Baggies plan Premier raid

west-ham-3.jpegAlbion are lining up potential raids on top Premier League clubs for January loan signings after ‘big four’ managers called the Baggies to offer players.

Baggies boss Tony Mowbray today revealed rival managers have already been in touch about farming out their players to The Hawthorns as he warned there will be no mass spending spree in January.

But Albion today suffered a transfer setback when top January target Kevin Thomson was ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

“Some top clubs like the way we play and they think that their fringe players might actually benefit from coming to us,” said Mowbray. “They quite like what we do and they would like to send some of their players to us.

“There are some options for us but the bottom line is I will only take players if I think they will help our team and not just because some bigger clubs are offering.”

Mowbray wants to add a striker and a holding midfielder to his squad in the winter transfer window and has run the rule over Manucho, Manchester United’s Angolan striker.

The 25-year-old reserve forward is typical of the kind of player Mowbray could borrow from the top four clubs and the manager is now eying loans as serious possibility for January.

He held talks with chairman Jeremy Peace and sporting director Dan Ashworth last week and is now pressing ahead with narrowing down his target list.

“We had a meeting and the outcome was that January will hopefully be a time for improving the squad,” said Mowbray.

“I don’t think we’ll be spending £20m, but we have a scouting system working hard to improve the squad at the right price.

“We have options to loan players still and there are some players we need to move on to try to pay for the players who can come in to improve the squad.”

Any hopes of Thomson moving from Rangers were ended last night when Mowbray’s former Hibernian captain was ruled out for the rest of the season with cruciate ligament damage.

I suggested loan players weeks ago, but some Braggies fans seemed to think it not a good idea.
As a short term fix, I think it could be the answer to a lot of problems you seem to be having, one of those being confidence, a few wins under your belt and maybe the players you already have just might start paying back some of the loyalty the fans are showing them.

Would prefer tried and tested players personally, loan players tend to take a month to get match fit too.

Its good news of course, but could of been prevented if Mowbray had of signed strikers in the summer and not now when getting a bit desperate.

I think Vela too … As we are a poor mans Arsenal lets get the Arsenal players not quite good enough to make it into their squad! Desperatly needs a holding midfielder as we cant keep playing infront of teams but going nowhere!

Loan players who can’t get into their own sides aren’t what’s needed. Why should they be committed to Albion? Who’s going to want to join a side with the worst goal-difference in the division? This should have been sorted before the season started. Mowbray’s already talking about “having another go next year”. So this season’s been written off already.

TM is the man. He will only take players who can improve us, and the ones we take will want to prove themselves good enough for the prem. Remember Kieren Richardson? Too me its a win, win situation. Not a fan of too many loanees because it can give a false picture. But in TM we trust!!!!

I can’t belive that genuine fans are critisising the clubs recent transfer policy….

Smitter 4 - every club uses loan players - why will they ned to get fit ?? We have used the loan system to good effect in recent years and I look forward to new blood coming in.

alex 6 - “Let’s keep Peace’s pockets warm with cash shall we…” a more stupid comment would be hard to find. For a club of our size we have spent heavily - we spent almost 15 million in 2 seasons to get out the CCC and now we have broken our transfer record several times trying to stay in the prem.

We cannot buy 10 million pound players cos we aint established enough to attract them - so we hunt for bargains - and most fans would agree that we have done pretty well in that.

The club has spent nearly 30 million since we were relegated from the prem - why not open your eyes and see the progress rather than churning out the same tired old rubbish !!

6 - remind me again how much we have spent on players in the last two years compaired to any other time in our history? peace is a great chairman that doesnt waste money and makes sure our back balance is sound. remember what happened to leeds??? we could all go round splashing the cash but it doesnt work all the time.

9 - firstly players are going to want to come to us beacause the way we play, every manager and player in england knows we play football the right way and it can only improve them and get them noticed by other teams, secondly we had kieren richardson on loan, he did a excellent job for us and in effect kept us up, the list could go on with players we have had on loan that has help us alot, and even signed for us at the end (lets face it who wouldnt want to sign for the best club in the midlands) ;P lol, and knowing TM & JP they would get a sneaky clause in there (loan with a view to perm deal) im all for it, if they turn out to be a plum send them back, no money wasted, if they are another TM gem try and keep them

    ta ra for now….much love

If I was a young star not quite breaking into the team at any of the top 4 clubs, I would certainly be choosing Hull,Stoke or Bolton ahead of the Albion for a loan move. Mowbray will i’m sure get someone but he should have got them in back in the summer when the young talent would have looked at the move in a more positive light.

I read in another place that some Baggies are calling for Mr Mo to be sacked. You are as mad as the Muppet Mick brigade on our side. They are both doing an excellent job at the moment for the long term health of both our clubs.

I suggest by your name you don’t actually go and watch the Baggies, because if you did you would remember the impact Kieran Richardson, had on our Great Escape!!

I have total faith in TM and whilst I have been disappointed in recent results I do not think they will shape our season.

Please can you judge us on what we achieve over the course of a season and not a moment in time i.e. two games where we will have played two of the top teams in Europe.

We all know we need a striker but unfortunately they do not grow on trees and the loan route may be the prefered and only option in getting the right player that fits with our system and style.

I totally believe we will get it right over the course of a season so please try and be a bit more positive and remember we are only in November!!!

    Boing Boing!!

When you are bottom of the league, it is very hard to attract players who are better than what you have already got. Mowbray has failed you by not replacing Phillips at the start of the season and by playing open expansive football. Playing in the championship against good quality players is one thing, playing attacking football against world class players is a totally different ball game. Look at Stoke and Hull, they know their limitations and have been much more effective by numbing the threat of far superior teams. I hope you guys stop up because i’d love a premiership black country derby if we finally go back up.

Loans are a useful option. These are the players with a point to prove. I read comments above about some of these players not being good enough to get into their own respective first teams, well, how many of our lot would get in the Arsenal or Man Utd first team? Not many.
I stated in an early thread that we would be lucky to get 1 point in November. It isn’t going to come at home to Chelsea and I wouldn’t bet on it coming at Stoke either. Roll on January.
