Pain in Spain for pondering boss

Pain in Spain for pondering boss

BURNLEY V WOLVES 26 GD 14Wolves boss Mick McCarthy will spend the next four days in Spain pondering a change in tactics to save his side’s wobbling automatic promotion bid.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Burnley made it one win in nine games, during which Wolves have failed to keep a clean sheet and suffered three successive away-day reverses.

They are now only three points clear at the top of the Championship with 13 games to go. Their record of 43 goals against is the third highest outside the Championship’s bottom six.

McCarthy, who jetted out to La Manga yesterday for a warm weather training camp in a bid to revitalise his players, reckons it may be time to alter his policy of all-out attack to help repair confidence in his side.

He said: “It’s not my way to go more defensive and try to nick a point, but it might have to be the case. Perhaps I should take responsibility.

“In the last two away games I’ve set up as 4-4-2 with two wingers, wide open with the express intention of winning it, and maybe I have to look at those tactics.

“We’ve played like that all season and we were loved for it when we posted two seven-game winning runs and got to the top of the league. It was fantastic.

“Now we’re not being loved as much at the moment and it’s been difficult for us. Perhaps we’re having a tough time and I should have changed it, so I’ll take the rap for that.

“Away from home I believe we’ve got the players and ammunition to be able to play in the way we have, but we didn’t manage to score which doesn’t happen that often.

“Maybe it’s a case of team selection, tactics, personnel. I’m not sure about going 4-5-1, but I need to just look at the way we do it.”

Wolves are sweating on the fitness of Dave Jones.

McCarthy said: “He had a slight hamstring problem but he’s in my thoughts for the next games.”

If the Wolves boss opts for a more conservative approach on their travels, fans will be looking for the manager to keep on the offensive at Molineux, where they are for their next two games against in-form Cardiff on Sunday and fast-falling Plymouth six days later.

Been playing wide open that I agree with but with an attacking side?? Ermmm well bet teams are terrifed of our attacking midfield of quashie and henry!!!!! That’s been the problem if kites and mj don’t provide anything then the middle certainly won’t, so when we concede early like we have been of late then the middle ain’t setup to get us back into the game.
I don’t think Edwards is the solution jones is but if he IS injured then who else do we have?? I’d try kites in middle with henry or quashie then put Reid on left wing (remember him Mick?) and jarvis on right!!!!
Or you could try keogh in midfield because you have played him every where else

cmon Mick, try and steady the ship otherwise it will be playoff heart break again, Jones should be in the team if fit as he is the best passer of the ball we have and he gives us that extra edge in the midfield.

Dave Jones best be playing if he’s fit, the only game we won was with him and Karl, how it was at the start of the season. Quashie and Henry don’t work together, like the Gerrard and Lampard scenario for England, they’re just not compatible.

How can we be so poor compared to the start of the season!! I’m pulling my hair out here! We’ve got to give all the support we can and pray that we make it this year. Otherwise it’s hit the bottle time.

I hope this is’nt Da Ja Vu happening again after what happened at the back of 2001-2002 season when the players clearly did’nt want it and surrendered a 10 point lead over the Tesco’s.I feel the players have to take the blame just as much as Mccarthy in the resent run of results and show some more ambition and hunger in wanting to get to the promised land, rather than picking up there overpaided wages come the end of the week.
All we can do is get behind the team as we have done so far this season, but once they have crossed that white line the rest is up to them, but i think now it’s time for some change’s.

