Davenport back on Wolves’ radar

6280290West Ham defender Calum Davenport is back on Wolves’ radar as they consider a cut-price £1.5million approach in the hunt for Premier League recruits.

The 26-year-old is one of several Premier League names being considered by manager Mick McCarthy to bolster his defence.

McCarthy tried to sign the 6ft 4ins stopper in January, only for the move to fall through after the clubs failed to agree a loan fee.

But they are preparing to re-ignite their interest in a player who has a year left on his contract and is currently leading Sunderland’s relegation fight on loan from the Hammers.

Should Sunderland win their relegation battle, McCarthy is sure to come under pressure from the Black Cats for Davenport’s signature.

Former manager McCarthy retains contacts in and around the Stadium of Light and Davenport’s form will have been assessed.

No deals for Premier League targets will be done before the end of the top flight season but Wolves are putting plans in place to land their targets.

A move to Molineux would suit Davenport, whose wife is from the Midlands, while it’s nearer his Bedford roots.

Davenport initially struggled to get a game on Wearside, but has now played five games and done well.

He will no doubt have received glowing reports on the set-up at Wolves from Hammers team-mates Nigel Quashie and Kyel Reid, who  – along with Villa’s Marlon Harewood – have returned to their parent club following loan spells at Molineux.

Injuries have restricted Davenport to just 141 league games, but he has plenty of the top flight experience McCarthy is craving.

McCarthy wants Premier League experience and has already extended his search into Europe.

His desire for top flight experience almost certainly rules out a move for Liverpool’s untried winger Adam Hammill, who played against Wolves on loan at Barnsley.

But Cardiff midfielder Joe Ledley – who Wolves failed in a £2.5m bid for in January 2008 – could be available.

For that price, he would be a steal, but I am guessing if the Mackems do stay which they probably will, I reckon they will be in pole position for his signature rather than us.

Would be just the sort of player we need IF he can stay injury free.Fits the experience age bracket, and certainly at the right price.Long way to go until the start of the new Season but at least a step in the right direction.

We need a top keeper like Jaaskelainen co Hennessey just isn’t good enough and should be back up to Murray at best.
We also need a centre half, come in Mr Mancienne (at any price!) a complete midfield, suggest Phil Neville (Captain), Danny Murphy and Stephen Hunt, Benny MacArthy up front with SEB and we may stand a chance of survival who Knows?

This guy is just a fringe Premier player who has not established himself anywhere .I think he had a poor game against the Baggies the other week. What puts it in perspective are the comments made by people on this site that Morrison and Blunt would be good signings and we also are looking at Fortune who to be fair looked good to me on the box the other week. But if these playersa are all so good how come the Baggies are bottem of the league.Don’t forget the last time they played at the Molineux Greening ran the show.It is all very sobering on our own propects if we fail to buy some real quality with plenty of pace. Quality is far more important than numbers.

I think we have got to be reasonable about the type of players we go after and potentially sign.. Why would cannavaro come to us, he will have offers from major clubs aroung Europe, especially Italy, he wouldn’t come to the Premiership for a relegation battle!!! The type of players we will go after will be those who MM thinks will fight and scrap in every minute of every game… As for G. Neville, we would not be able to afford his wage demands… Players like Davis at Portsmouth are exactly what the doctor ordered, and dare I say it Mr Barton…

    What is everyone’s thoughts?

Famous last words but Mancienne was too short.
After a couple of games it seemed to me that teams had him worked out with the long ball.
QUality player, no doubt – not sure how he would get on vs Davies or Crouch.

I do think we need two centre halves, just not sure Mancienne is the answer at any price. Maybe at a reasonable price, but he is not world clss.

Thats how i see it. This is coming from someone who saw Teddy Sheringham at Forest and thought he was over-rated.

Mmm. not sure about Davenport, we should not necessarily sign a guy with Prem. experience just because he has been there. For goodness sake go after Ledley with a realistic offer NOW before our rivals move in, Cardiff and ourselves know our fates next season – use this fact to our advantage Mick, Jez.

We have got to get serious about they type of players Wolves will attract… Neville, Cannavaro etc won’t be coming for a relegation battle when they will/ could have offers from all over Europe!!!

The type of players we NEED are those who will be up for a scrap every week to pinch those valuble points to keep us in the Premier… Only after a couple of years in the Prem will we attract top quality players…

Players mentioned so far the likes of Davis at portsmouth, and the couple at Reading are ideal… Dare I say Mr Barton????

We have to accept next season is entirely about survival, this means we WILL lose more than we win. We need players who are hungry looking to prove something, not individuals trying to squeeze out another years prem wages.
Hypia, neville, butt good players but medal winners with nothing to prove. Lets maintain our current strategy and buy desire, lets raid the best of the championship LEDLEY, DOYLE, HUNT etc yes we would benifit from one or two well regarded pro’s but not seven has beens! Buy Barton and no doubt he and several of our young pro’s will spend new year on remand, just what we need!

