Monday 13th April 2009, 11:30AM BST.
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey has admitted the club didn’t spend enough the last time they were in the Premier League.
As Championship leaders, Wolves are hoping to clinch automatic promotion back to the top flight for the first time since their only campaign in the Premier League, 2003-04.
“I think if you look back to that year, we didn’t spend enough money,” said Moxey. “You can only work with the framework you’re given and it’s not my football club – I don’t have the money to own a football club.
“I’m the chief executive and I carry out the strategy and policies of the board.”
Wolves, then owned by Sir Jack Hayward before the takeover by current chairman Steve Morgan, spent around £7m on transfers in that ill-fated Premier League season, which ended in relegation.
Jody Craddock (£1.75m), Henri Camara (£1.7m), Silas (£1m), and free transfer captures Isaac Okoronkwo, Oleg Luzhny and Steffen Iversen arrived in the summer of 2003, before £2m Carl Cort and on-loan Joey Gudjonsson arrived in January, 2004.
But it was too little, too late as Wolves invested a similar amount to Sunderland under current Molineux boss Mick McCarthy, with an identical outcome. Should Wolves win promotion this time, the squad would appear to be in better health.
Over the last three years, McCarthy has assembled a group of players who mostly have youth on their side, with their value having grown significantly.
McCarthy has already spent more on January acquisition 24-year-old Christophe Berra – £2.3m – than Dave Jones spent on any player during the Premier League campaign to suggest Wolves are building for the future.
And, after guaranteeing a £30m investment in the club, Morgan is sure to be willing to gamble some of that fortune to see Wolves compete at the top level for the first time under his stewardship.

All sounds good, but that last line bugs me, “some of that £30 mil” if we went up, why not invest the lot and use the premiership money as fall back money (just incase we do an Albion).
We are then not using money we don’t have and are giving ourselves a real chance with like £25 – £30 mil to spend.

Lets just get there first. By the weekend things could be very different

Dave Jones would have kept us up, he got shafted for previous manager failings, Sir Jack did an awful lot for this club but he got disillusioned at the wrong time. People who slag Jez Moxey off haven’t got a clue, its a pity he wasn’t chief executive during the mid nineties when all that money was being wasted on ageing premiership players and average performers like Osborn and Corica. Time will tell but the club seem to be making the right noises.
sounds good but we aint in the premiership yet. this talk reminds me of when we blew it a few years back and the albion pipped us to 2nd place. can we just get there first!!!!

Moxey has constantly failed, except for 1 season when we got promotion and HE got a huge bonus, so why is he still in the job?
Would you ask someone with little or no football knowledge to run a football club?
Would you trust a person to make good football judgements like appointing managers or allocating funds?
His background is Hockey, he was brought up with hockey, not football and any knowledge he has gained has been at our expense.
Stoke City have gone one way since he left there and until he leaves Wolves we will not progress.
I suppose he is looking forward to yet another huge bonus this season as well whilst walking round the pitch with a big beaming smile which says ”look what I’ve done for you boys”.
we will need to spend a lot more than “some of the £30m”. IF we go up!
If we get promoted and we spend £25-30m we will be relagated a realistic amount would be £50m plus unless were aming for stopping up by the skin of your teeth and having spent lets say 25-30m it’s not guaranted.
5, you haven’t got a clue. The only thing hes done wrong i think is when he begged Twoddle to come back after he resigned. The club is in a good healthy position and much of that is down to Moxey. As for allocating funds, the owner determines how much is spent not the chief executive.
We’ve already spent some of that 30 million since Morgan took over. How else do you think we’ve been able to afford players such as Bera etc?
I doubt Mick will be given anywhere near 30 million if we do go up, which probably aint a bad thing. Although I think he’s done a great job, an excellent job in fact if we go up, many of his signings have been questionable to say the least.

if we go up that £30m isn’t just for transfers! if we’re gona stay there some players coming in are gona be on £30k per week if we’re gona compete so expect a few free transfers on 30ish year olds a couple of loans and £20-£25m spent on 4 or 5 quality 24-27 year olds. We’re gona need at least 7 players in as it’s an 18 man matchday squad in the prem now so will need at least a 25 man first team squad