Hunger? The players need a sense of direction. leadership, tactics and guidance

Running around telling yourself that you are “hungry” is not going to benefit anyone – If you dont have a sense of purpose and direction

Everyone can see that the centre midfield is sat too far back (almost like having 4 centre half’s) – If we intend playing like that – we need the back four and two centre midfield players to keep possession and build via the full backs and wingers (slow build up to frustrate the opposition)

Currently we have our wingers being “doubled up” on by the opposition wide midfield and fullback – which snuffs out a potential build up to attack – maybe far too eager to attack and play our cards far too early

We are playing a so called 4-4-2 – but in reality its more like a 4-2-4 – If we retain possesion and “frustrate” the opposition – it means that timing is of the essesnce – Not just a “kick and rush” down the flank for most of the game – meaning that Kites and Jarvis are sprinting down either wing and the opposition knows that is about the only real tactic MM adopts

Has MM and Co got the abillity. tactics and nouse to do any other???

    We certainly hope so!!!

“perhaps i should take responsibility” There no perhaps about it, you must take responsibility, this is your side now, all these players are yours. You have decided to ignore the academy players and gone for your own. Tactics has been your biggest downfall in your managerial career. Its the way you are, you have no plan b, devoid of ideas. Look how swansea played on saturday, passing game, they looked superb. Wolves on the other hand is a big lump up to Big Chris or Vokes for the knock on’s how 1990’s is that. I love wingers but wingers with intelliegence, knowing when to tuck in and track back so you can let the full backs over lap. Midfield, Henry and Quasimodo go not go together, everyone knows that!!!

I have been watching Wayne of these last few weeks and I am not saying that he is entirely the problem because some blame has to go to our defence but from what I can see when Bobby Mimms was the goal keeping coach Wayne was awesome, but since this new guy has come in Wayne seems to have lost his confidence. I hope we can get back to winning ways I am sure we can and lets hope that Cardiff when they come on Saturday get the back bite, but I am going to grow my nails all this week so I have something to bite onto. We have got the top scorer in the league,he needs a reliable partner with pace and power. As I have said on here before I think something serious has happened to the balance of the £30m .Lost in Iceland or New York City I suspect. That is the only logical explanation to the lack of ambition in January’s transfer window.I don’t buy that Mick is happy with the squad.Managers given a chance will always look to strenghen.

As many others have said. Playing Quashie and Henry is simply a no no. The only people who appreciated the signing of Q said it would be good for Henry to have someone competing with him.

If the trip to Spain turns everything around then that’s great. Lets focus on Jarvo, Kights and Reid getting past the defender and getting the crosses *IN* for Vokes, Iwelumo and SEB to feed off.

    Dear Mick

    A few home truths:

1)You can’t blame injuries. For most of the season – Matt Murray apart – you have had a near full squad to pick from.

2)You wasted January. You told us not to panic because there was a whole month to strengthen the team and what did you do? You signed Kyel Reid…who can’t make the bench….Nigel Quashie…who a poor Birmingham side got rid of…and you paid £2.3m for a centre half recommended to you by Billy Macneill, one of the worst managers to grace English football. Oh I forgot, he’s a mate!

3)If you play 4-4-2, you have to have 2 strong and imposing central midfielders who will pick up the extra workload. Dave Jones is a great passer but patently can’t tackle and hasn’t the motor to get up and down the pitch for 90 minutes.

    4) Why can’t you still be hungry when clear at the top? Isn’t the Premiership the best motivation to keep working hard and to keep winning? We have to get knocked off the top so we can be hungry enough??

I always said that the true test of your management would be when things get more difficult and I sincerely hope your Spanish break provides the necessary inspiration cos I don’t believe you have what it takes!

    Yours Frustratedly

MM has now got to “step up to the plate” and work out how to beat the next team and then the team after that!

No room to hide No more excuses – Just study the opposition strengths and weaknesses and get an effective game plan together to beat them – Keep doing that till the end of the season and we should get there!

PS* MM most teams in the Championship know how to deal with our current “kick and rush” down the wings – TRY something different and “mix it up” – Move the centre midfield up and play a genuine 4-4-2 for a change!

all of of best players have signed new long term contracts keeping them there for 3-5 more years.this dip in form was the same some 6 years ago when we had a 12 points lead over sandwell town and they over took us.
these players of today have there contracts in the bag ,due to the form we were in up and until xmas.some of the players know if we get in the premiership they will be squad players rather than 1st team choices.as if we were in the premier wolves wood have to spend big time and not make the same mistake as last time.we all know this is the truth but are scared to admit it.players should be told you get us in the premier you get your 10,000 a week 4 year deal.!!!!

