Jail for crash after ignoring red light

A motorist has been banned from the roads for the fourth time and jailed for 12 weeks after ignoring a red light and crashing into another car.

Paul Martin Bazeley, aged 33, was jailed at Walsall Magistates Court yesterday after his Rover collided with a Vauxhall Zafira at the junction of Bridge Street and Goodhall Street in the town centre on October 1. He admitted a string of motoring offences including driving whilst disqualified. But denied having no MoT.

He also admitted failing to report an accident, failing to stop after an accident, driving without due car and attention and driving without insurance.

Miss Anjuli Shergill, prosecuting, told District Judge Mr Michael Morris the defendant was travelling along Bridge Street at about 3.15pm in a Rover 600 when there was a collision involving a Vauxhall Zafira turning right from Goodhall Street with the help of a green traffic light.

She said the Zafira driver shouted to Bazeley to stop, but he was unable to avoid a smash.

She said he stopped, but gave the injured party an address for Wandsworth Drive, Kingstanding, where he did not live, told her he was insured by Churchill and gave her a mobile phone number which did not work.

Miss Shergill said when the injured party returned home and contacted her insurer she was told Bazeley was not covered by that firm and she contacted the police when she could not reach him by phone.

She told the court Bazeley was later arrested at his correct address in Copthorne Road, Kingstanding, but officers had to force their way into the property as he did not answer the door.

She said he had previously been banned from the road three times between 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Mr Ian Henery, defending, told the court Bazeley drove through the red light because he had not seen it and gave false details because he should not have been driving.

Mr Morris jailed him for 12 weeks concurrently for driving whilst disqualified , failing to report an accident, failing to stop. He was also banned for 12 months.
