Albion are one of four clubs chasing Villa misfit Marlon Harewood with Martin O’Neill ready to cut his losses and accept £2million for the striker.
The Baggies, who face Villa in Saturday’s lunchtime derby, made a loan approach for Harewood but were told he is only available for permanent transfer.
The Baggies duly turned their attention to Arsenal youngster Jay Simpson, who has since signed on a temporary deal.
But with overnight reports suggesting Blackburn and Newcastle are prepared to make cash offers to Benfica for Baggies loan target Ariza Makukula, he could be forced to switch his attention back to Harewood.
Boss Tony Mowbray still hopes to bolster his attack as Albion bid to pull off a second ‘Great Escape’ and Villa are yet to receive any permanent offers for the out-of-favour Harewood.
The forward has made just one Premier League start since joining from West Ham in summer 2007, but Middlesbrough have also been in contact over a loan deal, while Stoke and Bolton are monitoring events.
The former Nottingham Forest man has become an increasingly peripheral figure at Villa Park this season despite the recent absence of John Carew, falling down the pecking order behind 17-year-old Nathan Delfouneso, who was given the nod to replace Gabby Agbonlahor against Gillingham on Sunday.
O’Neill is desperate to land at least one striker during the transfer window and should he succeed Harewood will become surplus to requirements.
Emile Heskey tops his list and would be available for £3/4million, although the Wigan striker could land a more lucrative deal by waiting for his contract at the JJB Stadium to expire in the summer.
Jermain Defoe is expected to sign for Tottenham which could make Darren Bent available, but his wages could be a problem.
Portsmouth’s Peter Crouch and Blackburn’s Roque Santa Cruz are also on O’Neill’s radar, but Pompey boss Tony Adams is unlikely to want to part with another of his forwards and Santa Cruz still looks odds on for Manchester City.

I’ve read it seems pretty certain he’ll be going to Stoke by the end of the week, so no need to worry my fellow Baggies!!

About time!
We’re finally being linked with a striker that has and can score goals in this league! We dont want any of these fancy players from other leagues, we need someone with prem experience, i.e. Harewood, Nugent, maybe even Fuller (but preferably not) Finally i think this could be a good move!

This rumour fills me with complete and utter dread. Marlon Harewood is NOT a footballer. He is ideally suited to the loathsome Potters.
Please, Tony…DO NOT GO AFTER THIS WASTE OF A SHIRT!!!!

he aint that bad, we need someone who can hold up the ball up front so we can get young luke to blast em in

Kez
Nugent has no prem experience save a few appearences as sub, personally i think Nugent would be another Ellington/Earnshaw.

James Beattie?
You summed up my thoughts wonderfully Kez.If he cant impress enough to start for Villa, what does that say about our ambition, as a veritable premier league outfit…
Lets face it, we have never put hands into deep pockets, when we have reached the desired land.

1; Should fit in well then.

TM’s former club Hibs had a top goalscorer when he was there a Chris killen sold to Celtic now surplus to requirements there, wonder if he knows he is available. don’t think he will bring Harewood to the ALBION.

Over all the names touted I’d go for James Beattie, it just ain’t gonna happen though, wages to high and would demand a transfer fee, remember JP is tight and over 4 Premiership campaigns has never really gone for it.
Although I could be wrong it may just be our 3 managers at Premiership level have not been good enough ???
I’d don’t agree with my 2nd statement so that only leaves 1 answer. JP is not a premiership chairman, somebody else left these stats i have copied and pasted them.
Jeremy Peace’s Premiership Record
Added to this seasons results it gives Peace a Premiership record of -
Played 134
Won 24
Drawn 36
Lost 74
Scored 112
Conceded 219
Not good enough !!
If he was a manager how many times would he have been sacked by now ?

get kev philips back, big, big, big mistake letting him go, harewood is a moaning donkey and would not get a game with tividale let alone the baggies.

seriously what is with this boo boy attitude.
why knock JP when he has been the best chairman in the clubs history and has also brought in the best manager in the past 10 odd years.
lets look at his real record.
CHAIRMAN FOR THE GREAT ESCAPE
CHAIRMAN FOR OUR NEAR DOUBLE CUP WINNING SEASON (CCC AND NEARLY FA CUP)
CHAIRMAN WHEN WE BROKE HOW MANY TRANSFER FEE SIGNINGS IN THE PAST FEW YEARS
CHAIRMAN WHEN WE CONCEDED FEWEST GOALS IN CCC
CHAIRMAN WHEN WE SCORED THE MOST GOALS IN CCC
CHAIRMAN WHEN WE HAVE BEEN TO WEMBLEY HOW MANY TIMES UNDERNEATH HIM.
JP/TM I really hope your not reading this drivel, for a team that is 7 points away from 10th place and trying to do something about it, I’m not complaining!

