Norwich no to Wolves defender
Wolves have been denied an early summer windfall after Norwich pulled out of a deal to re-sign £1million misfit Jason Shackell.
The Canaries’ budget has been cut following relegation from the Championship to League One and they can’t now afford to finance a deal to keep the central defender.
Shackell has been told he’s free to leave Molineux as Wolves prepare for Premier League football, with boss Mick McCarthy trying to sign at least one centre-half and long-serving Jody Craddock in talks to stay.
The 25-year-old has two years left on his Wolves contract but had hoped to remain at Carrow Road, where he finished the season on loan.
But boss Bryan Gunn can’t afford to keep Shackell or fellow loanee, Crystal Palace striker Alan Lee.
Gunn said: “Signing them both was my hope at the end of last season – had we stayed in the Championship.
“But we didn’t and it will be tougher for that reason. Financially we need to be realistic. These guys have contracts at a Premier League and a Championship club.
“They’re both under contract for the next two years. Being in League One is going to make it more difficult to attract them than it was before.”
Newcastle’s former England international Nicky Butt, 34, and Blackburn midfielder Aaron Mokoena are the latest players linked with Wolves.

I would pref’ Aaron Mokoena to Nicky Butt.
Butt has got the experince but have you seen him play …. slow and off the pace!!!

Shacks was immense for us when he returned, would happily take him back.
But the fee????
An original fee of £1m was agreed. MM then spoke to George Burley who said £1m was far too much for him.
The deal went through at £450k. Come on you journo’s! Get it right ;)

I have never seen Shackell play – is he really that bad? How can you go from being the Captain of Norwich in a mid table championship side (season before last) to being a complete failure at the Mol? Can anyone tell me why he is that bad?

I think Butt, would be a good 1 season signing, he has the experience to pass on and do a sort term job, which will allow younger less experienced players a chance to bed in.
Shakell – I guess sell, him but he does have premiership experience and if we have a couple of injuries, who do you prefer him or Collins !

7) – awful passing, indecisive and no composure on the ball.
He easily cost us a few goals when he returned to the side. Couldn’t ever find a Wolves man with a pass.
I don’t think he offered us anything at all. Perhaps his heading ability?
I actually prefer Collins to Shackell.

I noticed the other day on these post how Davenport was gettin’ alot of stick for his performance agaisnt pompey yet he put the cross in for there goal now I know this doesn’t mean much but he was gettin’ alot of stick yes he didn’t get a blokc in for the first pompey goal but you can’t expect an average prem defender to keep everything out. I still think he should be worth going for.
Yes he did have a big bost up with Zola but that was because he dropped him for a player who hadn’t been in the defensive picture for West Ham all season (James Collins) I think I’d be p**sed off if I were in Davenports position aswel tbh. cnsidering west ham wasn’t doing too bad at that stage of the season

Comment 9. Have you seen Nicky Butt play recently, he is shocking, slow, pedestrian his passing is so off the mark and he would a liability in out midfield. If it was nicky butt at man u then sure, but not now, he is useless, hence he was useless at blues!!

Sign Ledley up. Creative, scores goals, excellent vision and young. Basically, a quality player.
I think Nicky Butt is past his sell by date. We need people with experience up to the age of 31ish.
We definitely need a couple of good solid strikers and the same in defence. What will happened if Kites gets injured. What decent cover have we got? Same on both wings really. MM has a tough task ahead trying to persuade the right people to come to Wolves.
I hope he gets in some real quality. Its going to be the biggest challenge!

Thanks for the info David. If that’s the case we really need to off load him. Collins is definitely a tryer but I fear he does not have the pace for the Prem. We really need to get another solid center back. Mancienne would be great but not sure of our chances with getting him. I am sure MM and JM are on the case.

Nicky Butt was dire at Blues and they are signing up another Newcastle reject in Bowyer. So for all his experience a definite no.
We will have trouble getting rid of any of our transfer listed players due to the credit crunch. In all fairness, Shackell was meant to have a number of good games back at Norwich and is a far better reserve than Collins. Even so, signing an experienced centre half alongwith Mancienne would be ideal!

I would not be surprised if Joe Ledley was a Wolves player next month.

15 Ledley is imv far too expensive at £5m + I think that Halmosi from Hull cost Hull around £2m is a better choice – played in the Prem and is quality – yes he is 29 but we have plenty of young & hungry or maybe Croft from Naarwich – I think the Opta stats say that Croft has a very good passsing ratio – just a shame Naarwich didnt have the players to put em away – talking of which Shackell – did he really get a chance to settle in at Wolves and why do the E&S call him a “misfit”? It would be interesting to see why he was bought in the first place? Another knee jerk purchase like Freddie Eastwood?
IF we could do a player/s plus cash for Ledley maybe BUT at about £5m + no thanks – imv better off getting a proven goal scorer and/or focus on bringing in the 5/6 Prem proven Players NOT “project players”
Anyway Im sure there will be loads more “rumours” to come well before the start of pre season – I just hope our ACTIONS speak louder than words!

correct me if i’m wrong, but wolves and Cardiff agreed a fee for Ledley, but the player did’nt want to come here. Well thats his loss, but if he dos’nt want to come here good luck and good ridance l say. We only want players proud to pull on the shirt. Jus wish his name did’nt keep coming on these posts, its not going to happen, far too overpriced now anyway

Have looked at the comments – and whilst some are valid – Others are not. How can the Management Team try for Premership Players Until the League is Over. As for who will and who won’t well All of you please keep quiet until things happen. It’s silly to speculate until we have players signed- Next Season is going to be Massive – and let’s get behind the Team and Management NOW

Nicky Butt??? Slow,nasty,way past his sell-by date.We would be repeating previous mistakes in investing in players who can no longer perform at Premiership level. Besides which, not convinced Butt would in any way be as asset to team harmony off the pitch.

Not sure why Bob Wolf (see 11 above) had to have a swipe at Ward as being good for Div 1. Ward did a great job for us in the Championship this season. Given that we were Champions by 7 clear points and Ward played in almost every game after Elokobi’s injury,bar a few on the bench, he cannot have done too bad a job!!His attitude was the sort that was needed and his ability to link with Jarvis was an important asset for the team. The comment was rather uncharitable in the circumstances.

I havnt posted in a few weeks, and although we have being promoted it still seems that negativity reigns!…come on lets enjoy it,.. and realistically MM will sign a couple we dont agree with a couple we do and a couple of surprises but we are premier league so lets enjoy!!.
On the Shackell theme, he was poor in the few games he played, but I think it is more likely he fell out with MM the same as Eastwood!!

I do not think Shackwell had a fair chance but beleive he is not premiership material? Maybe another Championship team like West Brom might be interested?
Saying that why are we still paying Collins wages (and for the next 4 years) I would not put him on the bench for the reserves !

God, you lot frustrate me!!! We have just been promoted to the Premiership, as Champions, and you STILL whinge!!
MM, Jez Moxey & Steve Morgan WILL sign the players to keep us up; We WILL NOT repeat the mistakes the “boggies” made; We most definitely have the the best Management Team for the job – from the Chairman down.
So for now keep smiling and if you can’t, go on youtube and watch the videos of the Doncaster game – what a day!!
