Belgian striker is now hot property

Albion could face competition from across Europe if they resurrect their bid for Belgian striker Tom De Sutter in January.

The Baggies have kept tabs on the 23-year-old since deciding not to make a multi-million pound offer in August.

But the Belgium international’s current club have now revealed that Anderlecht and AZ Alkmaar could make rival bids if Albion firm up their interest.

De Sutter has caught the eye of a number of scouts with his performances for Cercle Brugge in the Belgian top division and club president Frans Schotte believes the targetman may favour staying in Belgium with Anderlecht.

“The board of Cercle made it clear that in January we would be prepared to let him leave,” Schotte said. “He has already told us of his preference for Anderlecht, but nothing is signed yet.

“We also know that West Bromwich and AZ are interested, but we will take into account Tom’s preferences.

“The transfer fee is not fixed, but we will not be asking for 15 million euros – we do not want Tom’s career to slow down.”

De Sutter was one of a number of strikers that Albion watched and enquired about during the summer transfer window.

They believed Cercle’s asking price was over the odds, but have continued to monitor the striker’s progress at the start of the new season.

De Sutter seems certain to move on eventually, but the boyhood Anderlecht fan has admitted a move to the Belgian giants would be tough to turn down.

De Sutter said: “I know that Anderlecht are very interested in me and my agent is on the case.”