13. Mossa, give it a rest mate, even Birmingham have said only a few days ago that Phillips must remain a ‘bit player’ as he no longer has the stamina for a full match. He’s in a division where he can give value for money and The Prem isn’t that division. I would also tend to be wary of M.o’N.’s cast offs. If he doesn’t rate them then they usually aren’t up to it. With all the teams available for relegation, (and that’s a lot of them), do you not think James Beattie would be on all their radar? If not, why not? They can’t all be bad judges of a striker. Maybe they don’t see what they’re looking for at Prem level. Leave it to TM, he knows what he’s doing and can survive.

Bednar is a better striker thna Harewood and is better at holding the ball up….we dont need this vile faceache
Report abuse
I like the look of Sturridge from Man City, but maybe we need more experience.
Harewood has pace and strength which is more than any of our current (Fit) strikers have. Worth a punt if the price is right. I agree with the points made about both Phillips (no longer prem quality) and James Beattie (Only premiership quality he has is pie eating). What are we doing about getting someone in who can actually tackle (Now that would be a novelty)
12 - Give it a rest, he’s done loads for the Albion and anyone who can see past the end of their noses can see it. There have been cases where I’m sure we’ve all felt he can do more, but any football fan at any club, has probably felt that about their chairman at some stage.
19 - I’ve read that we asked about Sturridge, but Man City aren’t looking to do anything, apart from give him a new contract, until they’ve tied up signing Santa Cruz, Bellamy et al.
Why haven’t we gone in for Lita? If the worst comes to the worst and we’re relegated we’d have another proven goalscorer to fire the goals to get us back up again.
For an holding Midfielder that we are in desparate need of, what about Dietmar Hamann? We could get him him cheap from Man City. He can tackle, pass, and is great from set peices. Would be a good addition until end of the season.
22 - He’s been mentioned on here a few times by us fans. I think the general feelings were that we’d like to see him at the Shrine.
He’d fit the bill of a player with Premier League experience and a wise head that TM mentioned before Christmas too.
Would he ask for a fortune in wages though?

23: Nedball (Not sure whether you the regular Nedball, but if you are i don’t normally post negative posts you should know that)
Obviously I have an opinion as you do, I agree with you that Peace has done a good job for West Bromwich Albion over the years, but surely with this now being our 4th attempt at the Premiership we should be doing something different and I don’t mean going bankrupt, but with all the windfalls that have been brought in over the years i’m sure the money is there, it was obvious at the start of the season none of the strikers were upto the job in the Premier (inc Phillips) also most fans were calling for a midfield general, if us fans see that then why does the club not?
All i posted above was stats that were given to me, it’s all true, now would you employ a manager with a record like that, IMO a manager would not still have his job with a record like that.
I know the Premiership is not an easy league to get established in and given the 2 wins over the Xmas period we are in a better state than we was pre the Man C game and I’m still fully hopefull we will stay up, but I think Peace has took us as far as he can, he has pretty much said that himself by offering the club up for sale, but in my guess the asking price is too high.
Apparently we have no funds to spend so where has the £4m from the Thompson bid gone?? Why did we try to haggle for an extra few quid for a sponsor when apparently we need the money??
Questions have to be asked.
And once again these are my opinion’s you are more than welcome to yours to which I would never tell you to give it a rest, these type boards are for opinion and debate so i’m just sharing mine.

