Forgotten midfielder Darren Potter could earn a shock recall to Wolves’ line-up on Saturday against Preston.
The continued absence of Dave Edwards, suspension of Dave Jones and lack of reinforcements has led to manager Mick McCarthy turning to a player he transfer-listed in May and hasn’t featured all season.
Former Liverpool reserve Potter is definitely in McCarthy’s plans, as the Molineux chief revealed the Republic of Ireland international was scheduled to play in Saturday’s postponed FA Cup third-round tie against Birmingham.
McCarthy said: “The team was Ikeme, Foley, Stearman, Collins, Hill, Jarvis, Henry, Potter, Ward, Vokes and Keogh.
“Michael Kightly had had a bit of a sniffle in the week, Dave Jones was poorly, Dave Edwards was injured , so ‘Potts’ was playing.
“Even if Dave Jones hadn’t been poorly, I was still tempted to give him a game because that might be the team that will play against Preston.”
Edwards is still suffering from the hamstring injury that forced him off against Blackpool nine days ago and is very doubtful.

im glad to see your concentrating on the league mick ,more important than the cup ,the cup is a bonus ,get hold of jj otoole in midfield
Report abuse
He is a good passer but is fairly weak on the ball.
Hopefully he’s toughened up if he does play.
I’m not going to moan though, Liverpool clearly saw something in him at one point.

This only highlights the importance of bringing in a central midfielder this January…………sorry Darren, it hasnt worked for you here and you are not good enough at this level.
Team: Hennessey, Ward, Stearman, Collins, Foley, Jarvis, Henry, ??? (wheres Mark Davies), Kightly, Blake, Iwelumo
Centre Midfield is the most important position…..we need cover in. Could have done with Davies back from Leicester for Saturday. What happens if Potter limps off?? Who else we got??

‘Harry’ Potter returns! Let the guy weave his magic.

Good luck to him. He deserves a crack at it, at least.

I hope MM is not serious when he says ‘That might be the team that plays against Preston’, we are only 7 points clear mick not 70!!!!!!!!!!!

leave Mark Davies where he is - finally getting some consistent first team football in a team who are doing well.
It will do him the world of good to be away for a while. When he returns he will be a much better player.

we play that team vs preston we must be bribing teams to lose

we seriously need a midfielder mick darren potter has had his chances he needs to go and what happens on saturday if he comes of injured what we going to do then buy a midfielder

I was under the impression Davies was back training with us while Mick decides if he will loan him to Leicester for longer. The lad has done really well there and they are very keen to keep him.
Why not give him a chance and keep Potter on the bench? After all, Mark has at least had some first team football over the last month or two.
Perhaps that’s why Mick has him back with us for training and hasn’t decided if he will stay on loan?
If Leicester’s website and press are to be believed, they appear very keen to have him on the pitch this weekend. I reckon Mick must be at least considering using him as a sub, otherwise why bring him back to train?
why not play Rosa?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Davies for me every time……love to get him back in the team before we see another talent unfulfilled. Anyone remember Ryan Green ? We should have managed him better - I hate to see these talents get away.
Mark Davies deserves a crack too. Potter has not done much wrong at Wolves and i’ve got nothing against the lad. If he gets the chance good luck to him. As No.2 said, Liverpool saw something in him so lets not slate him. The break from first team football might have give him the desire to find form.
mad mick admits we are seriously short of central midfielders but still leaves davies at leicester ok if he’s got something in mind for the transfer window but untill thats sorted get davies back for cover at least.

That was the team picked for the Cup game, not this weeks game.

Potter could be a great player if only he had that Jimmy Bullard-like desire. He lets his head drop far too easily. I’d like to see this as a fresh start for him.

Let MM do his job. He had been doing well so far.If there is a hiccup, so be it. We had to move on from there.
MM had to exercise all options available and know the strength in depth and to move Wolves to the next level.
Onwards the Wolves!!!

