Striker Geoff faces cancer battle

Geoff Horsfield is mobbed by West Brom fans after the Portsmouth matchPopular former Albion and Blues star Geoff Horsfield is preparing for the battle of his life next week when he undergoes surgery for testicular cancer.

The 34-year-old former Birmingham City and West Brom striker was diagnosed with the cancer last Friday.

The diagnosis forced Horsfield to retire from a career he was hoping to extend by winning a contract with Walsall and begin bracing himself for surgery next Thursday.

The striker, a popular figure at both clubs after helping each win promotion to the Premier League, says: “I found a small lump in my left testicle and went to see the doctor at West Brom, who’s a good friend of mine.

“I was diagnosed last Friday and I’m going in for surgery next Thursday. The surgeon has told me that this is the end of my professional career, which is disappointing.

“All I’m thinking about now is beating this. I’ve always been a fighter right through my football career and I’m going to fight this and win.”

Horsfield will be swamped with goodwill messages from a shocked football community around the West Midlands, where he forged a reputation as a tough, uncompromising striker for whom promotion was a speciality.

He led Blues into the Premier League for the first time in 2002 and two years later helped Albion do the same thing following their relegation the previous season.

Horsfield then stayed to play a stirring role in the famous Great Escape campaign before moving on to Sheffield United.

His career was in wind-down after loan spells at Leicester and Scunthorpe last season but he had been hoping for one last shot of glory in the region by earning a contract with the Saddlers.

He now accepts, however, that there are bigger battles to be fought.

He added: “I’ve had 10 good years with Fulham, Birmingham, Wigan, West Brom and all the other clubs I’ve played for and enjoyed it.

“That’s at the back of my mind now. It’s just one of those things and I’ve come to terms with my career being over.

“The specialist told me I did well to find the lump because it is so small. He says I stand a good chance of making a full recovery because we’ve got in early.”

Of further encouragement to Horsfield will be the news that earlier this year fellow professional Matt Duke, the Hull City reserve keeper, announced that he had beaten the same disease.

You are a fit bloke and more than capable of getting over this mate. Good luck!!

Take a look at Geoff Thomas, he is a real inspiration to all that have ever suffered testicular cancer.

Just over a year ago I was diagnosed with exactly the same thing. I’m pleased to say that over a year on I am back at work and I’ve been given the all clear. It just goes to show that if you catch it early enough everything will be ok.
I’m sure you’ll show the same fight and passion to beat this, as you did on the football pitch.
All the best to you Geoff. I know you’ll come through on top.
