Mick McCarthy admits Wolves have “hit rock bottom” this season – but insists he will treat the run-in like a new 13-game season to get their promotion bid back on track.
The Wolves boss has spent the first half of the squad’s four-day break in Spain addressing the players’ mental approach to the final furlong of a promotion push that is rapidly losing momentum.
But, after some rest and relaxation, McCarthy is adamant his squad will return ready for a fresh assault on the Championship in the belief Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Burnley was their lowest point.
“I’ve said to some of the guys that has to be our rock bottom,” said McCarthy, speaking from La Manga.
“We can’t perform worse than that so, if we are starting afresh, it’s a good time to do it.
“Our form hasn’t been good, especially last Saturday. I’ve watched the game again and we were poor.”
McCarthy says Wolves are ready to treat the next 13 games as a new season – starting with Sunday’s visit of in-form Cardiff as they bid to rebuild their lead at the top of the table which now stands at three points.
“It’s almost as if we’re starting again,” said the boss. “That was an observation some of the guys made when we were talking in the gym on Monday.
“We’ve had a bad spell so we can have a fresh start on Sunday against one of the form teams in the league.
“We were just having a chat and seeing how they feel and they were at pains to point that out, which I thought was interesting.”
Wolves have had a relaxing couple of days so far but will be training more intensely before returning home tomorrow.
“We’ll have a bit of down-time but we’ll be training hard,” added the boss.
“It’s nice to get away and have some relaxation.
“It (the current form) is certainly not because they don’t work hard. They always put a shift in.”

PATHETIC MICK.
Even the Moulinex Mixers could beat the WOlves at the moment. The sooner we get Ince/Andrews back as Manager/Number 2 the better, and the club can start to realise its potential. Oh, and we should make a cheeky big to buy Seyi back from Stoke.

Is it a case of the blind leading the blind?
Does MM, the coaching staff and the squad really believe that the opposing teams care if they believe that they are “starting afresh”?
Carry on with the same old kick and chase relying on Kites and Jarvis to beat a wide midfield player and a full back for most of every game – and all we’re going to get is the same average to poor performances
MM – You can only fool people for some of the time – Wake up and open your eyes – Better organised tactics – study the oppositions strengths and weaknesses every game – better leadership on and off the field – work on the oppositions weaknesses every game
A genuine 4-4-2 works better than your current 4-2-4 – Stop looking for excuses – the sooner you realise that your current tactics dont work – the better – Sort it and do it now!!!

To coin Harry Enfield’s Scouse catchphrase ‘calm down, calm down’.
I’m not sure why people are having a pop at MM for his “starting afresh comments”? It seems pretty accurate.
We’ve hit a very worrying dip over the last six weeks/two months but this break might be what the players need.
I’m not the biggest fan of MM but the tension the fans generate has got to generate to the players. Some of the actions of supporters (booing, ironic cheers when Hennessey comes for a cross, etc…) are borderline pathetic and I honestly can’t see the sense in it all.
Can’t argue – not good enough for the last six weeks but the quality was there at the start of the season in abundance. The encouraging thing this season, compared to 2002, is that our slip has come with 13 games remaining. We’ve still got time to more than put things right.
Basically – Let’s get behind them and leave the negativity to if things go wrong at the final reckoning.
Love it. As ever the Wolves “Fans” show that they fully understand the concept of being a fan, and moan, knock, and dig at MM and the club. I am sure you would do this whoever is manager, wherever we are in the league and whatever our run has been like.
We’re still top. A shaky top, but we are top. We have some good players, and some struggling to make the grade. So just get behind the lads.
On Sunday Cardiff will come to Wolves with two aims – score a quick goal and turn the fans against the players and/or Mick; or stop the play long enough to turn the fans against the players and/or Mick. And as ever some of our fans will oblige.
Stop whinging, moaning and panicking and support the lads. This is still our best season since 1989!!!!
Good luck for the next 13 games. I and the real fans are right behind you and I hope we will have the end of season we are all craving for.
All those people who are not willing to get behind the team and moan on and on…….stay away over the next 13 games. I was at Burnley……….we played badly but I will support them till the end of the season then we can see where we are but negativity will for sure not help the good chance we still have. Some people on here don’t travel away from home, and some who moan don’t even go to the home games……………. Just do us a favour and stay away. And as for some of you muppets in the Jack Harris stand, do you really think cheering when Keogh gets subsituted actually helps??? Some of you deserve the disappointment of staying down cause even when we were top and on a good run you still moaned.
Support them or dont bother turning up.

