Albion slipped to their third defeat in a row as Joey Barton grabbed the headlines for the right reasons at St James Park.

He got a helping hand from defender Ryan Donk, who conceded the penalty Barton converted with just 10 minutes gone.
Obefami Martins made it 2-0 before half-time, before sub Ishamel Miller replied for Albion.
Donk found himself in trouble when he felled Shola Ameobi in the box. Barton, in his first start of the season, converted the spot-kick well, despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Scott Carson.
Albion left themselves a bigger mountain to climb three minutes before half-time, with Martins on hand to nod home Habib Beye’s cross.
The Baggies fought hard to get themselves back into the game in the second half. Miller, on for Chris Brunt in the 54th minute, took just 11 minutes to grab a much needed goal for player and team.
He was the greatful recipient of a fine ball from Robert Koren that left home defender Fabricio Coloccini bamboozled and Miller in behind him.
The former Manchester City forward coolly rounded goalkeeper Shay Given before slotting home.
Miller nearly grabbed an equaliser in the closing stages, only to be denied by Given.

Newcastle were there for the taking and we blew it, we looked slow, our passing was pathetic at times and nobody seemed to want to run-on or make something happen, this pass, pass, pass around footbal is not working and neither is the 4-5-1 system we have used, Bednar was ineffective again, Miller did well and scored a very well taken goal, we need to wake up, buck up and start trying harder or it will be the end of the season and too late, no disrespect to Newcastle but they were rubbish, still wobbling from losing to the mackems on saturday and were there to be beaten, we need to win games like this not throw them away, we have now given a team below us an incentive to kick start their season when we should have been making it worse.
Wake up baggies please before it is too late.

Another poor display for one half of a game. We played well against Hull 1st half & fell away the 2nd with some poor defending. Last night we were under the cosh from the start, & could have been 2 - 0 down after 3 minutes!. Gave the ball away far too easily, dreadful defending for the goals by Donk & Robinson. We then had a reasonable 2nd half. But at any level you can’t just play for 45 minutes of a game & expect to win. Losing becomes a habit, & we are addicted at the moment. The habit needs to be broken on Saturday. Come on you Baggies!.

Only one man to blame…the manager. he got it wrong. Going to Newcastle 4 5 1 to contain a team that was shot of confidence after losing to Sunderland. Negative tactics. It is OK playing pretty pretty football 25 yards from goal, but until we get a cutting edge we are doomed. Maybe strikers like Phillips would have scored the Morrison chance in the 1st half. It wasn’t until Miller came on that we looked dangerous and Newcastle ropey. And was it my imagination or was Zuve not even bothered? If Man U have come in for him then he needs to improve 10 fold on that performance to even get close. Got to win Saturday now, as we have Liverpool and Chelsea coming up. I fear for us.

Watched most of the game last night and I hope you’ll forgive me for making a few observations.
1) A team playing wingers who run at your defence is your big problem. When Newcastle tried to pass the ball through your defence they coped pretty well but as soon as Dunn or Guetierez ran at you i thought the defence panicked.
2) Midfield look reasonable especially in the second half - Greening in particular. However a lot of the time they seemed to be working alone i.e. no link betwenn them and the defence and them and the forwards. When you did link you scored probably one of the goals of the season.
3) Robinson was caught way out of position far too often. This was putting more pressure on an already wobbly defence when Newcastle broke. A better team than Newcastle would have punished you far more severely.
4) Your general play was impressive and you did play some sublime football especially for the goal. It’s the final touch that is letting you down. However you have what it takes to remain in the Prem - you’ll just need the ‘rub of the green’ every now and then.

Same old same old. Lots of pretty passing across the pitch but no penetration at at at all.
Glad Miller got a goal but the defence was really poor tonight. Thought Newcastle were there for the taking at least a draw!!!! This now makes Blackburn a must win and could see us in the bottom 3 tonight. Everyone knew we needed a strike once Philips left and we had at least 2 months to get one. I appreciate we didnt want t opanic buy anyone but Marlon Harewood or MArlon King could have done a jiob for us, even perhaps David Nugent, but then his name isnt Marlon!