There are 3 genuine PL players in the current Wolves team: Foley, Kightly and Ebanks-Blake. Berra might also step up in class, and Elokobi when fit has the potential along with Jarvis. The rest are clearly Championship players and will be out of their depth against even the more modest opposition in the Premier League. The problem is not transfer money but the commitment to the wages under contract. Just 5 players earning 50K per week (which would be reasonably established players in the PL) on minimum 2 year contracts would cost the club 25 Million. That’s before transfer fees. Basically it is going to be really difficult. What Wolves are trying to do is build several younger players up to that standard. I think we have several players on the way. I reckon 1 or 2 big signings, some more youngsters and 1 or 2 journeymen, A great team spirit and fantastic support and we might do a Stoke!

Don’t forget it’s not only the cash we have available it’s the sky money, that’s what mad most fans upset last time, yes we spent £7m on players & say another £3-4m on the wage increase but we got £22m that year from Sky, just for the one year not to mention the increased gate reciepts. IF we get up you have to give it a go, and more of a go than we did last time I think that’s the point here

SHOULD WE BE PROMOTED, AND I THINK IF WE WIN TODAY, ITS ALMOST ASSURED…WE MUST AIM FOR A MIDDLE OF THE DIVISION FINISH FOR NEXT SEASON.
TO ACHIEVE THIS WE NEED TO REPLACE AT LEAST 6 OF OUR FIRST TEAM, AND BUY EXPERIENCED PREMIERSHIP PLAYERS..WE OH SO NEED THAT.
THE STANDARD OF FOOTBALL IS SO DIFFERENT WE NEED ESTABLISHED PLAYERS TO GUIDE OUR YOUNG TEAM THROUGH.
AS A STARTING POINT I WOULD CONVINCE MR MORGAN THAT WE NEED 60 MILL IF WE ARE REALLY SERIOUS, AND I WOULD CONVINCE HIM TO RID HIMSELF OF OUR PRESENT MANAGER. HE MAY BE O.K IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP, BUT WE NEED AN EXPERIENCED MANAGER WITH PREMIERSHIP EXPERIENCE.
I WOULD ABANDON THE PLANNED TRIP TO AUSTRALIA-PRE SEASON…WHAT A JOKE , AND TAKE THE PLAYERS BACK TO SCOTLAND TO PREPAIR.
ANYTHING LESS THAN 60 MILL & A NEW MANAGER WE WILL BE SPENDING ALL OF ONE SEASON IN THE PREMIERSHIP.

Back in the Emerald Isle after a long weekend in Wolverhampton. Miserable rainy day here in Dublin, but lets hope Wolves brighten the day up for me.
Can’t believe 3 points today and we could “potentially” be up on Saturday, Come on you Wolves.
Just on 1 point a few people are saying, that is around the comments of how many premiership players we have. Ok lets look at Wigan, West Ham, even the likes of Bolton. Out of there 11 that started Saturday, how many of them ARE premiership quality??
Outside the top 7/8 most teams are made up of 5/6 good players, players who don’t shine in the prem or the championship, then they have those few players of genuine quality. I think we would just require a few “quality” signings to just stay up.
Lizbeth 20.
Its ok spending 60mil if we could attract 10-15mil quality type players, but we wont!
and as for sacking the manager just cause he had 1 bad season in the top flight with a different club a few years ago after he had got us promotion……well I think that just shows what a stupid posting it really is!
Number 20. Your comments are a joke, not the pre-season tour. As for the tour – Mr Morgan is intent on making the club an international brand. By touring Australia it will have massive media coverage and gain a lot of support. Expect the club to do the same next year only probably to the US. As for the manager statement – what a rediculous piece of nonsense. Premiership experience? Well our manager has premiership experience. He just didn’t have any money to spend last time. But he gave it a go. This last year alone we have spent around the same as what Sunderland had to spend a few season ago. You don’t cut off your head just when things are starting to look good. Mr Morgan knows that. Thank goodness you are not in charge number 20 or we would be back in Div two losing to chorley in the Cup again.