Well, if that’s all that’s left in Mick’s armory, then we are done for!
Mick can inspire players, especially impressionable youngsters to play well. With a bit of luck that can last for a season. However, sooner or later the bubble bursts, but Mick will take his £1M a year salary as long as he can.
I have heard it said that Mick is a one season manager, and his history confirms that.
The only question is should he go now, and leave us a chance of promotion or do we wait until the end of the season and reconcile ourselves to another season in the Championship with a new manager?

“It (the current form) is certainly not because they don’t work hard. They always put a shift in.”

We have this squad now until the end of the season, barring any loan moves, so lets bloody well get behind them and the manager and stick together, otherwise it will implode. The time for moaning is over, positivity on the terraces breeds positivity on the pitch.

It’s unbelievable that some so-called Wolves fans, who are probably unemployed or in a really boring job (with plenty of time on their hands), can’t wait for the E&S to publish a story so they can have a pop at MM.
It’s amazing that we’ve been top of the league nearly all season, and quite a few of our players have been linked with Premiership clubs, but some uneducated Wolves fans still have a go at them and say they are not quality?!
It’s easy to support your team when they’re winning, the real fans are the ones who keep supporting them during the bad times as well!

If the players come back full charged, confident and raring to go i’m sure we will see the difference on sunday.

If people spent as much energy on making positive comments towards the team as they did negative ones to Mick, there might not be an air of ‘fickle attitude’ about the blogs. A difference in opinion is expected but these opinions are just that.. They won’t change a thing on the pitch. Mick is not going to be sacked anytime SOON, accept that and don’t waste time making idiotic comments for somebody to do so.
Instead of picking out certain players and attacking them pick out the team and manager as one whole, because they are all in the same boat and all in the same poor form.
Take each ‘match’ as it comes, when we were on a winning streak before last november the sun was shining out of MM’s backside, now we’ve hit a standstill and it’s ’sack mick’.. Sack Mick to have another manager that will take another 2/3 seasons to get us promoted.. Because that’s better isn’t it? Some people seem to think it’s 11 Mick Mccarthys on the pitch so he’s to blame for every single fault, nevermind the ELEVEN football players that are paid to play football, and are in poor form right now. We could all stand united with 100% support for manager and team,or we could all toss our tickets away and stop bothering.. it won’t change the vital fact that for us to be pulled out of this hole we’re rapidly digging, it is the team and MM that needs to pull theirselves together, as a whole, not as certain individuals. We have proved earlier on this season we CAN do it, we deserved to get the top spot, after the way we have played since November, we don’t deserve to still have that top position right now, but we do, and we’re very lucky, but judging by the fact that Reading/Blues haven’t overtaken us just yet.. That goes to show that at this point in the season it’s how football is, scrambling for points, dipping in form, for lots of teams, not just us.
The Reading that beat us earlier on in the season compared to the Reading that was wasting time to hold onto an own goal lead over us, were two very different teams. As were the Wolves that absolutely battered Preston, then got absolutely battered BY Preston.
We have the squad, we have the strength, and the spirit to get automatic promotion, we have proved this. A good start to getting that back is Sundays match, Cardiff are very much in form, and the result after 90 minutes could well be the positive, or negative difference, to the remaining 12 games. So we’ll see.