Please tell me this article is a joke - Potter is a pub team player that team for Saturday would struggle to beat a Blue Square prem side.
Am I the only one who is more than just a little concerned at the moment?
Potter has never been good enough. Davies is probably the best home-produced Premiership prospect we have.
Given that we are struggling in central midfield, I would bring him back from Leicester straight away and play him on a regular basis. He was only ever held back by his injuries and he must surely be back helping us…not Leicester…win promotion!
I’ve just read the original article on the Wolves official site… No mention of that being the side for this weekend, only for the cup match (which is fair enough).
Mick only points out that Potter is still with us, available and working hard. He suggested that he might have given him a start last weekend even if Edwards and Jones were both fit. The original article seems to suggest that the break has given all of our first choice players a rest and chance to recover for Saturday.
We might even see Gow on the bench. You never know!
I have read a report and Davies will be loaned out for another month and he may let him stay there until the end of the season. Leicester have not lost and I have heard via some of their fans that he is top drawer.
Potter is not a bad player but needs to get stuck in more. He is definitely one of our better passers. Give him a chance!
if potter is given another chance lets hope he grabs it with both hands and busts a gut for the team…he has not lived up to his potential and i feel he will be moved on when a half decent bid comes in for him….just an idea but a certain man utd footballer had a bump in his car on way to training today..if mr ronaldo has a bit of memory loss after it(not that i wish that on him)tell him he plays for wolves!!!!
you got to think more long term for davies. he needs games every week, stay to leicester this season and bring him back fully match fit.
why play stearman and collins ! are soo 1st choice centre half pairing ! why not given shackell and craddock a run out ! they have bein playin 2getha in the reserves !!
Why not play Kightly centre and put Jarvis on the right, Gow on the left?
I hope this is not correct. The central midfield is not good enough when everyone is fit so god help us if Potter plays,he just aint good enough.Have to say a little worried at the moment.Blues seem to be prepared to spend money on some quality players but I am not sure the club are prepared to go that one step further.MM says he is happy with Collins but if that was the case why did he get Mancienne on loan?We are in a position of strength and should be able to attract the type of players we need.Having watched us recently can we honestly say that apart from a couple could any of our players hack it in the premiership? I dont think so
Report abuse
Why when he finally wins back the support of the wolves fans that doubted his abilities as a manager last year… does he decide to say something like that !!!
”I was still tempted to give him a game because that might be the team that will play against Preston”
Play that team in the league.. against a good Preston side.. your asking for trouble.
And the Hypocrite talks about not getting complacent with a 7 point lead…
As well as this…Mark Davies should already be back with wolves if we have 2 central midfielders out injured/suspended… If not why not give Rosa a chance when hes more than proven his abilities in the reserves ? Or have we sold him now?
…And with Steve Morgan being revealed in the top 20 richest football owners in Britain… Why arnt we spending the money we have?
Why are small teams like Birmingham spending £3mil on players while were spending £250,000 on players.
Lets spend big and strengthen the spine of our team… Quality center back. Quality center midfield.
More than worth it if doing this will further our promotion push and in the end make it comfortable for us.
Agree with the comments to let Davies stay at Leicester. He needs games and when his confidence is found, MM should have no problems in putting him in the team. Potter will be ok, at least he has the ability to pass the ball to players who can do damage….Kites/Jarvis. We do need to strengthen though and quality at that. We go for Gow (although I rate him) but Blues go for Boyd. They are sending out a message of intent. Why don’t we go for players such as Etherington/Davenport who may take a punt on us due to our current position? May be higher wages but what we need to retain a position at the top.
15 I agree we need an attacking midfielder Rossa would be my option too. This is why i questioned the signing of Gow MM does not want to really play Harry and wont play Rosa for some unkmnown reason when he has a good record when performing for us when we were a much more average team. 5 strikers 3 central midfielders, quality in the midle will compliment and create more for the people up top.

Glad to see that all the so called and self appointed experts are returning to the board. Let Mick manage - he’s doing a pretty good job isn’t he?

ye you cvant play kightly in cm for so many reasons one of them being hesa right winger. and the other reason being he would leave henry on his own bkus he normaly plays there hole role from the right anyways . but i say leave davies for anouther couple month and then when the fatige of the team sets in bring him bk and it will b a firtness boost for the team. and why arent we makin an effort for berra 3m . fulham wanthim and fulham are a worse club than ours and have better cb as in better tha collins shackel or cradock. hes for sale now mic k so do me a favour bring in one of the best cb on sale for tht kinda price. anyways dont forget we normaly do our business hbehind closed doors so i can bet berra will be on the way in for 2.5 mil with 500 k addons . on jan 17.

Can’t believe people on here want Rosa in the team, he’s rubbish he’s been on the transfer list for over 2 yrs now & NO ONE has come in for him doesn’t that tell you anything.
Do agree about Davis though if we are light in midfield he should be here, good to see him playing regular football again, long may it continue hopefully ina gold shirt though.
Keep the faith

Potter plays well in CM. It is a shame he can only pass backwards or occassionaly sideways.
Centre of defence is the biggest worry now. Collins is still not up for the job.

He could play Foley in midfield, Steerman at Right back and Shackell and Collins in the middle.