Now, when they’re going through a rough time, not through any lack of effort or commitment, people choose to knock them when they are down! We are called supporters, but I don’t see much supporting going on!

When your friends or family are going through a rough time, do you give them a slap and attack them? Or would it not be better to encourage and provide support? I lay the blame 100% at McCarthys door, not the players. He blindly plays Keogh who is no good, ditto ward, ditto collins ditto henry and now Quashie.

The confidence has been shattered by consistently bad tactics by the manager.

We were sussed out by Steve Coppell when we played Reading at home. He played 3 in midfield to outnumber our 2, isolated our wingers and attacked Ward at left back throughout the game. Nearly every team since then has adopted those tactics, which unbelievably MM has failed to adapt to.
We have no holding midfielder to protect the back four, in fact even Gerrard & Lampard playing as our 2 midfielders would struggle against 3 opposition players. We may not mean to but on the pitch our shape is 4-2-4 so its no wonder we let goals in, and get over run in midfield. There has to be a change of tactics, which include playing an orthodox left back, and more numbers in midfield. This means changes and not putting Collins or Ward on the bench.

While I couldn’t sleep last night – yes, I am that sad and feel that passionately about my club – I was trying to work out why we are so bad? to be honest, even when we were winning earleir in the season we weren’t playing well, we were just scoring goals against poor opposition, now the goals have stopped – quelle surprise – we are losing games.
Henessey – great shot stopper – but who is coaching him? he does not command his area OR dictate to or organise his defence.
    Ward – not a left back, pure and simple. poor positional sense but thats not his fault – he should never play that position! Is Hill really that bad that he cant get in the team? and if he is that bad, why did the scouting team and the manager agree to sign him?{read same for Darren Ward, Jason Shackell, George Friend – now we can start to question the managers buying decisions and the scouts who watch these players}
Stearman – still not sure about him, again you have to question the coaching, he gets turned far too often for me.
Berra – early days yet but previous experience of afore mentioned Ward, Shackell, Hill etc should we be concerned?
Midfield Mix – we can play as many wingers as you like but if they aren’t getting quality balls from the centre it aint gonna work. The distribution from midfield is too sideways in my opinion. Perhaps we need to tuck Kightly and Jarvis in and let them create their own opportunities to run at people?
Forwards – dont care who we play up there, same goes for the wingers, if you ain’t giving them the ball in the right areas or in the right way, the ain’t gonna score.

The reason the formation of 4 4 2 is not working now is because we have two defensive midfielders in the middle of the park! MM had the chance to get a a tough tackling midfielder in January to play alongside Jones but chose to get Quashie to go alongside the awful Henry! He chose to drop Big Chris because he hadn’t scored for 5 games – strikers go through barren runs but don’t change for change sake. Steve Coppell has not dropped Doyle 2 in 11! Sacking MM is the most ridiculous thing I heard. I ‘m not a big MM fan but he’s done fantastic so far.My main critisism of his teams is a lack of quality and creativity particularly in midfield and in a game against burnley where we were completely outplayed but only 1 nil down, one bit of skill or creative pass could of got us a draw and off the hook.

Yes we are having a bad time right now but most wolves fans are assuming the worst is going to happen. When will wolves fans realise the importance us fans have in how our teams results. We have a big part to play here to help the team out of it rather than push them deeper. Even if you want Mick out, it’s not going to happen this season. This shows no ambition and Keogh (amamngst others) should have been off loaded in January and improvements bought in in central midfield and striker. Keogh and cash for Fryatt would have been a start.

    45 – History Repeating itself.

