance in Serbia cant see them getting a work permit, still we have managed to sign a 37 year old player Reading no longer want. What happened to the start we were supposed to have in signing new players, looks like Bham have got the jump on us.
its a complete waste of time! moxey knows he is on big wages and knows we won’t pay them, so this is just more spin and lies! also i have just read the news about milijas’ conviction & again moxey knows he now has no chance of gaining a work permit, so that is now dead aswell! this is a joke!
So are we going to sign anybody?

go for richard dunne. ZK is not the way forward. he is lacking in composure!

You wolves fans believe everything your Manager Jez and his assistant MM tell you. You will not sign any quality players, you will be down by Xmass, S Ward will be your new Captain and collins your best player. You have to admit you are good for a Laugh. Never mind you might sign some star players from Down under. You are a Joke and should not be in the Prem

wolves are a joke in the transfer period birms are gonna put us to shame they have already splashed out over 10 mil wolves are so cheappp they need to spend some money this is such a repeat of last time we went up they said were after experience we sign milijas thats if he gets a work permit he aint got 1 bit of experience that pile of crap from reading and were being linked with andrew surman yh loving how u have over done it there wolves the experience there is over the top cant believe it face it stays like this were coming straight back down and he is on about getting in compitition for our defenders none of our defenders will do anything in the premiership accept foley and he is gonna struggle berra 2.5 mil what a waste of money! buy some players wolves that are decent starting to annoy everyone badly!

Knight reminds me of Bramble can be great but makes stupid mistakes that cost goals. Saying that bramble has matured this year and made fewer mistakes.
Update regarding loyalty points.
There is a campaign on facebook. If you search Wolves loyalty points something will appear. Within one day 100 people joined. So more we can get to support idea the better. Have a look if you a chance.

Be patient lads. The three M’s (Moxey, Morgan and Mick) are scouring the world looking for players that are ‘the right stuff’. Wolves never say anything and the E/S are just guessing.
We will get tyhe glorious six players and we WILL be pleased.
Have faith will thrive

Martin O’Neill will not sell and thank god we will not have this donkey on our books.
For all the good work they have done with recruiting players they from time to time come up with stupid choices like him. Villa’s form dipped when Laursen was injured and surprise surprise Davies and Knight were the centre halves!
He wont sign for Wolves. Lets get Callum Davenport and Mancienne and go to the steptoes and put in a 1.5mil bid for Olsson as he wants out. Stearman and Berra are quality and although Craddock is slow I think he will be vital. Neil collins off the bench to head some winners!
Richard Dunne!!! OMG ! He’s worse than Knight. He scores more own goals than George Berry !
Can’t believe the players we are being linked with! Decent players like Dunne, Davis, O’neil, who are all available, appear to be going to other less than average teams.
Seems to be a bit of a shambles really, however I don’t know why the Blouses are getting excited about a £9mill, untried player. Could be a big loss of money for them, I’m just glad we haven’t done anything silly like that, yet!!
comments ,3,5,6,,10, do you believe anything the express and star reports? . like idle fans the press just make up rumours to get people to buy papers, the signings will happen , because the 3ms know that’s the only way to stay in the premier, now to comment 9 villain, whats the matter?? your trophy cabinet looking a bit bare? the only way villa are gonna win anything anytime soon is to have a raffle ticket sale.