No 3. Why should Wolves make a cheeky bid to buy Seyi back. He wanted Premier League football and he is having it as a spectatur. And this in a Stoke side that showed from the beginning that it was going to struggle with the big boy.
Many here are demanding Wolves sack MM. When is this that a team on top of the league gets rid of the manager who was responsible to get the team there.
Don’t tell me Real Madrid did it with Capello. But Real’s no 1 priority is winning the Champions League not the Spanish Liga between four or five elite teams.
Now let’s move on to next Sunday against Cardiff who were beaten by Arsenal’s reserves in the FA Cup last Monday. So we know what their potential is and not by boosting that they are going to catch Wolves with their games in hand. We’ll see how many points they will be getting from them.
On Saturday Blues are away to Coventry and Reading at home to Bristol City. Is everybody sure they are going to win them?
So roll on Sunday and hopefully things will turn Wolves way after a dismal run.

I know games in hand dont guarentee the points, but we could now be 4th, Yes Cradiff can also overtake us. We have been in relegation form since December and have only now just awoken to the concept of having a plan ‘B’. We actually had one last year for many away games. Michael Grey, played wide but supported centre mid field and has experience.- where is he now !!!
We could have made some signings in January that could have helped us turn this around, with the exception of Berra that opportunity has been squandered.
I hope we go up, really do. MM is too stuborn and too one dimensionable. The only thing he seems to be is anachronistic ! Prove me wrong !

Whilst we are TOP of the league, with 13 games to go, i think we haven’t been playing well. And getting in the players heads that Cardiff is a fresh start is a damn good idea!!! With the pressure blatantly getting too much for our young lads… It’s obvious to me they are trying too hard. They want it as much as you, me, all of us.. And due to that want… They are trying too hard and screwing things up… I hope, no scarp that, i pray! they get their heads together, coz I BELIEVE we have the ability to get automatic promotion, the lads just need some self belief and to stop being scared off screwing it up because unless they break that mentality then that’s what they will do!

if only it was us fans that could make the difference between promotion and failure(maybe about 5%)unfortunately its not its 95% down to the players and manager and at this moment in time theyre failing miserably, conceding ridiculous goals after 5 minutes in most matches or within minutes of the restart, when we do score we then go on to gift the opposition goals within minutes, this is not the fault of the fans but just pure lack of concentration by the team and this needs to change from now if we’re gonna have any chance of automatic promotion.lets hope they do make a fresh start after their 4 day break, come back revitalised, also lets see some of our star players show for these last 13 games none of us like moaning we’re all wolves together and noone likes to see us lose so lets all get behind the team and the manager as we have to trust mm to select the right team now to get us enough wins for promotion,if not then we’ll see what happens at the end of the season as thats a decision for s.morgan and jez.(no sense in sacking the manager now when we’re top of the league we’re not r.madrid) BUT WE ARE THE MIGHTY WOLVES!NOW GIVE US SOMETHIN TO CHEER BY BEATIN THE TAFFS SUNDAY

76 Agreed – & as for “home advantage” Dont you MM apologists realise that regardless of wherever we are playing home or away – If we sit as far back as we do in most games and make Jarvis and Kites attack on either flank – faced by the oppositions wide midfield man and fullback (kick and rush) How many times are they going to get past BOTH players?
If we keep the ball and use our full backs and wide men to attack (not just hoof the ball up to them in hope) and we use our centre midfield and forwards as other options (if the wing play breaks down) we will stand a far better chance – But will it happen?
If a boxer fighys with his guard down regularly in every fight (home or away) What are the chances he will lose regularly?
Will any amount of shouting and cheering change that? Do you really believe the Rocky films are real?
We desperately NEED to have shots on goal and defend properly NOT sit back most games and wait to be hit regularly – better tactics, discipline and organisation is key! Better leadership would also be a massive help!

