Wolves 2 Burnley 0 - verdict

wd3130982wolves-v-burnley.jpgWolves made it four successive wins with a comprehensive 2-0 win over high-flying Burnley at Molineux.

Two goals from winger Michael Kightly made it seven of the season for the Molineux golden boy, extending Wolves’ lead at the top of the Championship to six points.

Kightly broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, when he tapped home at the second attempt after hitting the post, following a defence splitting link up with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake in a flowing move started by Stephen Ward in his own half.

Wolves made it 2-0 in the 76 minute with a simple close range finish from Kightly, again from Ebanks-Blake’s cross, after the winger had won a header on the half way line following a wayward Dave Jones clearance.

Wolves were always on top and perhaps deserved more goals to reflect their overall superiority, but found them hard to come by against a tough tackling Burnley side, who had six bookings before defender Clarke Carlisle was sent off for a second yellow card in the 79th minute.

Despite controlling huge periods of the game, the only other serious save Wolves forced was Richard Stearman’s header tipped over by Brian Jensen.

They went close through captain Karl Henry, who sliced over on his 100th appearance for the club.

Ebanks-Blake also threatened with an overhead kick in the first half as did Chris Iwelumo, who glanced a header straight at Jensen before half-time.

Well done team, at last we are on our way!

Kightly is rightly called our golden boy, we just have to hope he doesn’t get injured like he did last season. I still can’t see who could replace him, I know that we can’t expect a player of comprable quality to sit on the bench, waiting for Kites to get injured, but somebody with a claim to being a winger would feel comfortable now that we are down to one fit winger. Most forwards don’t ave the sprinting capability of a class winger.

Another outstanding workman like performance ! Mancienne and Steerman look immense at the back as does Foley, and to the “Ward knockers” … pack it in, ! he has become VERY consistent, for me the only negative spot at the moment is Dave Jones who is a littlle too casual at times and gives away the ball too easy.
Lets hope Chealsea splash out on some new center halfs as Mancienne must be top of Micks’s Xmas shopping list !

Mick has learn the lesson to attack, rather than be negative, and most of his signings have been first class! At last, we have the signs of a team that could actually stay in the premiership! I thought Burnley were a thoroughly unpleasant lot and am glad we beat them. Can anyone explain why fouls are given aainst Iwelumo when it appears that he is the one being held down? The player who went down clutching his face towards the end after Mancienne had fairly beaten him to the ball was a disgrace. The Burnley player who rolled around as if in agony and jumped up as soon as he had got the free kick was also a disgrace. I know I’m biased, but we don’t do these kind of things, do we?
Mancienne was magnificient again. Foley may well have been man of the match again. Keogh played well in his cameo and it was good to see him having a shot and getting stuck in. If Ikeme carries on playing this well Hennessey will struggle to regain a place.

Thought Burnley came to play football, but we out played them in every department. The crunching tackles then flew in as they tried to reassert themselves. One of the best performances this season. Not flashy or dynamic just power play, full of confidence and self belief. The back four were excellent. We sat in the Directors box and at the final whistle we spoke to Steve Morgan about Mancienne. Rest assured the Club are very impressed with this player and I have the feeling every effort will be made to secure his services, if the opportunity arises. However there are so many ifs and buts. One final point, we have an owner who’s heart is in the Club. The style of play this season
has been refreshing and I am sure Mick is reacting to the support and direction offered from above.

Every single player including those on the bench and fringe players deserve credit. Its a long time sine I felt so comfortable watching a Wolves team, this back four are superb and the reassurance they give is a vital boost to the rest of the team Lets hope we can continue, although we are sure to suffer the odd setback, but when we do,we must stick together and support Mick and the team 100 per cent.