What an awful start last night?!
2nd half was much improved and it’s good to see Miller get off the mark, and strange to see Zuiverloon have an off day.
We MUST get a result against Blackburn now!!

Oh, and well done to everyone who went to St James’ Park, outsinging 40,000 Geordies in their own back yard and in their favourite Arctic conditions…..it sounded lovely on the TV!!

Never mind the striker issue what has happened to the defence. Last night and against Hull Donk and Zuvi were hopeless. Last nigh Zuiverloon played a bad pass out, from which Newcastle broke and Donk gave a way a pen that my 11 year old son would not have done. Then Robinso does his usual trick of not stopping the cross coming in and again Zuvi just watches martins head it in, this is made woese by the fact that he almost turned his back on the ball. Barnett had a poor game against the Villa ad is fropped lets see if the two dutchmen get the same treatment. We are not as good as we think we are and though I find it difficult to crticise TM I think he does need to look at the back four, they do not play as a unit in any way shape or form. Up front Bednar needs a rest and again I thouigh Moore looked lively when he came on even though he was pretty much in midfield. We have got to beat Bl;ackburn on Saturday as our run of games after that is not going to yeild many points.
A spirited fight by the lads in the second half but why, oh why did we play with only one striker (yet again) in the first half?
To play with 5 midfielders and 1 forward is to my way of thinking totally negative.
If we had taken it to Newcastle in the first half I believe we would have rattled them like we eventually did in the second half.
I also cannot understand why TM took Bednar off early in the second half and replaced him with the completely out of form Luke Moore? Surely Bednar and Miller would have proven more potent.
Although Miller did score, his first touch still let’s him down and he seems to go to ground too easily for a big guy.
At times you could drive a bus through the Albion defense and I shudder to think of what Chelsea and Liverpool may do to us in the coming weeks.

We badly need Meite to get fit as soon as possible as possible as there is a lack of strength in the back four which last night failed to cope with the physical power of Ameobi and Martins. If TM is to persist with 5 in midfield as he probably will to include Texeira and Kim he must play Miller as the lone striker. Bednar although a clever player does not have the pace for this role. In any event why play Brunt his contribution last night and not for the first time this season was non existent. The decision to let Phillips go was a poor one, both Miller and Bednar were better with him in the team and I think he would have had a least one goal against that suspect Newcastle defence. A case of being penny wise and pound foolish I think.

Dissapointed with our Dutch contingent last night, shame they both had an off night. However we need to keep playing the pretty football but with a more clinical final third!! Did anyone else think we were watching NUTV last night and not SKY SPORTS 2? I have never heard such a one eyed “analyser” as Rob Lee. “We are 2-0 up, i hope We can push on and make it 3 or 4″.All the coverage was about Joey Barton and Joe Kinnear. Think they forgot that there was another team playing!!!

15, So agree with you. Phillips would have made a difference coming on for the last 20-30 minutes for you. Hope you can tweek the team in January as you are more than capable at this level at times.

When will people forget KP his record in the prem in his last couple of seasons was woeful. He is a championship player and even he recognised that or he would have stayed with us. Come on lads a win against Blackburn is a must.
14 Bednar was useless and no one knows what sort of form Moore is as he never playes more than 20 minutes!!!

Our passing the first half was terrible, we didn’t look like scoring. Then 53 minutes gone Mowbray finally goes with a 4-4-2 and hey presto, we look alot lot better.
It doesn’t take a genius to work out a 4-5-1 can work if you’ve got 30 million pound valued players, not trying it with Miller or Bednar up front alone!
My only worry is that January isn’t coming around quick enough, we need 2 strikers desperately, we knew this in the summer and all we loaded up on (again) is defenders and midfielders, can anyone tell me where we’re going to get any points from when our fixtures for the next 2 months are as follows:
Blackburn
Liverpool
Chelsea
Stoke
Wigan
Portsmouth
Sunderland
Man City
Chelsea
Tottenham
I fear we’ll be warming the bottom spot come Christmas.