Im sick of Moxey being the scapegoat of this club, everytime something goes wrong it ‘get moxey out!’ time, but the club, in my opionion, is being run fantastically and in the correct way (unlike QPR for example).
Look at the likes of Hull and Stoke, in with a chance of staying up… and with a load of special players? heck no!
Players who perform at the championship level are underratted… look at Beattie, Cahill, Lescott, Jagielka, Sidwell, Ashley Young etc etc, all learned how to play in the Championship… not saying we’d stay up IF we get there, but saying because of the way the club’s run and the kind of signings we’d make (british players perhaps with prem experience) we stand a chance.

On investment required Nooooo I think if we put in about 1 Billion then we should be ok…..get a life and enjoy the moment we are top of the league we are top of the league and that is where we will finish. Good job all round as we have led this league start to finish. No small achievement

We would need to spend £15-20M wisely if we are to have any realistic chance of promotion.

We have a good young squad and with sensible additions including players we find in the lower leagues is the way forward. We dont want to spend on journeymen or foreign rubbish like in the past.
Lets give the players and club some slack. Roll on QPR.

A Chief Executive should shape strategy and influence the owner to make the right decisions, otherwise why are they paid so much. What I fear Moxey is really saying is don’t blame him if it goes wrong again. For a start he should cancel that stupid idea of playing preseason friendlies in Australia.

Spot on Neil, the key is to sign players with premiership experience. Thats where Sandwell Town went wrong signing unproven unknown foreigners. We need to copy Stoke in alot of ways, the spirit shown by their fans and players has given them a fighting chance. For me, our midfield is the weakest part of the team and Hennessey needs to improve very quickly. Its going to be a long hard slog with probably a few thrashings along the way.

i am a season ticket holder at wolves and was lucky enough to spend a day in the chairmans suite with steve morgan and jez.
Steve morgan assured me that if we gain promotion or not he is going to invest hugely in the summer as he doesn’t want to see wolves as a struggling premiership club but as a european place contender. Obviously this isnt going to happen overnight but to just stay there your talking alot of money. Promising times ahead i believe.
Again we need to get there first which should be our main focus

we do need to spend. The problem that many have ignored is the wage bill. New players will want premier league wages. This will cause problems if we go down.

Albion spent £20M and looks like they are going down, so we need to spend double that amount. At least Pie Man has admitted they did not spend enough, but it still staggers me that he swanned off on holiday for 3 weeks whilst at the time we did not have enough time to negiotate deals where really the deals should have been done then go on holiday. Anyway we are going over old ground. 1 MORE WIN AND WOLVES ARE BACK!

Remember in the last promotion season it wasn’t just the fact that we underspent – it was also the fact that Moxey (as well as the others) took a couple of weeks off after already being 2 weeks after Pompey (and Leicester I think) got promoted automatically. The board had prepared “targets” the previous season knowing that they had to be quick – and we blew the lead. The season we went up, they went to the other extreme. And this came after the fiasco of the ticket sales for the playoff final that he, as CEO, was accountable for. Iverssen on a free? We paid up his loyalty clause at Spurs for around £1.5m and put him on the highest wages ever seen at the Mol – panicky action by a panicked CEO.
Yes, the money spent wasn’t enough – but it wasn’t just because SJH failed to sanction it. After all, Pompey spent just £3.5m after promotion, although they had a number of frees (e.g. Sheringham) and loan players (Smertin).
Once again, this is Moxey trying to be teflon man. I really don’t see why he feels he needs to blame others all of the time and try and paint himself as flawless. I’m prepared to forgive and forget and hope the lessons have been learnt. I believe that they have – and I hope that time will prove me right. But I would just like the guy to show some humility and occasionally, just occasionally, tell it like it is.
And, for what it’s worth, I still think we should give MM a firm handshake, a severance cheque/bonus and our best wishes now it looks like we’re up.

