Security drafted in to guard station

lowlevelstation.jpgSecurity guards have been drafted in to protect Wolverhampton’s historic Low Level Station from yobs 24-hours-a-day while bosses desperately try to secure its future, it has emerged.

Bosses behind the two-and-a-half-year restoration project at the landmark site have revealed it is protected with round-the-clock security after admitting it would be “trashed within hours” without it. It is feared the building could be left empty for months until a deal is signed.

Bosses are desperate to protect it from vandals until its future is sealed. The historic site has been put back on the market after a long-awaited casino development was dramatically halted at the 11th hour.

Workers from Claremont Leisure were due to have moved in weeks ago to transform the site with around £6 million worth of machines, poker tables and Las Vegas-style fittings.

But casino chiefs pulled the plug on the project after two years of restoration work to bring the landmark back to life.

The former station building has now been marketed with property bible Estate Gazette in a bid to find a new buyer.

Jonathan Cox, of Oswin Developments which has restored the old station, said: “There is 24-hour security at the site to protect it.

“We have to take the measures because it is likely it would be trashed within a few hours without it.

“We are still at the early stages of discussions with around four people who are interested in the site but it is likely to take some time.

“There has been a good few calls of interest about it.

“There is no set sale price because there is a possibility of splitting the property up but we would still like to see the site transformed into a casino.”

Workers spent two years painstakingly restoring the inside of the ticket office and surrounding rooms to how they would have looked 150 years ago.

The gambling hub was set to be one of the final projects at the £35 million development of the site, bordered by Wednesfield Road and Sun Street, which also includes homes and a hotel.

Once again, our history is raped and pillaged. I don’t know what’s worse..the money men or the yobs. A shocking (but not surprising), example of the Midland’s contemporary ‘culture’..

People seem to forget that these “yobs” are people just like you and me. They are often frustrated young souls who just need someone to show them some love. Instead society lets them wild and thus they will cause trouble.
I blame the general working man/woman for caring too much about themselves and not for our vulnerable brothers.

Actually I think this bleeding hearts twaddle has got society into the mess it’s in. What these poor misunderstood brothers need is a good thrashing

What a load of cobblers. I was extremely poor as a kid, living on the roughest council estate in Stafford, with a single Mum. We didn’t have computer games, the latest clothes, holidays, or even things like central heating or a telephone. However, my brother and I didn’t go around causing trouble, because we’re not bad people. I’m now 23, living in Manchester with a good job. There is always a way out of poverty - you just have to put the work in.

I hate these bleeding heart types - they’re all middle-class! You won’t find any working-class people sticking up for scum. I am a liberal, as in I believe in a welfare state, free education etc, but I don’t believe in making excuses for the types of people who this article refers to.

You seem to have been very lucky in your upbringing and had the love that so many of your neighbours haven’t.
I see that you’re happy now in Manchester and are willing to leave these poor unfortunates back home with no option but to rightfully vent their anger at society/
