Relieved Wolves defender Richard Stearman has labelled Jason Euell’s sending-off tackle ‘late and dangerous’ but has been able to report for England under-21 duty.
Southampton midfielder Euell earned an instant red card, following the 43rd minute 50-50 challenge between the pair in Saturday’s 2-1 win for Wolves.
Stearman bears no malice towards Euell, but reckons he was fortunate to avoid serious injury.
The defender said: “Because I got there just before him, it was a late challenge as well as being a dangerous one.
“It looks bad on him and I’d need to see it again to see whether it was a sending off, but I was lucky not to be badly injured from it. He caught me just below my knee and you always feel when you have a bad tackle on you, that it’s serious.
“But thankfully, (head of medical department) Steve Kemp came on, did a few checks and I managed to run it off a few minutes before half-time and then it was assessed in the dressing room.
“Thankfully it was nothing too serious and I’m fit for international duty. If he’d smashed me from behind or I’d been badly injured, I’d have something to say, but it’s a man’s game, it was a 50-50 challenge. I’m not going to hold anything against him.”
“It’s part and parcel of the game. I like to go in hard myself, but I’m not going to berate the lad for it.”
Stearman also claimed he got a touch on the ball when Saints claimed a penalty, for his challenge on David McGoldrick.
The Wolves man said: “I actually got the ball. It may not have looked that evident from behind, but I managed to get a slight touch on it and he (McGoldrick) missed it.
“So I was just grateful that the ref saw the little touch, because their fans were getting on his back a bit for the sending off.”

Stearman isn’t fuming at all…. a bit of a misleading headline.

But Stearman isn’t fuming!!!!!! Stirring it up again???

He has been another excellent signing for us. Fans have to remember that he was mostly playing full back for Leicester, so he had to take a bit of time to adapt. Him and Mancienne are quick.
Can we also put the goalkeeper question to bed. A brilliant save by Ikeme kept it 1-0. He deserves to be in!

it makes a change to have a ref on our side for once!!

Disgraceful tackle, they were flying in at us all match something had to happen.

Good Attitude from Stearman, that’s how football should be.

What a ridiculous sensationalist headline – E and S, get a grip! I expected to see Stearman having a real go but all he said was that Euell was a fraction late, hardly ‘fuming’! Anyway, it wasn’t a particularly bad challenge and if Henry had done it we’d be saying it was never a sending off. Non story.

I bet if it was the other way round, you’d all be moaning.

i thought we were very lucky on saturday . we barely deserved a point let aloan three. it has however been a lesson to all of us lately that in the past our lack of goals has halted our promotion drive .. this latest “sign mancienne” debate has absolutely underlined just how important that center half position is and as good as we are at the moment, its that position that is key to that premiership door .

Having watched the match. I have to say we were CRAP! We didn’t turn up, never got out of 1st gear and were very very lucky not to lose. Too many of our players gave them far too much space, never closed them down quickly enough. A better team would have scored more than one goal. Their goal was a very good bullet header from outside the box and by an unmarked man again.
We will have to play a lot better than this to stay where we are tha’s for sure. Seb, Carlos and Chris had an ok game. The rest of the team were on holiday.
They must get in the oppositions faces and clase them down quickly if we are to stay at the top.
WE HAVE TO IMPROVE VASTLY ON THIS PERFORMANCE!!
COME ON THE WOLVES!

13.. I absolutely agree with you. We were very very lucky to come away with a win. You would have thought we had 10 on the pitch not them.. God help us if we play like that on Saturday..

I was at the match, i thought we were excellent until we went 2-0 up. then foot of the pedal, we can’t afford to do that. kightly was awful, playing for fouls, seb had a complete off day, but was impressed by carlos, mancienne pure class and maybe henry. the rest just went to sleep after the 2nd goal. can’t afford to do that against the better teams

Stearman hit the nail on the head. Both flew in feet first, studs up for a 50-50 ball.
He got lucky he got there a fraction first. The other way round he would have got the red and Euell would have been the one whinging.
Still, all credit to him for at least having pop at winning the ball. Pity no one else in the side appeared to be too bothered.
