Ikeme agrees new Wolves deal

ikeme.jpeg Carl Ikeme has been rewarded with his impressive performances for Wolves with a contract extension to the summer of 2012.

The highly-rated 22-year-old, one of three excellent homegrown keepers with Wayne Hennessey and Matt Murray, has agreed a two-year increase on his current deal, which was due to expire in 2010.

Ikeme dislodged first-choice Hennessey, initially when the Welsh international was suspended for the Bristol City game and kept a clean sheet on his Wolves League debut as the team won 2-0.

He then kept his place for the following 10 games, conceding 15 goals before getting injured in the 3-1 win at Sheffield United.

Manager Mick McCarthy is delighted to have secured the future of the Birmingham-born shotstopper, who had been watched by Premier League clubs.

McCarthy said: “We’ve agreed a deal with Carl and everything’s fine – it should be signed this week. He’s done really well so I’m thrilled that he’s agreed his contract.

“He’s given Wayne Hennessey a lot to think about. He’s certainly brought competition – he didn’t just come in on a whim, he stayed in on his ability and only lost his place because he was injured.

“He’s one of our bright, young players and he’s a very good goalkeeper.”

Chief executive Jez Moxey believes Ikeme’s form leaves Wolves excellently served in the goalkeeping department.

He said: “We’re delighted Carl has committed his future to the club. He’s another of the large group who have come through our Academy and gone on to make an excellent impact.

“With Wayne and Carl, and Matt when he returns, we feel we have three top quality goalkeepers who will keep us very well served in that department.”

Another Wolves Academy graduate’s luck again took a cruel turn, after Lewis Gobern left yesterday’s 2-1 defeat against Sunderland with a groin injury.

McCarthy said: “He limped off so we’ve got to find out how serious it is. The last time Lewis kicked a ball in the first team was two years and three days ago.”

Good news about Carl Sad news about Lewis!!

this fresh blow to him really highlights the need for another out & out winger for cover for Jarvo & Kites!!

Ward & Gray can do a good job for the odd game or to but think neither have the same impact on a match as the first choice two have!! Gobern on the other hand has the same type of pace & skill to plug the gap if either is out for long periods!!

Shame for him but we can’t wait forever so if its true we’re after Sinclar form chealse then i hope we get him!!!!

    Up The Wolves!!!!!

Given injuries to Matt Murray and some other players, it is timely that the players future is secured thru’ extended contract, which is certainly give them a boost in confidence and security. A sense of belonging is every player’s wish and their effort towards greater achievement will greatly enchanced and deep rooted.

Just rewards must be seen to be given and having the loyalty of the players will be sustained not just monetary. The certainty of their contribution to the team progress will be geninue towards a collective effort by all team players.

    Up the Wolves.

Great news! Another good young player tied to the club. Unfortunately I don’t think we’ll get to see Gobern this season, So adding cover for both wings must be a priority come January. Scott Sinclair … maybe!

Very good news. I think that he is currently our best goalkeeper. Wayne has looked unconvincing since he has come back. Our best shotstopper but a flapper in the air!

Great we have 2 quality keepers on long deals, I still cant believe we are talking about when Murray returns though as in my opinion he will never recover for any long period of time. We did the same with Daley. This is worse than Daley!!

My point being that some players you just know will never be fit. Who here can see Michael Owen going the rest of this season without picking up an injury and missing half of it??

I feel for Goburn and reckon he could offer Wolves something if he could only get fit. I do think its wise to go out and sign 2 or 3 players in January to bolster out cover in the wing positions as a couple of injuries could see us in real trouble. Should we sign a striker in case Chris gets injured or suspended?? I know we had a brief spell but injuries and suspensions havnt hit us this season (bar Jarvis and that 3 or 4 game period) so we need to prepare for just in case scenarios which MM has already hinted at.

Another 3-4 years of commitment, and possibly Premiership blooding next season.

This is a bigger signing for Wolves than many supporters realise. This is our long-term first choice goalkeeper.

He has the potential to be as good the immortal Bert Williams. His command of the box gets better every game.
