Parking in Sandwell has become more expensive as new pay and display charges come into force.
The fees have come into effect at the car parks in Low Town and Albert Street in Oldbury, Park Street and Short Street in Blackheath, and Adkins Lane in Bearwood.
More charges could to be introduced at 24 car parks across Wednesbury, Cradley Heath, Old Hill, Great Bridge and Smethwick in April, subject to approval.
But councillors say people will still be facing some of the lowest charges in the region, at just £1 a day.
The controversial fees, which were announced in October, have outraged traders and residents, who say it could affect business.
More than 6,000 people in Blackheath and Oldbury have signed petitions objecting to the charges, but their pleas were over-ruled.
Signs advertising the rates have already been erected in the car parks and today the meters will take their first coins. Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and housing Councillor Mahboob Hussain, said: “This is not just a cash exercise. Originally a number of people put a petition and we have listened to what they say. We originally wanted to charge 40 pence an hour and we reduced that by 50 per cent.
“There was also an issue with parents at nearby Christ Church School who had nowhere to park. They can get a free pass from the school to park for half an hour, free of charge, in the morning and afternoon.”
The scheme will cost £145,000 to set up and the council estimates in its first year of operation it will generate only enough money to cover their expenses.
The new charges are 20p per hour, up to a maximum of £1 for all day stay, with the exception of Adkins Lane, Bearwood. Motorists can also buy a one month season ticket will cost £15 with annual passes at £125.