Manager Mick McCarthy is seeking competition for Jody Craddock – who is expected to sign a one-year deal to stay – Christophe Berra, Richard Stearman and Neill Collins.COMPETITION he should be looking to replace Craddock& Collins.Obviously we can only wait and see what MM has in mind, but the statement Both have a year left on their contracts and would be available at prices Wolves can afford.Does this mean Moxey has not learned from 2003 and again we do not intend to invest in a Premiership future.
Well lads two weeks until the trip down under, and so far we’ve signed a 37-year old goalie, and a Serbian player with a prison sentence hanging over his head.
We are linked with a dozen of players, most of the average at best, including Raul Talmudo who was a good player, but is now turning 32, and has lost his form and place in the Espanyol team.
Sorry if I am feeling slightly nervous, but to me, Moxey, Morgand and McCarthy doesnt look like they have things under control.
Don’t get too stressed yet lads. I know we need some good signings, but not much has happened in the transfer market yet. It is a question of when the right players become available, and then persuading them that Wolves are a worthwhile destination.
i agree with all of the above including the villa fan saying we are jokers, yet again wolves fans have been full of promiss! we are going to buy players with premier experience! thats what jez poxy said yes jes jez poxy! all we are linked with is players with relegated teams, we aint had one serious bid for any decent player yet, we should go for giggs and schols we have a good relationship with man u and every player we have had off them has done well here, and im very sure paying them big wages for one season would be a bigger pay off at the end of this season, cuz they will help keep us up easy, so it will be a no loss of money to us, get buyin boardroom!!!!!!!!!!

Richard Dunne is the reason Man City never made it to the UEFA Cup Final. Quite possibly the worst defender in the Prem. Matthew Bates would be a far better purchase pace, young and will only get better.

E&S might need to write stories, and no, we dont have to believe anything we read in the papers. I dont really care about rumours. What I do care about though are facts, and the facts are:
Two weeks until pre-season
Two (maybe only 1) signing so far
No sign of non-premiership players such as Collins, Stephen Ward, Clint Hill, and even Iwelumo (sorry, but he will be lost in the Premiership) leaving. George Friend even stated today that he looks forward to play at Tottenham….George Friend?? We will be slaughtered…
Ps: I like Friend, but he needs to be loaned out. So does Vokes and Ward.

wolves fans relax!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! players are stil like i said on holiday etc etc they only players that have really moved to clubs are the crap ones!!!!!!!!! jus chill out and then av ur moan in july if nothing has happened!!!!!!!!! villa fans what you on here for???? your best players leave for mid table sides hahahaha and young and agbonlahor will be next to go!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well im slightly dismayed by O’Neill on this one, sure we shouldn’t sell a centre half until a replacement for Laursen comes in but if you can’t back yourself to buy a better player than Knight in the summer transfer window then you may aswell forget about 6th place or above next year.
For Wolves fans who think Zat is poor, well he is, but he will dominate at the set-piece and if Wolves don’t do that next season they wont stay in the Premier League.

15. How dare you.
George Berry never scored own goals. He just made pass backs that the keeper failed to read.

I refuse to panic over new signings. They will come and Mick will go for players that he thinks will keep him in his job. After all, he wouldn’t be bothering with all this DIY at home if he was thinking a move was in the offing. However, whilst the players who got us up deserve their chance, surely some of them will inevitably become back-up players to those we need to sign in order to stay up. I think we know who they are, no disrespect to them. (I would “love it” if I were proved wrong.)

1 striker (doyle 6.5m ) wont spend that sort of money

I don’t think Milijas will get a work permit until he has seved his suspended sentence in May 2011 (I hope I’m wrong). Why didn’t Moxey do his momework on him first before getting our hopes up?
Please stop mucking around, spend some proper money and sign Huddlestone, Manciene and Bent for starters, otherise will be left high and dry like last time.

