Jones backs Wolves’ Wayne

trn-hennessey.jpegGoalkeeper Wayne Hennessey has been backed to overcome the first real blip of his meteoric rise - by former Wolves custodian Paul Jones.

The Wolves No 1 has given himself a fighting chance of retaining the starting spot with his nation for Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein, after spending two days in bed recovering from a stomach bug.

Hennessey managed a light training session yesterday afternoon, as he deals with the first problems of his spectacular progress with both club and country.

Dropped by Wolves for the last match because of “fatigue,” Hennessey is also under massive pressure to hold down the starting role for Wales, with Boaz Myhill hitting the headlines and top form in Hull City’s Premier League fairytale.

The illness came at just the wrong time for Anglesey-born Hennessey, but former Molineux stopper and now Wales goalkeeping coach Paul Jones is convinced this experience will only make the 21-year-old stronger.

Jones said: “He was dropped and that surprised me. He was disappointed and that is great, because that is the reaction what you want.

“He had made a mistake against Reading the week before but he still had a decent game by all accounts, but Mick (McCarthy) made the decision. It is an experience he will have again, unfortunately, but he will bounce back.

“It does happen to a keeper because there is only one spot. I have told him to do his job, enjoy training and look forward to the game on Saturday.

“I accept that he has played a lot, which is draining more mentally than physically. But he is looking fine.

“It will be interesting to see how Wayne reacts, but I have told him he has to bounce back now. It is another part of growing up.”

I think all this is getting blown out of proportion and just putting more pressure on the lad to perform in his next game. Whenever that may be?

He made one against Burnley, never kept hold of the ball and went in his net, but he made an amazing save after that. Same with Reading, he made a brilliant save with his legs.
    No worries at all.

1 - completely agree. It his ability though he is awesome. This is why he’s getting this sort of coverage.

He’s streets ahead of CArson down the road and Corrigan reckons he’s the best he’s ever coached. What does that make Hennessy and without Premiership experience? - yet.

Paul Jones should mind his own business.

He knows all about clangers after he dropped the ball in his own net against Middlesborough and cost us promotion - muppet!

It seems a bit of coincidence that Waynes drop in form corresponds with Bobby Mimms departure as goalkeeping coach

He`s been suspect for a while, Ikeme is average and Murray a crock. £3.5m for carson was a steel and we should look to offload our 3 and buy some real quality.

Hennessey is best goalie for his age in the country, no panic!!!!

    12) shut up

Carson is older and how many caps does he have for England???? and how many clangers has he made for england????

Dont see stories suggesting the top clubs in the country are looking to spend £10 million on Carson!!!

he’s saved us more times than letting us down so keep the faith

Sorry Mr Baggie, but Carson is not in the same league as Matt Murray, although granted, you can only pick who is available. If Matt Murray had not had such terrible injuries he would have been the England number 1. That said, good luck to Scott Carson and England on Saturday. And yes, I realise YOU were talking about wayne Hennessey.

“Dont see stories suggesting the top clubs in the country are looking to spend £10 million on Carson”

And i can’t see these supposed top clubs paying even half that amount for a man dropped from a medicore championship team. Face it he aint as good as some of you make out and if you read the blogs over the last few days it seems some of your lot agree. Fact is he is unproven at the top level, and imo playing for wales just does not count.

If he was that good somebody would have brought him . Yes he may have been watched but where are the 10mill pound offers. Where as Carson plays prem football everyweek, plays it well and is in the England squad. not really an argument is there so give up

    16) i appreciate your point and completly agree he isn’t in the same league as Matt Murry. He is Premier.

But joking aside Matt Murrey is one of the best Keppers i have seen in the last few years his performance when you beat us 1-0 at the mol was awesome, trouble is he is injury prone so will never rise to the level his ablity should take him to. Similar in many ways to Kirkward but having seem them both i rate Murrey higher.

Such is life i am afraid

    1+2 Too right.

Henn’ has shown his merit in this league after only two season of playing really. And 9 clean sheets at Stockport was it? That’s remarkable when you think of his age.

Goalies reach their peak in their late 20’s through to 30’s. So lets have none of this ’sell him’ rubbish after a couple of blips.
We are no longer a selling team, nor should that change… shame he’s not English else he’d have been picked for us instead.

    12) The goal that Carson let in for England, Ironside would have saved.
Believe you me Carson is no better than Ikeme. Murray is the best goalkeeper in the region and then Hennessey and Friedel are equal second!

  21. richwolf64 said:

TO be fair, I agree with Baggie.

Hennessey isnt that good. In fact, I dont know what all the fuss is about.

He can’t command his box to save his life, but granted hes a goodish shot stopper.

Murray stands head and shoulders above him and
head and shoulders above Carson. No offence baggie, but If carson was so good, he wouldnt have signed for the Baggies!

  22. Erdington Wolf said:

answer to 17 nobody wanted Carson, so when you lot came in for him he jumped at the chance otherwise he would have been benched for the season. i’m not Hennesey bigest fan but i would prefer him to Carson

Baggie 12, Carsons in the England squad, really, that is something to shout about. look at the donkeys that will keep him out. (James and Robinson)

  24. BurtonWolf said:

im much rather have murray in goal for the simple fact it seems hennessey seems nervous to come off his line to catch crosses or from corners.
his shot stopping is superb though, and yes he had an own goal , but hey people make mistakes.

we have other keepers just as good and thought ikeme had a good match v bristol but defence let him down at swansea, hope he gets a chance

  25. adi baker said:

    21. spot on! very funny but the truth.
If carson was that good he wouldnt be at the baggies.

Hennessey has been superb, hes still only a kid and will get even better over the coming years.
Such has been his quality we didnt have to go into the transfer market when we lost murray to injury.
We can only hope that Murray can now remain free from serious injuries.

Wolves are very fortunate to have THREE very good keepers….so we will always be able to put one of them in the first eleven.

How many clubs have such an embarrassment of riches in the goalkeeping department?
Answer..not many…and certainly not the baggies!

The future is very bright peeps.

25 - And if Hennessey was that good he wouldn’t be at Wolves. Seems that because Carson is playing in the prem and has done for the whole of his career thus far proves he has a higher pedigree than Hennessey or Murray. I will agree though that Murray is awesome and, if stays fit, is a potentially world class goalkeeper.

  27. zoff2304 said:

I rate Hennessey. I think he’s done a great job since being chucked in at the deep end in the playoffs season before last. He’s made mistakes but every player does.

I personally think Murrey is a better keeper, as people have already said he is awesome, he commands his area better and I always feel confident he’s gonna get the ball, but needs to learn to kick the ball.

The most glaring mistake I can remember Murrey making was against WBA at the Mol in the FA cup when he took out Mark Little allowing the Baggies to score their first goal.

As for Carson, yea he has played for England and yea he has made mistakes, but he has played all his career in the Prem so that has to say something.

    SOUTH BANK FOREVER

  28. West Bromwich WHO? said:

Baggies fans. Please do not get on to the subject of goalkeepers. Why? because you have never had a GOOD one as long as I can remember, and that includes Carson. His ability is more like Kit Carson. The fact that he has played “some” of his career in the premiership means nothing. I can name numerous keepers in the premiership yes ones that have spent ALL their careers there but it don’t mean they are good, that includes Calamity James,Friedel, Howard,Sorenson and your Kit Carson.