We’ve got 4 players who just MIGHT hold their own in decent prem. sides. Two of them are goalkeepers and two are defenders. That’s it.

Funny how these message boards have been quiet all year and now all the moaners have returned. Get back to watching Coronation Street.

Why do people want us to spend big. A big price tag means nothing we should know that after the money we’ve wasted over the years. If brum get to the prem is 3.5 million boyd going to be a good premiership player? I dont think so. We’ve spent money wisely on some great bargains and some are premiership class. We’re not going to attract the players we’ll need to stay up at the moment. So I hope we continue to spend wisely this January. Adding to the team who are 7 point clear at the top for a good reason. If and when we go up then we can spend money getting the quality to keep us there. Relax, be patient, get behind the boys. In MM we trust.

when potte fist came here he had possibly the best football year of his life.
i thought to myself tht he is a great passer of the ball, he is stevie gs cousin so they ae pretty close so they must ahve taught each other something.
i would personaly lke to see tht team agaisnt preston, give some of our first team players a rest. i would love us to concentrte on the league but would lso love a win over brum in the cup on tuesday, tht would be a great edge over them, because there fans would think, omg we cant beat them at our place with the best performance of the season and we then lose to them in the cup. so i dont know if we put our best team out against brum and kill them, then ebanks and iwelumo could go on a scoring run.
so it marmite rli for mick you either do it or you dont.

i agree with 35 Timmiswolf we can all come on here saying play him or him but at the end of the day mm picks the team he thinks will win the game and upto now he hasnt done a bad job of it has he 7 points clear so come on get of his back and the players backs and get behind them whoever plays,WE ARE WOLVES
Report abuse
In reply to 44 I would like to relax but unfortunately I cant. You cant deny MM has done a good job so far but the way we have played the last couple of games gives me cause for concern .We were 2nd best against Sheff Utd and poor 1st half against Blackpool. Some of our players IMO are running out of steam and therefore we need to spend . we should be targeting players that not only are good enough to get in the team but also could be part of the squad if we were in the premiership.Whether we like it or not those sort of players will cost money.

I have always wanted davies, kightly, herny, jarvis to forge an outstanding midfield quartet.
Now he has games under his belt davies should be back home and he will have a spring in his step and will be buzzing at the prospect at being back with the boys and playing.
If potter is transfer listed leave him out he hasnt exactly sparkled in any reserve games EVEN WALSALL DONT WANT HIM ON LOAN.
WHY HASNT THE YOUTH WONDERKID BEEN GIVEN A GAME THAT 100MIL WORTH ONE REMEMBER.

when potter first came he passed the ball like a prem player, his passing was crisp and accurate he kept the ball moving all the time at pace but somehow he got dragged down to the level of the other players, sloppy passes which players had to reajust to recieve, whether that was complacency or bad coaching i dont know but if he can get his liverpool brain back he will do us no harm

Give the bloke a chance, he may impress us all but what if hes injured???? Really Mick should recall Mark Davies from Leicster but in Mick we Trust!!!

Mark davies is a better and more effective player than potter, even if we just recalled him for this game and then loaned him back out again! Personally i would keep him here and sign a top centre half. fair enough we were winning games before Mancienne but we had to score 3 goals to guarantee it, i cant fault collins for effort but if we want to move forward as a club he cant be part of it!

Mark Davies should be playing every week for us alsongside Henry (if he’s fit).

Here we go again! The great Mick playing with round pegs and square holes. Moreover, playing an extended version called ‘Out of sight, now suddenly in sight!’
Out of sight players are there for one good reason, they can’t be relied on!
I wish that Mick would stop trying to be a Football intellectual and just do what he is best at!
Just pick the best man for the spot and forget trying to play round pegs in square holes, and even worse stop playing rectangles that don’t do anything for anybody!

All fans have opinions and they’re entitled to them. Here’s mine: Potter’s not good enough, simple as. It’s nothing to do with bias, it’s to do with observation of when he’s worn the shirt previously.
Potter’s a powder-puff player who’s easily pushed off the ball, much like Keogh. We need a bit of strength and vision to go with ball skills. If Potter ‘deserves’ a chance then Mark Davies must be ahead of him in the queue by some margin.
Playing him against Preston only underlines the lack of strength in depth -though I’d wish him well, as I do all the lads.
As DingleShandee(32) said, Mick wins the doubters over then reverts to type just when you’re getting a bit of faith restored. Let’s hope Potts justifies the boss’s judgement…personally, I’m having kittens at the thought.