We HAVE stolen a march on the other clubs that are looking to bring in players.
We have most likely been talking to every possible player who could be available. What is happening now is that every one else is starting to talk to them too.
No player, in their right mind, will commit to next season until they have listened to all possible interested parties. Would you?
We were just the first to speak to (some) of them, that’s the only way we were going to ever steal a march.
BUT, I can’t bring myself to imagine for one minute that the 3 Ms would come out in the press and media and say we were going to spend and get players in if that was not their intention. They aint that daft. They would look like absolute idiots.
And the reason we are being linked with so many players is because Jez HAS LEARNED this keeps your true targets (and the agents thereof) on their toes as they think you will snap someone else up if they don’t hurry up with their decision. We are playing the transfer game this time round, which we failed to do last time we were promoted.
Tbh who would rather us win the championship and stay in that league and not go up. 27 games we won last year we’ll be lucky to do 10 next year
Report abuse
You Wolves fans make me laugh. Do you think you’re the only club being linked with dross? Look at Villa with this apprentice reporter Mcloughlin! So far, he has managed to link Villa with Jenas, Huddlestone, Zakora, Bale and Bentley (Half of Spurs reserve team); Tuncay, Wheater and Downing (So good, they were relegated); Lescott (Because he supported Villa as a boy); Sturridge, Richards, Onhoura and Johnson (Ditto Spurs), the list of rubbish goes on. A half decent reporter would link us with a few improbables like Van De Vart, Sneyder, Drenthe, Henry, Xavi, Iniesta, Casillas, Del Piero etc, etc. Just do what I do. Ignore the rubbish in the press and on the internet. Then, when you see Mick McCarthy standing over someone writing without a gun to his head, you will know who Wolves are signing. I trust the media about the same as Jez Moxey (And that ain’t very much)!
i cant believe the wolves havent even been linked with a half decent experianced player yet i honestly dont think we will get a work permit for miljas im 95% sure on that, im not saying that we should spend half our money on untried players like brum but i do think the board should show some ambition they owe it to the fans and if we dont buy any decent players i personally will want to know whats happening with the money that we got for winning the championship.

there really is no point in being worried just yet. it’s still early days, and there’s another 2 months yet to sign someone. no-one said this was going to be easy, but seriously, would you rather us do the same as birmingham and buy a £8-9m striker instead of buying carefully to strengthen up our team? i don’t think so. i think birmingham have made a very big mistake, they haven’t brought no premier league experience either, and burnley haven’t even been linked with a player! i believe that the 3 M’s will do the right thing towards the end and make some excellent signings to keep us up!

3. emmerson boyce (cb – wigan – £2.5m)
4. kevin doyle (str – reading – £6m)
5. steve sidwell (cm – aston villa – £5m)
so the line up would be:- hennessey; elokobi,
davenport, boyce, foley; c.edwards, milijas, sidwell, kightly; ebanks-blake, doyle; subs- hahnemann, berra, stearman, henry, jones,
jarvis, keogh. (unless we sign a striker and another cm on loan to put on the bench ;)).

Not sure about this one (Knight). Why not go after Dunne? He shows true leadership and is assured on the ball. It seems as though we cannot compete financially with perhaps 18 out of 20 teams in this league. I would certainly prefer Roger Johnson to Knight who I think has a far more promising career aheaed of him.

Season ticket prices set by Jez in the top 8 (more than Everton,Vile, Blouses, MAn City, Sunderland, Balckburn, Wigan, Bolton, Fulham, West Ham etc.), …. I hope we get the team to go with these!!! Spend the dosh Jez! Doyle + MAncienne would do! Get Gardener from the Vile not Knight.

To be honest I would rather we tried to sign someone like Kilgallon from Sheff Utd than get Knight or Johnson.
I understand that signing players is a complicated business but I would like to see a few signings of intent in the next week or so to reassure us all that we are not going to have a repeat of the farce that occured last time we were in the Premiership.Signings such as Raul Tamaudo,Jo, mancienne and Duff, who could still be a very effective player, would show we mean business next season and aren’t just here to make the numbers up. Don’t get me wrong signings take time but we need to see some real positive action soon as we need to get new players bedded in ASAP!

Maybe between your collective you may manage to write a cheque for £3m. Doubt it though ( unless it’s a bonus cheque for yourselves!!!!!

Linked with, targetted, in the hunt for, enquired about, all phrases to appease the frustrations of the fans. We failed to strengthen properly last time, the lateness of the play-off final was cited as a reason, automatic promotion seems to be a drawback now, reason being no-one at Molineux can believe it and are stunned to immobility.we had a spate of enquiring about players we knew in advance would not sign or we could not afford to pay just so it looks like some kind of effort is being made. Ten mill for Doyle and Hunt from Reading might just convince me they are serious. The drink driver from Serbia? bring him on he will blend in quite well (with the crowd not the team).

