Quashie: Wolves better than Blues

quashie7Loan man Nigel Quashie believes Wolves have “better players” than fellow promoted side Birmingham.

The experienced West Ham midfielder will be the subject of quiz questions in years to come, after helping both clubs win automatic promotion to the Premier League this season during loan spells.

He played 10 games for Blues and three for Wolves on loan from the Hammers.

But he believes his latest club – Wolves – have the better squad as they look towards the Premier League next season.

Quashie said: “I always said when I went to Birmingham that they were capable of gaining promotion. When I arrived at Wolves, I said they were capable of winning the league.

“Mick McCarthy told me I might not play as much as I wanted, but he wanted me to get amongst the younger lads and offer them encouragement. Hopefully that’s what I did.

“I’ve been first class with them and they’ve been first class in return. Even when things weren’t going well, I told them things would be alright because I was 100 per cent confident in them.

“We had a few meetings with the manager and I told the boys they were going to win the league because they had better players than Birmingham.”

As for the honour of helping both clubs win promotion, the 30-year-old is proud to have done his bit.

Quashie said: “I suppose I’ll be on ‘A Question of Sport’ in years to come.

“To have played with both promoted teams is great, but the main objective for me was to get myself fit and play games.

“To say I’ve done it with two sides that have gone up is very satisfying – it’s nice to come back knowing I’ve played for two clubs that have won promotion.”

The midfielder would love to stay in the region but with a year on his contract at Upton Park, the former Portsmouth captain is happy to sit tight for the time being.

He said: “It would be ideal to stay around the West Midlands because I’m settled here with my family, but we’ll have to see what happens.

“I’ve got a year on my contract at West Ham and there have been a couple of sniffs, but nothing concrete and I’m quite relaxed about it at the moment.”

Quashie has rejoined the Hammers with fellow Wolves loanee Kyel Reid, while the trio is completed by Marlon Harewood, who has gone back to Villa for their last three games.

He said: “I’ve spoken to the other two lads and we’ve gone back to our clubs. We’re waiting to see what happens because the Premier League season hasn’t finished yet.”
