Super Wolves made it five wins in a row as they saw off Southampton to end their long St. Mary’s hoodoo.
Goals from Chris Iwelumo in the eighth minute and Dave Jones (18) effectively sealed Wolves’ first win in Southampton since 1980 and their first ever goals at St. Mary’s on their sixth attempt.
Mick McCarthy’s free scoring Championship table-toppers have now scored two or more goals in their last seven games to add to their billing as the country’s top scorers.
Defender Alex Pearce reduced the arrears on 21 but Saints’ fate was made all the more difficult by the sending off of midfielder Jason Euell two minutes before the break, for a studs-up sliding tackle on Richard Stearman.
The sending off on first impressions looked debatable as Stearman went in similarly hard in the side-on collision, which sparked the full fury of the Southampton crowd.
But on a day where Wolves rode their luck for much of the second half, they had top draw performances from their two loan players – in particular Carlos Edwards.
The Sunderland winger superbly crafted both goals with left wing crosses.
Similarly, Michael Mancienne again looked effortlessly classy amid the muck and nettles of the Championship.

its so good when you can get wins without playing to your maximum. we all want to see pretty football by wolves , but it is better to see your side grinding out results. up the wolves

Great result but I think we were lucky they found a way through our defence a few times in the second half,we were fortunate they couldn’t finish no doubt IF they had scored we would have come back with a reply,I thought we were in for double figures in the first 20 mins.GOOD WIN C’MON YOU WOLVES…

Get in there!!! No need for Collins then…

shame about manciane getting a full cap, that`ll end our chances of keeping the boy as the premier boys will swoop in jan for sure… great win though!! keep it up lads!

Reminds me of man utd grinding out results in their championship winning seasons. Good job we’ve got the depth of squad for the depths of winter. Well done Mick and the whole club. Keep it going. Proud to be wolves.

Turning into a really boring season. We win every game, Baggies lose every game. No fighting for a play off place and where have all the MM haters gone? Looking forward to a totally boring season where we win the league by twenty points and they beat Derby’s record. Happy days.

a good win but i didnt like the fact that when they had a player sent off wolves seemed to stop playing which gave them confidence and we nearly paid for it,we cannot afford to do this we got away with it this time but a better team would have punnished us,on a lighter note anouther 3 points towards the premiership push lets hope they keep coming from now till the end of the season its going to be a rollercoaster ride so fasten your seat belt its going to be a bumpy ride,WE ARE WOLVES

the blues will loose when we play them, as long as we keep on winning that is all that matters

ok .. super wolves..top of the league..we were lucky today . looked like it was going to be a darts score for the first 30 and then we were lucky to hold on . worried that mancienne will go back now after the england call . hope not .. he is pure class

Another gritty performance, but so many easy missed chances and a lacklustre performance from Kitely.

Great win and on this occasion I don’t mind Wolves being one below the Boggies in the league (Least not when they’re last and we’re top.)
Comment 4 - If you won the lottery, would you say “If only I’d got another ticket !” Who cares what Blues do when our boys win 5 in a row for the second time in 17 games. Rejoyce !

Gornalwolf, probably a fair few chances and at one point we should have been atleast 4-1 up.. But we went to do the job and we did it, another fantastic win.. Another day to be proud of .. COME ON LADS!!

I really think it’s time to put this doubt about McCarthy behind us and acknowledge exactly what he has achieved in his time as manager.
When he took over he had 15 senior players, no money and an uncertain future in terms of ownership of the club. In every area he has taken the club to heights I haven’t seen here in my lifetime. I’m 35 and I’ve longed for Wolves to sign young talanted players for so long and now we are finally doing that. Scouting, finance, passion, commitment, playing style, everything seems better than it has been for many years.
If Mick gets us up he will be the most successful Wolves manager of the modern era, and he deserves our support for what he’s done.
Let’s all get behind the entire team and the manager and show Wolves fans are among the best in the country, lets get a reputation for raising the roof and make teams scared of coming here.
I’m proud to be a Dingle at the minute and it’s McCarthy that’s done that so hats of to the guy.
IN MICK WE TRUST!!!

I was at the game and to be honest we were lucky to get three points as Southampton outplayed us second half even with 10 men. Having said that we should have had the game sewn up if we had taken our first half chances. The marking for their goal (from a corner) was very poor.
My man of the match was Kevin Foley with Michael Manchiene, a close second.

