Swain: Wolves have rivals rattled

For a team which has registered the best start by any Championship club since Kevin Keegan’s Fulham waltzed away with it eight years ago, Wolves find themselves being damned with faint praise at the moment, writes Martin Swain.

Birmingham striker Cameron Jerome, in supporting his theory that Alex McLeish’s team were the division’s top dogs, gave a particularly lop-sided view of Saturday’s derby.
“Wolves have been flying but we played them off their own park,” said Jerome. “They will reflect on the game and be happy with the point.”

This merely continued a theme set by Matt Kilgallon up at Sheffield United where they are still bleating about Wolves’ 3-1 victory.

“If they are top of the league and 10 points in front, then we’ve nothing to fear,” said the Blades defender. “We just had no luck whenever the ball went into the box.”

A little harsh? I think so. Jerome appears to have erased from his recall what happened after an impressive Blues had taken the lead while Kilgallon conveniently fails to add that Wolves beat his team because they didn’t require luck when they got the ball into the dangerous areas.

But never mind. The sound of envy and churlish nit-picking should be music to the ears of Mick McCarthy and his players, confirmation that the leaders’ low-key approach on top of their swashbuckling form is paying dividends.

I think they’ve got ‘em rattled.

* Tony Mowbray maybe needs to be a little more careful with his comments after games during Albion’s current struggle.

One point and just four goals from the last eight games and an encouraging performance and winning position thrown away at Wigan is sure to flush out more critics of Mowbray’s bold vision for Albion’s long-term advancement.

I think it is a vision worth supporting and one which can pay dividends in the long term. In the meantime, the Baggies gaffer perhaps needs to be a little more careful with his post-match commentaries.

A little chip at Stoke’s style the previous week gave his old Celtic boss Lou Macari the invitation to aim a few barbs at his former central defender’s team, accusing Albion of deluding themselves into believing they are good enough to pass their way to safety.

After the crazy collapse to an outplayed Wigan, Mowbray lamented so many opportunities slipping his team’s grasp and admitted: “The best bet is to bring in two or three strikers and hope one of them falls good.”

That’s another half volley outside the off-stump for his critics, who will feel a little bit more than guesswork is required for Albion to start taking advantage of their fine football.

The facts are that all we need to do from now is win 1 in 2 and we are up! We will be better armed when we play Blues or Sheff Utd as we will have Jarvis back.

Right Midfielder Larsson unavailable on the morning of the match; Right Back Nicky Hunt injured during the first half to be replaced with a natural left sided midfielder(now which side did the Wolves goal come from?); Kevin Phillips suffering with nausea from the opportunities missed and having to be substituted at half time….

Yep! You’re right! Jerome does seem to have erased from his recall what happened….
And Wolves tactically took advantage of the Blues misfortune….

With Nicky Hunt and Larsson on the pitch, switching Keightley to the left side wouldn’t have been an option because it wouldn’t have made any difference - you still wouldn’t have got into those errrrm “Dangerous Areas”….

I think most Wolves fans were happy with a point; on the back of a hard fought victory at Sheff Utd, which left us struggling with various injuries and other fitness issues, we had a poor first half. But, Jerome and misguided bluenoses aside, I’m sure most observers would agree that we got into our stride following their goal, and the last 20 minutes was nothing short of an onslaught on their goal, and a winning goal would surely have followed had we been blessed with another few minutes play.

Interesting to see that Cameron Jerome says that Blues are the team to beat and that they are the big scalp that ever other team seeks . This is the Mr Jerome that cannot get in a team that has 7 players aged 30 and over , a team that has averaged only 18,500 supporters at home this season , a team that has won absolutely nothing of any worth in its whole history . Yes Blues played well in the first half on saturday and they have a team who , by its very age , has a lot of premiership experience which our lads have not . However , they were the team hanging on by the skin of its teeth towards the end of the match and I know which team I would prefer to be supporting if at the end of the season both teams , as I hope , get promoted . Wolves had 11 players on saturday who were under 26 and an average age of less than 23 .We have 3 current England under 23 internationals , plus Michael Mancienne on loan , 3 full welsh internationals , 2 ROI full inernationals and 1 full scottish internationl . We have an average home gate of 23,500 and we have beaten both Blackpool and Coventry at home this season. Perhaps Mr Jerome should think before he speaks .

Again a case of not beating the Wolves at Bramall Lane and failing to recognise that they just did not put the ball in the net, hence the loss. Kilgannon and Jerome clearly share the same brain cell. Just an obsevation, but if the Blues are the team to beat, how come your own so called fans can’t even be bothered to turn out and watch you? Is it because they expect you to get beat? No doubt you’ll turn out when a real big team comes to play at the Toilet that is St. Andrews?

    Birmingham City:-
This year a team largely staffed by journeyman players in the (vain) hope of grinding out a return to the top flight. I thing by the end of the season enough of your first team will have succumbed to old age to leave you floundering in the wake of the top six!

    Wolves:-
A young team growing together the reserve strength in depth. Skills a-plenty and a common desire to win each and every game played. Success breeds success.
Do not suppose that this team will roll over in the cup match. Having seen you play last sat I feel a trouncing comming your way.

And, yes Bluebird, I realise that I’ve put the apostrophies in the wrong place.. That must make all Blues fans smarter than us Wolves fans and therefor Blues a much better team than us (!).

    Keep squawking Bluenoses.

Your a joke, hence the reason you’ve let all your season ticket holders in for free.

Well that’s a nice gesture i suppose - At least 12 people will be getting in at no cost.

    Total jealousy…

To be honest I’d be more worried about Reading taking your 2nd spot than trying to catch us up. From what I’ve seen of your shower on tv this season there is really nothing to be proud of. You’re very average at best and over the season you’ll struggle.
Your football isn’t cohesive, you often look out of sorts and frankly, your goal tally is pants.

WTID, your comment does not stand up to intelligent scrutiny as only one of those teams are in the top two!. It is clearly therefore quality that counts and not quantity. Birmingham are doing it the Chelsea way. Iwelumo may be the top scorer, but when he came up against a quality defence for the first time on Sunday, he was so ineffective that McCarthy took him off to save him further embaraasment!. KRO.

Personally, I’d like to thank Messrs Jerome and Kilgallon for their ungracious comments. If Mick hasn’t already done so, I suggest he pins the article on the dressing room wall. In fact, I’d welcome even more sour grapes, preferably from the whole spectrum of Championship clubs…Mick can post them on the walls, too. If ever the opposition were playing into Wolves’ hands, it’s with this kind of churlish behaviour. Swainy’s right: it IS playing into our hands. I can’t think of a better incentive for our beloved club to continue doing what they’re doing than to see Blues, Sheff Utd -and the rest- seccumbing to PRESSURE and ENVY.

Lads, you’re obviously doing something right or you wouldn’t be sitting pretty at the top of the table having scored goals galore. It’s not just the work ethic; it’s not just the stylish manner of football you’re playing; it’s not just the confidence you’re displaying….it’s the LEVEL HEAD you’re keeping.

Don’t change a thing, me Golden Babbies…you’ve got the oppo very worried and they KNOW IT.

The fact is that Blues don’t score enough goals and that’s why aren’t top. If Kevin Phillips was three years younger they would be flying but he’s reduced to a impact sub these days. He could not last 45 minutes last week.

For me, Reading are the more baffling team. They out played us at Molineaux and gave us a hiding and yet they have dropped points left right and centre. It’s astonishing that we have such a lead over them.

If we have ten million quid spare I would put in a cheeky bid for Doyle.