14 BoingBoing666…. well said mate.
Too many people posting on here who only seem to know us a team that goes to wembley every year and usually plays in the prem.
When you have watched a succession of managers and chairman conspire to play crap football with no money for so many years then these are heady days indeed !!!
Regards the snotter that everyone says we need - I suggested Joey Barton a few weeks ago - I still think he is the type of player we could do with - but again I ask - would you want him in the stripes ???
Hello lads!
I wouldn’t waste my time on Harewood, he’s no the type of player we need. I wouldn’t mind Mowbs bringing in Welbeck from united on loan - but would experience be a problem?
I’m sure we’ll bring someone in who fits the bill but please don’t let it be Harewood…
Report abuse
Dietmar Hamann ?? Did you see his throw on Sunday. I know that he is not usually this bad but he is a player whose day has been and gone and his ‘experience’ is not helping Man City at the moment.
Harewood - total waste of time and money. Right idea to identify players out of favour but we need to look further afield than Villa Park - after all O’Neil only lets a player go if they’re no good for him and I’d trust his judgement on that. Marlon is not rated at all by my villa mates.

I have nothing against Albion as a club. I do think that relegation will happen for them because of the same lack of ambition that saw Wolves relegated a few years ago. Lack of ambition not by the fans, not by the manager but by the board and owner. My biggest hope is for Wolves to go up obviously but also would love to see you guys stay there for derbies next year. Harewood may be a squad player but not one to rack up the goals needed. Cant really suggest what to do about it though or who to sign……

i dont think harewood is the way forward, and i dont think he is a real albion target jus rumours, but i do think leroy lita has goals in him at prem level and ppl can say maybe not but surly he deserves a shot if moore gets one, cuz noone can seriously say he is gd enough, i hope he proves me wrong but he has only scored 1 goal for us, fair enough his not had many starts but im sure if u added up his minutes his ratio is still very poor, i dont kno hu we shud get in but we deffo need sumone

14.
Great to see ur appreciation of the might JP, he is the best chairman 4 a long time.
31.
Didi Hammann is a quality player and can put a tackle in, just what we need in the heart of midfield.
As for Harewood, he wouldnt get picked for the waggon and horses team, moans 2 much and is useless, just like miller then , so we’ll probly sign him
Report abuse
Harewood would never go to the Albion and I’m glad as he’s useless. Mowbray should have been pushing signings for a striker through in the summer. Forget the KP debate he wouldn’t have cut it anyway. Should have gone for Kevin Doyle.
Bring back Kanu, hes better than all names mentioned here.
Yes we do need a tackling midfielder, not bloody greening, I like him but he dicks around too much and has lost possesion more times than I can remember, at the end of the day we can all sit here and suggest players, but its the managers job, not ours, get over it and calm down ladies.
I agree with14 but also ecco that he is not the player we want. Kazim Richards is he still a player that wants to come back to the UK if so we should look at getting a loan deal for him.

27 - Tony.
Sorry mate, but I think that he gets a bad wrap from the Albion fans despite doing as good a job as he has done.
There have been times when I think he should have gambled more, but that’s my heart ruling my head, whereas he doesn’t do that does he.
I appreciate your opinion Tony, and can see what you’re saying…..I just don’t want another anti JP bandwaggon starting up.

Kazim Richards was an average championship player. The fact that a Turkish club gave him a chance hasn’t turned him into a world beater just means he’d expect inflated wages.

14 - Agree with your sentiments totally mate, but hate to be pedantic, JP wasn’t the chairman when we conceded the least goals in the CCC, that was Paul Thompson back then, the struggle for the top job came after.
29 - Happy Baggie - there is no way on Gods good earth, I would want Joey Barton in the Albion shirt, the guy is a disgrace and should have been sacked from Newcastle, he’s a thug, if he was a fan he’d be banned from the ground.
BTW - Please no to Harewood, can’t see any plus points at all in that deal for us.
Why do people keep going on about Nugent?? Rednapp saw what he was after he bought him, that’s why within a week he was effectively up for sale, he is slow and no better than what we have.
Bednar has to have a long run in the team, he scores when he plays regularly, anyway, come on you baggies on Saturday, we are definitely due a win against these lot.

Harewood is a good player - he needs a Chance
a have a go - He has all the presence of a Good Centre Forward - Physical and Determined. Don’t keep falling back on the Phillips Syndrome - he would not have done any different than anyone this season. So give Harewood a Chance “He will not break the Bank” like some of the comments the fan’s propose