I see our juvenile friend (9, 46) in claret-and-blue can’t even spell Villain.
Nice to see another Villa fan (40) actually make some decent points – though I don’t have a problem trusting Jez, even if he does. Never trusted that Doug Ellis, mind. :-)
38 GB’s PY – spot on. Plus, no-one at Wolves is going to complain at being linked to players we don’t want, especially if it drives the price (and the wages) up for our competitors. After all, they’re trying to do it to us – for example, Villa’s supposed interest in Milijas…
I just don’t get the panic. We’ve recruited as many as Brum, two more than Burnley, and we haven’t lost any of our best players. Plenty of time to get what we need.
Panic buying will get us over-priced dross.
Where are the damn signings!! the proven premiership players, young and hungary players!!!
We’re doing what the baggies did!
After the comments the 3 M’s made at the end of season i expected wolves to spend 5-6 million on a player with at least 6 or 7 player coming in not 2.3 million on a player who might not even get a work permit! Blues are jumping ahead, and like Mowbry missed out on a striker at the end of the transfer window 4 the baggies – wolves will be watching their potential targets playing elsewhere if they dont act fast. Watch the panic buying towards the end – we’l end up with the kind of drab that got us relegated last time!!

Are Wolves deliberately trying to wind me up?
Given we had a head start on many of our rival clubs, because we knew we were promoted several weeks before the season ended, our actions so far in the transfer market have been more than dissapointing.
Let us compare to Birmingham, 6 million on a striker and then 4 million on a centre back, Wolves 2.6 million on a midfield player who may not be able to get a work permit.
So we have taken a goalkeeper on a free, we are supposed to have the best three young keepers around, why take on a 37 yr old? Does it suggest that Matt Murray’s career is over, or that we expect that come Jan when the rest of the prem have seen them at first hand then either Matt or Wayne will be sold?
As for the centre back situation, Hyypia would have been a good buy, but did not come, then it was Oguchi Onyewu, that fell through, then it was Scott Dann, an under 21 international, young and hungry, he went to Birmingham instead, and there can only be one reason, they are paying better wages, now it is Zat Knight, 28 not so young, and not actually played that often a total of 33 league games in the last three seasons, only 2 last season, so very much a Villa reserve and our 4th choice, even MM must be getting a little downhearted, you may not always be able to get your first choice players, but when it comes down to fourth and fifth choice, when it becomes a matter of not so much who do you want but who is cheap enough….. oh well better enjoy next season, it may be some time before we are in the Prem again.

Some of the posters on here are mentally weak. The first sign of anything going wrong and they panic just like they did in January. You wouldn’t believe how foolish you look.
Wolves will get plenty of quality in, but not until teams like Everton, Villa, Spurs and West Hams have signed their targets and we can pick up players from them that won’t get a game.
To the inevitable idiot who will say that’s a bad method…. remember we are not competing for a place in Europe…. we are aiming for 17th. We need players that will help us beat teams like Portsmouth, Hull, Stoke and Wigan; not Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea.

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly us ’supporters’ become so critical and negative when we are not doing what many of you think we should be doing. I really do believe that, whilst it is the norm that most fans can be short sighted and fickle at times, the majority of wolves fans on here genuinly haven’t got the faintest idea about the game.
Many of you would find a reason to knock the team, manager etc whatever we did.
We are becoming renowned across the country as negative whingers, and whilst we have had to endure years of under achievement and false promises – which hasn’t helped, many of you are.
I don’t think for one minute that my comments will influence any of you to think twice before being so quick to jump on the negative band wagon, but for christs sake – we are in the position we are currently in for a reason: we have just WON the championship with a team that has the kind of character and hunger most of us have known has been lacking for over 15 years, whilst generally also playing good attacking football.
I know its close season lads and we like to speculate and comment, but there really is little logic at times to much of what many of you come out with.
It really is like listening to the hilarity of Tony Butler when reading most of the stuff on here! Come on boys – rational and considered opinion really does go along way.