When you dont play your best (as we did for long spells)and still get the win, it shows that there is a lot more to come from this team.
My only worry was the WOLVES supporters did’nt match the teams efforts with their usual vocal support (tense atmosphere close to the home fans!)
Good day out AGAIN!

THIS WAS OUR WORST PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON AND LUCK WAS ON OUR SIDE. THE SENDING OFF CHANGED THE GAME FOR US FOR THE WORST WHEN IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FOR THE BETTER. OUR DEFENCE WAS POOR WE ARE STILL LACKING IN THIS DEPARTMENT. I PERSONLY THINK WE LACK MUSCLE IN THE BACK FOUR. BUT WHEN WE ARE GOING FORWARD WE LOOK UNSTOPPABLE BUT WE CAN NOT ALWAYS SCORE 4 AND 5 WHICH WE WILL HAVE TO IF THE OTHER TEAM CAN FINISH THERE CHANCES. ILL LEAVE YOU WITH THIS THOUGHT CARL IKEME IS GOING ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP HE IS JUST CLASS.

Great result against a team who we haven’t beaten since april 1980, there is no getting away from the fact however, that we were poor, Henry was non existant in the middle, kightly perhaps had his worst performance in a Wolves shirt and Ward kept getting exposed down our left.
Let’s just hope we turn in a performance against Blackpool and then again at blades, before entertaining Blues.
Come on boys!!

We were lucky that the referee gave us so many decisions in my honest opinion. If they had of had eleven players second half then they would have recovered the two goal deficit.
They were supposed to be a poor side, yet they gave us a lesson in football, some of there passing and movement was wonderful to watch.
Yes, we should have been three up after twenty minutes but once they got their goal then we were up against it and it was never a sending off. If one of our lads had been sent off in the same circumstances then I would have been fuming.
We played well for twenty minutes but after that we rode our luck. I’m not getting carried away with the excitement as there is a long way to go and on another day, with another referee we could have just as easily lost that game.
Come on you Wolves though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, the results keep coming and my hair keeps curling.
It’s a long haul ahead, but I think we now have sufficient cover to last it out. I think that it will end up with Wolves and Reading fighting for the automatic promotion spots.
I daren’t think ahead beyond that, as the changes needed to tur us into a real Premiership team are mind-blowing.

Never mind the league positions, this is a GREAT result.
Well done lads, Fantastic!!!!!

Great result yet again, Carlos Edwards looking better every game. Mancienne doesn’t even have to try at this level, class in his blood!.
Bring on Blackpool i say. I never like to think ahead to much but we haven’t looked this capable in years.

I was there. WOlverhampton Wanderers til I die, but the performance was poor. Ask any of the 3000 supporters who travelled if they were lucky and the majority would say yes. 10 man SOuthampton played them off the park in the second half.
Poor finishing by Kighley in the first half stopped us from being 3-0 up, but second half, Saints showed how far we have to go.
Well done Mick for getting this team together, but I reckon that we have a long way to go yet and as far as the Premiership is concerned, on this performance, we will do an ALbion. Boing Boing, yo ay gonna stay there lung! C’mon you Wolves

28. How was the defence poor??? soton had 65% of the ball in the second half and we restricted them to one real chance - when they hit the post.
How does that constitute a poor defensive performance?!?!?!

45, well said! Ikeme barely had a save to make second half. That sounds like good defending considering how much possession they had.

I know this is tempting fate a bit but I’m not sure I agree with many ot the comments on here.
I cant comment on the match because I wasn’t there but never the less think another 3 points is a job well done however we achieved them.
My point is about the blues and boggies, The three of us in the prem along with Villa seems to me to be the way nature intended. In fact much more entertaining than trips to Hull, Stoke, Burnley, Reading or Sheffield.

dosent matter about the performance remember they have been are bogey side the last few seasons & we got the result 3 points.
4- there no need to bring up collins leave the lad alone hes been alright this season.

I have to say we were under the cosh for long periods in the second half. But we set our stall out to defend what we had. And to be honest Southampton never really looked like scoring.