I’ve just seen the below comment on a rumour board: someone PLEASE tell me it’s a wind up!
“Wolves will have much less money to spend than was initially thought because major work needs to be done on the Steve Bull stand, which is sinking. In light of attention being focused on the Hillsborough disaster, the Premier League won’t allow the stand to be used unless it is brought up to scratch, just in case something does happen. It’s unlikely, but they don’t want to take chances. McCarthy will have enough money for one big transfer, but the rest will have to be mostly frees and loan signings.” Also, the baggies have put in an audacious bid for Rooney but MGM have refused to sell their child star.

i think we do need another quality keeper as murray is to injury prone a left back 2 centre halves a certain steve hunt down the left ,joe ledley, joey barton ,and kightley across midfield as jarvis is still learning his trade and as regards to barton we havent had a hard tackling midfielder since the keith downing days yes he has baggage but just needs the right manager round him and up front kevin doyle hes about 27 previous experience of the premiership and also a good goal scorer even if we take barton on loan at first just to see if it works we wont loose anything then

19 Unless its officially announced believe nothing as a rumour is exactly that – even if its in the E&S or any other media (we wanna sell some papers etc)

We will be linked with most of the players that other similar clubs are linked with – no surprises there then

    I noted the E&S comment:
West Ham defender Calum Davenport is back on Wolves’ radar as they consider a cut-price £1.5million approach in the hunt for Premier League recruits.

Cut price – Why cut price? Is this suggesting that Wolves are cheap skates and are looking at signing players valued at around £1.5m? Or that we are looking at a “bargain” 6″ 4 defender and offering a fee that is less than average for a decent prem player??? By the sounds of it – we couldnt even agree a “loan fee” for him – if this is true of course ;-)

Davenport in no better than we have now in my opinion. Yes he has Prem experience but has never been 1st choice cb at any club he has been too. Some of you wolves fans must be giving some of the baggies fans a right laugh with talk of such high profile players coming to the wolves. We really need to be realistic!

Lovenkrands and shaun davis would deffinately be realistic and good targets altho I think alot of teams will be after there signatures. Frazier Campbell is another player we should enquire although again he will be a very sought after player.

We also have a fantastic dressing room where all the lads look like they get on really well and i think barton would ruin this. We would be mad to go after him!!

I think Sol Campbell would be realistic, he is coming to the end of his contract and won’t be able to demand the 50-60k he was on at his current age. A drop to 20-25k would be fair. Portsmouth are also in debt and are desperate to reduce their wage bill.

I want to see us try and grab 3-4 of the following: Campbell, Shorey, Mancienne, Huddlestone, Reo-Coker, Nolan, Hunt, Zigic, McCarthy.

its too early to say which players MM and the scouts are targeting, but “bargain” buys are only bargains if they can cut it in the prem week in and out. look at the baggies who signed so many cheap but underacheiving players.I hope we sign one or two experienced prem players 30plus possibly on a 1 yr contract, but we would have to pay good money to get them.

I know there is a website out there with out of contract players on it, listing danny murphy as one, but not only would he not be coming to the mol even if he was, if you take a look at the fulham website he is signed up until next summer

Wolves are a premeir side now so we need to think good premier players or amazing championship players. Sean davis would be god and also kevin nolan. Get those two and it really would be amazing. But maybe wolves should buy back mar davies. Biggest mistake wolves ever made. Striker wise matt derbyshire or maybe eidur gudjohnsen. Maybe go for carlos vela on loan or jay simpson. Defence we need to get rid of berra. Way too slow and collins as well as jody craddock. We need the likes of mancienne and maybe get in huddlestone. Hes a defensive mid so whats wrong with playing him in defence. Quality player as well. We need either joe ledley or stephen hunt.

30 You may have a point re: West Ham owners – Icelandic Bankers – No Pun intended ;-)

As for Moxey – I think that people dont give the scouting network that MM uses and Taff Evans enough credit for spotting the “bargains” Moxey acts more like an overpaid gopher imv – as he did for SJH and is now doing for SM

Personally after watching Moxeys actions when quizzed by Sky cameras regarding the Sounessgate “Did he or didnt he make an offer to buy the club” – using Chaucer to do alot of the clubs marketing as part of the “sponsor package” and various other gaffs – Imv Moxey isnt more “inspiration” more like “perspiration” – just an opinion ;-)

I know I’m going to get pro Moxey comments but c’est la vie or perhaps the E&S moderators wont even allow this comment BUT look at Moxeys manager appointment Failures Vs Success and the club sponsor deals – We win the “family club of the year” thing and then we get an online betting service deal??? Imv a major contradiction in “family values”
Ah yes but we will have comments re: “he’s done well in times of recession blah blah” Does anyone know if Moxey was the man behind that or the guy the club hired to do the commercial stuff – like find a new sponsor etc??? Or even Chaucer???

I said this before and have to agree with a recent remark made by a former Wolves player – “I think that Moxey will struggle to attract decent Prem Proven Players” Not Ronaldo or Drogba esq – just better than average Prem Proven Players – the jury’s still out BUT I hope Moxey proves me wrong – Now there’s a challenge for Mr Moxey – Go on – prove me wrong
Or do we look forward to more comments like “My mobile was red hot blah blah – BUT they chose Stoke Blues or someone else blah blah and the other one “We wont want to do a Leeds?” What does that mean – for goodness sake – one extreme to the other – Mr Moxey we expect some decent Prem Proven Players in the club BEFORE next Pre season starts – and one major amount of effort to achieve our goal of giving Wolves a fighting chance of survival – So go do it and beat off the likes of Blues Stoke etc for the Prem Proven Players we will badly need – When you’ve done that – take your holiday not like last time – having your mobile “switched on” – doesnt get you infront of the players and their agents! Rant Over!