Agreed, the football we play is attractive and sublime at times but there’s too little in terms of an end product…even if we did score what will surely be one of the goals of the season last night.
Can’t wait for the transfer window now - it’ll be great seeing us hopefully sign the players we need and seeing the Dingles lose their best players to better teams like us.

Filton - Good comments. Great to see a sensible and balanced view from the outside. I agree with your comments with a couple of additions.
1. Newcastle came straight at us after the whistle and it rattled us. That’s what, in my opinion, caused us to start so poorly.
2. To Mo got it wrong. 4-5-1 wasn’t a bad shout, but we were set up to get wingers into the corners and get crosses over. This didn’t work as it was usually Bednar chasing into the corners. What did work was running off the shoulder of the centre halves (Miller’s goal, Mozza’s 1 on 1). He’s human and that’s why the change came so soon in the second half.
3. We didn’t look interested in the first 20 minutes (45 minutes for Zuvi)
We’re not relegated yet, but many more showings like the first 45 yesterday and the last 45 Saturday and we’ll put opurselves into trouble. Play like we did in the opposing half of those two matches, plus a little ‘rub of the green’ as Filton put it, and we’ll be fine. As long as we’re not deep in it when the window opens, we’ll be able to get another stiker in and things will get better.

I suggest we stick to the 442 formation. It can work as it did yesterday in the second half. Another suggestion is to start the next game with Miller and Moore up front. Kim de Hoen will give us more creativity and running in midfield once fully fit and my god that Olsson, forget his miss against Hull but yesterday his passing from the back feeding the attack was impressive especially in the second half. No more Silly mistakes and start playing like you did yesterday (second Half) from the beginning of the match not first we lose then start playing.

Stoke Win or Draw. Wigan! what are we afraid of them Nooo. 3 to draw.

we are more than capable of staying in this league so no real panic (actually no panic whatsoever its just a game of football).

The baggies display in the first half was the worst i have seen for many a year, and i have supported them for 65years.Why did mowbray insist on playing one up front against a team like Newcastle who are low in confidence and where there for the taking. If we had attacked them in the first half like we should have done then we would have won ,it looks like mowbray is turning into a Robson by playing 4-5-1 in every away match. For all the good mowbray has done for the baggies if we lose against Blackburn the fans will turn against him.Look at all the empty seats 10 mins from the end against hull,if it happens against Blackburn then he will have to watch his back because J-P dos not like to see empty seats. And there will be plenty at the next match if we lose against Blackburn

24. Terry….. sorry my friend I missed your posting this morning - no snub intended. Perhaps TM put 5 in midfield in an attempt to stop them murdering you down the flanks, knowing that they would be playing with two very useful wingers ? However, as you say if some of that midfield aren’t doing their share then that’s gonna lead to problems. Perhaps they need to take a leaf out of the MM school book and ‘put a shift in’ !!
Have a good evening my friend.

Last night was the worst display of an Albion team I have seen for many a year.
Zuiverloon was awful and Donk was wonk. Brunt lazy, Valero could not pass water. There was no drive, no chasing back when we lost the ball which was a lot, cause the 1st half passing was crap.
Most of the team looked quite frankley disinterested.
Mowbray has to change it around and quick cos if we had come up against Chelsea, Liverpool etc we would get mullered.
Blackburn is a must win game. It aint over yet but we need more passion a bit more directness in our attack and some lady luck around the box, then we MIGHT be alright. All you Albion fans who think otherwise get your head out of the sand!!
Lets cheer the boys on Saturday. Boing Boing.

Be honest lads.Mowbray has bought some good players, but he has also bought some bad ones too.Your attack must be the worst in the PL, and although the midfield seems to be going well, there are also gaping holes at the back.I can see why Carson is so highly rated, he gets plenty of chance to show it. I would much rather Spurs and Bolton get relegated before you lot, but, come January, Mowbray has to bite the bullet, admit his mistakes, (it only took our clown 12 months to see it !), and get two quality strikers, and two quality centre backs.Easier said than done I know, but, it’s Hobson’s choice really