As others have said, we all need to pull together these last few games and give 100% backing to the boys. Let’s not give our opposition ANY extra helping hand during the game: save that for OUR CLUB.
Now I’ve said that, I’ll also add that everyone on here has a right to express themselves. If some of you lot don’t like some of the comments you read, then ignore them (it’s what I do and I disagree with much I read).
Anyway, as I said, let’s all do OUR PART to increase the chances of success. Meanwhile, Mick McCarthy can do HIS PART by applying some rational football management skills, for a change.
Cardiff, I feel, is MAKE OR BREAK TIME, so my message to Merlin and the team is:
It’s time to cut out the waffle about knowing what you’ve got to do. We’ve heard it for weeks. Instead go out there and actually DO IT.
The fans may be temperamental at times, but when our boys perform, nobody gets better backing. Remind them of that, Mick.
And yourself.

77 (Usual Suspects). Here’s an alternative diagnosis for you:
McCarthy basically started the season playing 4-2-4, with a couple of out-and-out wingers. We’d concede more often than not, but scored loads.
You say ‘if we sit back as far as we do’ – whereas actually McCarthy plays a high defensive line to avoid gaps in an under-populated central midfield. That worked fine, especially when we had Mancienne, who was lightning fast with great anticipation, but the opposition have worked out that a chip over the top exposes the likes of Collins, Shackell and even Stearman.
They’ve also worked out that we run out of ideas if they pack the defence and double-team our wingers.
So yes, we’ve been found out tactically, and McCarthy needs to find Plan B.
But here’s the problem. A pre-requisite for breaking down a massed defence – and grinding out the wins we need – is patience; whereas we have a young, impatient team and an anxious, impatient crowd. That’s the other thing the opposition have learnt. If they soak it up long enough, our crowd will might turn on our players and they’ll lose their composure.
McCarthy has to play his part – no doubt. But so do we. Patience, good humour and support.
Of course, if you’ve paid your money you have every right to abuse the players, the managers and the owner. But although calm, constructive criticism might help – if they listen – abuse will not. And they don’t deserve it either. Morgan & Moxey aren’t the Bhattis – and McCarthy has improved the team, whether you like him or not.

What makes me laugh is that you say you are the best fans in the country.
You are obviously deluded and fortunatly you will get exactly what you deserve.

Grey wolf, you are the ultimate happy clapping fool that settles for mediocrity and shifts the inadequacies of our team onto paying fans who get behind the team EVERY home game.If you think screaming and clapping like a drunken monkey everytime a player such as keogh holds the ball up with his talentless, skeletal frame or misses yet another chance is beneficial ..good luck to you …,you cant polish a turd …silly muppet.

85, just because we fans support the team (something that seems beyond your self) doesn’t make us muppets, it’s people like you that have held this club back for nie on 40 years? as for the Ince fans- well what a fantasic job he did at Blackburn, MM and his blind crew have taken us to the top of the league-when was the last time we were there.
As Swain’y said, if last summer someone would have said we would be top of the league and three points in front by the second week in Feb-you would have sent for the men in white jackets, support the lads, if it is beyond you-STAY AWAY. and before any one asks yes I am a season ticket holder (for the last 38 years)and those that know me- supported the lads for 56 of my nearly 60 years, but that doesn’t make me any better than anybody else- because All true Wolves fans are the best.

Keep playing the same old tune john wolf you fool.If you are happy to settle for mediocrity then let your carer take you to the game and clap your hands for you when we lose to the likes of Burnley.Did you go to turd moor?Of course you didnt so keep typing behind your pc and as for supporting the lads for 56 of your nearly 60 years…you were on the terraces at 3 were you giving us your informed wisdom? No player should be booed during the game but we have gone from favourites for the top 2 ,to also rans making the playoff lottery due to gutless ,pathetic diaplays like we witnessed at Burnley and other places. Most fans who know anything about football could see this coming as we have been scraping wins since november when we havent deserved them such as at doncaster etc but keep playing the we are top tunes johnny boy.We all know we wont be there much longer..