I suppose Im what many of the anti MCarthy types would ignorantly call a Happy Clapper. Ive supported the manager the entire season, and think he’s done a fantastic job. Recent decisions have been somewhat suspect. I think until the turn of the Year, Stephen Ward had played fantastically. But he know needs a rest. I understood signing Quashie – If it was to provide competition for Henry – but playimng them together ?? No no no.

However – how you can compare McCarthy to Hoddle or McGhee I do not know. Both those managers took a club in a relatively strong positon and shook it until it crumbled beneath them with dreadful signings and horrific styles of play.

Sure McCarthy has signed one or two bad eggs, but he’s taken a club from 15 squad players and relegation candidates, to serious promotion challengers.

He was given three years, and that three years is up end of this season, so lets see what he’s made of.

We need to change the team majorly and I would look at 3-5-2 formation like this:-

Take a view and base every thing on him if Moxey will let you have the money, you gave us hope by bringing him to Wolves and now we expect nothing less, up the quality or consider changing Wolves into a social club. Handicappers never beat group one progeny at level weights.

Trouble is, such changes take time, and with MM only acknowledging that he needs to change this now, we ain’t got much time left!

I don’t know why MM is being knocked about the four day training camp in Spain. The players surely need a break from the dreary weather at the moment. There they can train properly – in the sun I hope so – relax and gel more together as a group.
If the weather in La Manga is as wonderful as it is today in Malta – not a cloud in the blue skies – then it would surely be well worth it.
Teams like Juventus and Milan have come to Malta by the turn of the year in recent times and they enjoyed working here without the interference of the bad weather.
So come on please let the boys recharge their batteries in Sunny Spain with my wishes and those of other Wolves supporters here in Malta would surely have been for them to come here. They would not be let down with the facilities I am sure.
Another thing going on in the last few days is that the teams behind Wolves have games in hand and they are going to catch or overtake them. But who is to say that they are going to win them all?
If Wolves beat Cardiff on Sunday it will surely be that the latter are out of the question. What the other teams are doing are mind games to try and put pressure on Wolves.
So come on let’s stay behind the boys for a final push to the Promised Land!

We should not get rid now we must see the season out but the fact we have been crying out for at least 1 quality central midfielder maybe 2 defies my logic. We have been playing long ball tactics into the channels and trying to build from there. Even Norwich showed us how to pass the ball and look at Swanseas performance the weekend Paul Walsh said on sky on Saturday we were 1 dimensional we have been all season. If you can’t keep the ball you put the defence under more pressure. I have seen most games this season and i think we’ve been sussed i also think Jarvis is lightweight which doesn’t help. The team is young because the club has been in decline since 1980. We have been a joke with joke supporters who squeal like schoolgirls when things go wrong. This manager is trying to grow talent that we couldn’t afford in its prime. Like any young side though its had a blip. Who was the manager that got them to the top of the division. So Mr McCarthy now feels he may need to take responsibility for recent results.
I suggest he is responsible for rewarding mediocrity by handing long term contracts to the likes of Ward, Keogh and Collins.
The departure of Mark Davies, the type of skilful player he despises, was also down to McCarthy. This decision will prove to the worst the club have made in many years.
He is further responsible for a lack of tactical awareness that will result in another wasted season.

I am absolutely gob smacked, attacking football!!!! Quashie and henry in midfield and he says that’s attacking football. Poor vokes finally gets his chance and thanks to our so called attacking football hardly gets one ball played through to him. I’m disgusted with the running of our beloved club at the moment. Morgan agrees to spend 30 million, so why the hell haven’t we taken the oppertunity in January to consolidate our position at the top of the league and build for a season in the promised land next year, just more bargain basement rubbish who will end up not playing then being loaned out as usual. There seems to be no desire to progress. Oh well championship again next year it is then. I hate to be negative but it’s near impossible to be anything else at the moment. SM – Ok mad mick, but i’ve just given you 2.3 million for Berra
MM – Ah yes but collins isn’t any good and we need cover
SM – But you have Stearman he cost nearly £1 million
MM – Yes Mr Morgan but he isn’t good enough
SM – Well what about Shackell
MM – But he has gone home to norwich, he missed Deliahs cooking
SM – But mad mick, you were a centre half surely you know a good centre half when you see one?
MM – No mr morgan, not really, I wasn’t a very good centre half!!