38 Agreed
Wolves need to invest in Premiership proven players – who are not afraid to take on Premiership players (or at least a similar standard to the Premiership)
As Ron Atkinson said on WM on Saturday when he spoke about clubs who get promoted – Albion spent money on players who play in a lesser standard than the Premiership – and to stand any chance of staying up – Wolves will need to bring in players who dont freeze against other Premiership clubs or take far too long to get used to the pace/ tempo of it – Big Ron also said we will need around 6 or 7 players of this standard – when we are promoted
We will be battling against the likes of Fulham, Wigan, Blues (If promoted) etc etc – a mini league of around 8 to 10 teams and we need to be able to take points off these sides
The Big Boys in the top half of the league will be like mini cup finals – where passion pride and sure doggedness will be key to getting anything – remember when we took on Man U and beat them at the Mol and Man Citeh?
Spending Big Bucks doesnt guarantee success – better quality players, experience, leadership better tactics (nouse) and good leadership on and off the field will count
All of the above with the crop of youngsters we have should see us through to be able to more than compete with the teams that are in the bottom to mid table mini league of the Premiership greed league
I believe that we are all but promoted now and a big well done to all the lads, MM and the back room staff
If it hasnt already started; Morgan, Moxey and MM should now be putting the Premiership Blue print together – starting with a Premiership spine of the team – in the shape of Premiership capable players – Goalkeeper, Centre Half, Midfield General, Left wing/ Playmaker and Striker – ala Fuller or Beattie type with the addition of a couple of quality loanees from the Big Boys or abroad
Moxey said something about if were that easy just offering money it would be easy – but last time around we didnt even have a decent training facillity (which shows a serious lack of ambition) – Players like to see ambition and prospects and a competitive wage offer – as any other decent potential employee
We need to compete and have the same mentallity as the sides we will be battling against – No more excuses (Moxey’s famous last words about his mobile phone being red hot)
NB We all know what happend before – let’s put that where it belongs (in the past) and do it right this time!
UP THE WOLVES!!! & Lets enjoy the ride to the Premiership!!!

not one of you see whats been happening over the last few months do you??? not a single one of you! im not sure how many of you have seen the difference in play between the football six months ago and the football now ! MM went up with sunderland and got whooped he has learned from that and from what i see he is obviously spending time in training ensuring that does not happen with wolves! its not about buying in players willy nilly its about developing a squad who have a good understanding with each other and adding to it to develop more competition in more possitions when most of our squad was fit the players were hungry and playing there socks of to compete to keep there places e.g hennessy and ikeme just look at how they were performing but now hennesey has no real competition he is becoming complacent! the start of next season be it in the championship or the premiership id like to see say four additions to the squad to keep all the players on there toes im under no illusion that if we go up we will be in the top 12, its gonna be a hell of a fight to stay up there but the guys who run the club have got us there deserve a chance to keep us the, i just hope in january you arent calling for micks head because he has developed an awsome squad in the time hes been here, derby ran thereselves out of the game on monday but we were fit enough to bide our time and wait for that to happen i hope alot of you are eating humble pie this time next season if we get relegated oh well never mind its football it has its ups and downs! good luck for saturday boys.

41 Nice sentiments – yes these players are capable of taking points off most of the clubs in the Championship BUT dont get carried away on that promotion bubble!
The “feel good factor” is blinding alot of fans and its great to enjoy the moment and so we all should!
BUT people saying that Craddock should be offered a one year contract in the Prem and granting MM the freedom of the City for getting us promoted and the squad etc?
Get it into perspective pleease! MM had 3 years to get the squad assembled (with the help of his scouts/ back room staff) MM admitted that he had never seen Kites play until he arrived at the Mol
Craddock was brought in when we were promoted as the “best” of a Sunderland squad who were hammered most games in the Prem – and he struggled back then – no disrespect – just fact!
It feels great to be on the verge of promotion to the promise land and a Big Well Done to the players, MM, back room staff, tea lady and the fans – BUT when promoted the club will need a Premiership spine for the team NOT a wishfull thinking PS3 squad
Right now – hand on heart to even compete in the Premiership we only have about 6 players who could be considered for a place in the squad in the Prem
MM got whopped with Sunderland when he was promoted for 2 reasons – 1)The club didnt back him financially and 2) He made wholesale changes and brought in around 9 players who were not that much better than the one’s he had – (due to buying cheaply in bulk – sound familiar?)
Who knows what MM is going to do? I for one pray that he brings in up to 7 Premiership proven players – not journeymen, and not experimental wannebes – we already have our youngsters for that!
Going up in style – at the Golden Palace – Oh Yes! Cmon me babieeeeeeees!!!