Match Comments:-
1. Kites was NOT at the races
2. We were lucky to get away with a win!!!
3. The whole team never got out of 1st gear
4. We didn’t close the opposition down quickly enough - allowed them far too much space
5. A Keogh when in front of goal was always facing the wrong way i.e his back to goal and was slow to react when he should have passed the ball. This allowed the opposition to get back and defend.
6. Vokes should have been on from the start - in the few minutes he was on he came closest to scoring in the 2nd half.
7. Big Chris and Seb played ok
A LUCKY WIN. WE WILL HAVE TO IMPROVE VASTLY TO STAY AT THE TOP. TOO MANY PLAYERS DIDN’T TURN UP ON SATURDAY!! JUST GETTING THE BASICS RIGHT WASN’T THERE. DON’T GIVE THE OPPOSITION SPACE AND TIME. GET IN THEIR FACES - CLOSE THEM DOWN QUICKLY!! DON’T GO OUT ON THE P*** THE NIGHT BEFORE! BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE SOME OF THEM PROBABLY DID!
I thought Ikeme had an awesome game. The saves he had to make he made and looked commanding in the area. Was simply a good bullet header for their goal. Would be suprised if any premier league keeper would have saved it. Look at us an our goalkeping dept. What harry redknapp wouldn’t give to have a few of our keepers on the books. Especially with Calamity Gomes on form again at the weekend!!!

I was at the game on Saturday and was disgusted by a few so called Wolves fans. Throughout the game they constantly stood up and stopped anyone behind them from watching the game. They also were not there to support the team they were there to goad the Saint supporters. All through the game they were looking at the opposition support and not the passage of play. We didn’t play well but in the end got three points, and,at this point in the season is all we require

54, You sound like the moaners int he southbank. If sum1 is standin up infront of u, Stand up aswel?

I was at the game on Saturday and agree with many of the comments already made. My opinions are…
Positives:
About 3,000 Wolves fans, proving that the fan base is still large outside the West Midlands (Like me, I bet a fair few number where from the south coast area)
Ikeme
Mancienne
Foley
Iwelumo
3 points
For the most part, the entire back 4
Negatives:
With the exception of Carlos, the midfield was non-existent
SEB looked lethargic and disinterested at times
Not giving Vokes a longer run out
The brainless, drunken minority hell bent on goading the Soton fans with foul, abusive and moronic chants, many of which made no sense (i.e. “my garden shed is bigger than this”, when St Mary’s capacity is about 31,000) who seemed to be all-around me.
Although I was pleased that we came away with 3 points, I think Southampton deserved a draw as they looked more ‘up-for-it’ (probably as a result of an unfortunate sending off, IMO). What the match did show me was that the CCC is a competitive league, in respect that Soton looked almost as good as Wolves (not sure what that says about Wolves though)… The gulf between the CCC and the Premier is massive, and the chairman must spend big if we get promoted in May.
Not the best performance but so what. Blues have been playing like that all season. We are not going to roll teams over all the time and so what if we had a referee on our side - it makes a change.
We must beat Blackpool and I reckon Blues will only get a draw at Swansea at best! Then Sheff Utd and Blues - games that we must not lose.
Things are looking good with Jarvis back in a few weeks and I saw Murray got good marks at the weekend!
Sounds like the Southampton game was similar to Cardiff, with 2 early goals, then one agsainst and the Wolves sitting back to protect their lead?
Would have thought with our firepower that we didn’t need to be so cautious but results seem to be proving Mick right, or have we been lucky?
Really looking forward to going up to Molineux on Saturday.

Re Wolves abusive fans at Southampton. I’m afraid I see this lot at all Wolves away games I go to, mostly in London area, which is the only reason I won’t take my son. And if I don’t take my son our family’s long history of being Wolves fans will end with me.
As one of you wrote these thickos don’t watch the game and just spend the whole time goading the home supporters.
You can cheer on the Wolves without the abuse and it would win us less enemies. Does anyone think the club would be interested if a few of us tried to report them to the club by noting their seat numbers? Would be great to be rid of the scum…

We won who cares about the performance. The players are going to have matches where they don’t turn up. We need to expect that, but its better they don’t turn up and we win or would you much rather we play fantastic attacking football and lose.
If you look at teams in the premiership, arsenal on their day will beat anyone then the following week they don’t turn up.
I would much rather we win ugly at times and get three points on the board.