Hasnt he heard that alot of football clubs are reducing prices NOT putting them up? The stark reality is Does he really give a monkeys?

Finally – ALL this talk about “backing the team” blah blah – What difference is it going to make if the players are aimlessly running around like headless chickens?

The vast majority of Wolves fans at matches DO back the team – and it doesnt make ANY difference if the players have no decent tactics, leadership or cutting edge ON the field of play!

154 With regards to Old Big Head Cloughie – Agreed again – But our lot would be crying that its not fair blah blah & that they cant be treated like that!

We are lacking leadership, discipline and better tactics – too many mamby pambies in the squad being pampered by MM and crew

NB* What does Keogh and crew think about real men in the British forces do when live bullets are whizzing around their heads – they certainly dont go sulking to their commanding officer do they? Or for that matter get a freebie holiday!

    15. I couldn’t agree more.

We have been measured and found wanting, so far as tactics go. Other teams have done their homework on us and now play to snuff out the wide attack – 4-2-4 is a good way of putting it.

The slow build-up play is a great idea – get the opposition to commit players by trying to take the ball from us then we should be able to use the undoubted pace and skill we have in our wide players to explode from midfield.

We really need the type of player(s) in midfield that are capable and confident in their ability to hold the ball up and when called upon are able to distribute the ball accurately and with pace.

Maybe the centre forwards could drop back occasionally to midfield, flooding the area with players – problem is, this needs strikers with pace and guile and ours hve plenty of skill and guile but frequently not the pace.

Oh for a Ronaldo or a Giggs style player!

Enjoy the break guys, come back refreshed and let’s see if we can’t finish what we’ve started!

Why not try to address this is, that’s what happens in business, if teams don’t work management make efforts to resolve issues. Sometimes getting away from the day to day restraints helps people relax, communicate and work through issues they have. The way some people have described it here sounds like they’ll be running around the hotel in the middle of the night, off their faces, wielding fie extinguishers.

I was at Burnley on Saturday and I have to say that in all my 40+ years as a Wolves fan I’ve never felt so disgusted with some of our own fans.
To boo the players off at HALF TIME when you’re only 1-0 down is disgraceful and the people responsible should be ashamed of themselves.
We did play poorly and I agree with everybody that has said Quashie and Henry shouldn’t play together but booing doesn’t help anybody and it never will.
MM won’t drop Henry because he made him captain and that would mean admitting a mistake something that MM will never do.
I am as baffled by MM’s selections as the next man but the booing of players is NOT the answer it’s counter-productive and achieves nothing.
As others have said, too many people have got short memories and I for one don’t want to go back to the Lincoln’s of this world but let’s get a bit of perspective here.
Let’s cheer the lads on for the next 13 games and see where we end up, the club may well sack MM if we don’t go up but they certainly aren’t going to do it while we’re top of the league regardless of how badly we’re playing currently.

I was there! Getting soaked with all the other Wolves fans. 3 sides were covered…but not our side terrace. Well us and a couple of Lincoln fans that braved the monsoon so they could taunt the Wolves fans from their side of the fence.

Don’t remember much of the game but I do remember the funniest thing before the match. When the 3 of us got off the train, (only 3 because of 10 hours of train changes), a ‘mob’ of around 20 Lincoln fans were waiting outside the station. The police advised us to run at them. They then rattled off a shameful list of everyone they’d run away from, including a single Colchester fan.

Ah, those were the days. I proudly used to boo just as loudly then as I do now ;)

    Simon :)