42 – some decent points. We’ve got a squad of 30 at the moment, excluding our three loan players. We’d have to trim that a bit – in order to get the 7/8 players needed – but also have to weigh up the high probability that we’ll be back in the championship after just one season.
Which players would you look at getting shot of? For me, I would look at players not good enough for the prem, that we could do without in 2010/11. Jody falls into the category, much as I like him. Think S Ward and N Collins do as well – though I’m not sure that MM would discard them. Darren Ward and Jason Shackell should also be discarded, and I think that Matt Hill, George Friend and Daniel Jones will also be possible departures. Personally, I’d prefer to see Karl Henry go and give Daniel Jones a chance – but I can’t see MM getting shot of KH.
Anyway, that would free up the required numbers for 7/8 additions whilst keeping the squad around 30.

Rephrase that remark Jez to ’spent nowhere near enough’ the last time we were in the Prem. I am thinking is the investment going to be sustained? We certainly need : 1) An experienced international central defender. 2) A top class goalscorer. 3) Possibly two quality midfielders. These are the priorities; after this we should buy the best players we can afford regardless of position to build the squad to ensure survival.

We need :-
1 Centre Half,
Another right back incase foley gets injured.
2 Quality Midfielders who are proven premiership players as Henry, Jones & Edwards are squad players at best” Love us to have Giggs & Scholes but somehow I cant see it!
3 Another left back,
4 Another winger
5 Another striker possibly 2 as I dont think Big Chris will be fit enough for a whole season.
I would like Wolves to get rid of:-
Karl Henry “Personally he will be a squad player at best”
Stephen Ward “He will be out of his depth at premiership level”
Neil Collins “He is currently out of his depth at championship level”
Jody Craddock “Too slow the last time wolves were in the premiership”
Darren Ward “Cant get in the team at the mo”
Jason Shakell “Read Darren Ward comments”
Harewood, “No thanks”
Reid “Squad player at best”
Andy Keough, “Squad player at best”

Why does everyone say “You need to spend £xxx million to stay up…” Man City have blown £32m on one player – was he worth it? I’d sooner we continue our search for young players with motivation and desire than spend millions on one player with an inflated salary and ego to match. Let Mick continue to do what he’s shown he does well and not fall into the spend millions will guarantee success trap again – been there, done that, remember?

Chris R – I think the point is that we need a blend of players next season. In other words, we need to buy players that are better than the ones that we’ve got and who would be prepared to hang around in the event of relegation.
Highlighting the richest club in the world isn’t the greatest comparison – instead, looking at West Brom last year, how many players did they sign that fell into the “better than we already had” category? Not many.
Not all of the young players that have ‘made it’ in the Championship will make it in the Prem – we need to get the balance right between youth and experience. It’s just tough in this money day and age to get the likes of Ince/Irwin to help us.

How much money to spend ? is a very difficult decision. You will not be spending £30mill we spent more on players than Stoke and Hull ande did not survive, its all down to wages Beattie is on £30k per week that is probably double the top earner or Albion and Wolves. Was reading yesterday that you have a capped salary structure so it lokks like you will be looking to sign unknowns and hopefully they come off.Good luck to you, hope you make a better effort than we have.

52-micheal owen? and we are gona pay 100k a week for someone who wont play half the season? behave.
i think the wages will be our stumbling block next years as none of the current squad are on “huge”(i put it in brackets as it is still a lot of money to us) money, but compared to players we are going to get in, surely the current players deserve to be on the same wages as the new ones as they put in the graft playing week after week in the championship giving them the divining right to play top flight football?
I understand most of them are not good enough, but when we are on about harmony at the club and fighting for eachother, surely when a prem player breezes in, the lads all know his on 10-15k a week more than them. Its only human nature to be jealous, and i think the players such as SEB, kites, henno, jarvo, foley should be rewarded with new contracts.
