Albion recorded a crucial Hawthorns victory against Zoltan Gera’s Fulham thanks to Roman Bednar’s predatory instincts.
The hardworking Czech striker was in the right spot just after the hour mark, to turn home a loose ball for the only goal of the game.
It was no more than Bednar deserved, for another tireless display which was capped when he pounced for his third goal of the season, as the flag kick from record signing Borja Valero bounced around the goalmouth.
Bednar’s goal ensured a miserable return to the Hawthorns for his old mate Gera, who was back for the first time since quitting Albion for Fulham in a summer free transfer.
The Hungarian had a decent game on his old stomping ground. He was also the closest to a goal for the visitors when he missed by a fraction of an inch in the first half.
He collected a cross from the impressive Clint Dempsey then hit a left footed shot that beat Albion keeper Scott Carson but ran just wide of the post.
That miss by Gera ensured honours were even at the end of a goalless first half that failed to capture the imagination.
In swirling winds and steady drizzle, both footballing teams struggled to produce their best, with Gera’s near miss the closest that either team came to breaking the deadlock.
The Hungarian, who received a warm reception from Albion’s fans on his comeback, saw less of the ball after half-time as Albion began to dominate.
Bednar fired a left footed half volley over the crossbar after a fine run and cross by Paul Robinson.
Albion had a near miss when James Morrison’s shot from a Valero corner was cleared off the line.
A minute later, from another flag kick by the Spaniard, Ryan Donk helped the ball across goal for Bednar to force it home.
Then in the dying moments, Bednar rattled the crossbar with a superb long range effort.

Top men. Well done the boys.
every albion fan at this point has got to start wondering if RB is to be our saviour this season.
does he remind anyone else of Lee Hughes??
not the best display this season but another 3 great points on the board,,a nice two wk break now to get the other players fit then bring on manure,,,another clean sheet the brick wall is solid,,MOWBRAYS DUTCHIE BOYS ARE DOING THE BIZZ IN THE PREM,,IN STYLE OF COURSE,,OOOOOOOOOOOOH YES..
Fulham’s best chance was the one from Gera, so why have you chosen not to include all the chances that West Brom had today? We hit the bar and post and had 2 efforts cleared off the line.
You make it sound as if we were holding in when in fact Fulham had little chances on goal.
Go on Roman keep them coming
Oh well another win against a poor, weakened, can’t win away from home prem team, rode our luck, again, should be bottom of the league cause we ain’t good enough……BUT THEY ALL COUNT! Anything to add DINGLES?
A good 3 pointer for the Braggies today, nice to see that after 3 or 4 years of inconsistancy they are pulling it together at last, I can even feel a goal fest coming on.
Well done you BAGGIES,won 3 ,lost 1 and drawed 1,last 5 games ,just wait till this team click into top gear.THE PRIDE OF THE BLACKCOUNTRY.
Ive just had my first nose bleed of the season. Great result under the inclement weather. Applause to our support for Gera’s return. Bet he’d wished he had never gone?
Bring on United.
Carson for England!
Well done chaps, another excellent result. I’ll stay on your pages this week, ours will be full of the moronic few who seem to prefer it when we lose and they can have a go at Mick. Man Utd next, we all hope you win that one and if Mr Robinson can sort out the diving Portugese cheat, then good on him.
another win another clean sheet,we are oozing with quality, special mension too bednar run his self into the ground, fulham never really troubled us,defence looking solid, just need too start seeing teams off quicker, boing boing
To all you sad Dingles who were predicting that the Baggies were going to finish bottom with less points than Derby had last season I would like to point out that 7 games in we need just 2 more points to prove you all wrong. Boing Boing!.
11. Morning Terry my friend Congrats again go to you Baggies !! Our wheels seem to have come off temporarily, but we’ll have em back on soon !! Riding high in the Prem must be a hell of a confidence boost to you guys ? Please Please Please get one over on Man Ure after the international break - love to see it happen !!
10. Malvern, I’m with you my friend… we lose a couple and according to some our season is over !! Some people are never happy are they ?
great win for us weve got a tough trip to man utd coming up so it was crucial for us to win this game glad gera got a good reception overall a great weekend

What a weekend!!!!!! Boing bloody boing…. Englands number 1…. Congratulations Scott, well deserved.
A thread containing comments from our two favourite Wulfs, Malvern and Filton, thanks for the positivity chaps, but thats what we have come to expect from you.
At times it is vey difficult to remain magnanamous toward Wolves, given all the claptrap and bile aimed in our direction, but you always re-dress the balance.
So, a team that have been pulverizing it`s opponents has not become poor overnight, there are some quite mitigating circumstances, the loss through injury to the two most creative players and the ban of your most prolific goal scorer. ANY team would suffer in those circumstances.
I`m afraid some, no, a lot of your number are camped out on the edge of reality, and the sooner they understand that promotion is earned and not a given right for the “mighty Wolves” the better, because they have a huge opportunity, and for what it`s worth, i think they will finish in the top two.
Great performance again - not the free flowing stuff of last year (but there were glimpses), but a real “team” game with some outstanding performances (Bednar, Robbo, Greening.
Also my first game in the Halfords Lane - its looking pretty good.
Great togo into a break on the back of a win - and 9th in the league - COME ON !!!
I’ve just seen on SKY that after 7 games in the prem, wolves had 2 points…. sorry Malvern & Filton, but I just had to mention it.
Also Congrats to Scott Carson on being selected for England - he really deserves it.
18. Wbaforever….thanks for the kind words my friend. Yes we do seem to have a few (!!!) fans that blow hot and cold very quickly !! We also had SEB missing on Saturday so to have your entire strike force out for a game is a huge burden for the rest of the team to carry. I’m probably regarded as one of the Happy Clappers but I will still believe we can get promotion (automatic preferably !) until it is mathematically proven that we won’t !!
Morning Happy !! Don’t have a problem with the truth !! You say that you’re not plying the free flowing stuff of last year but bear in mind your main aim is to survive this year. Anything better than that is a massive bonus and so far you’re doing ok after a rocky start. Like I said earlier I’d love you to stick it to Man Ure in yur next game.
Have a good day my friends.
Happy- how ya doin mate ?
Agree about the performances, Robbo, much maligned by fans of other clubs, the bloke is quality……has he ever played better than he is at the moment ?
I think we have found our new corner taker too,
step forward senor Valero.
Are you sure about Carsons call up ?
I have also heard on news bulletins that Scott is in the squad, but it must be a misunderstanding, because a certain person from the dark side said he would NEVER be called up whilst he was in the employ of WBA,
and we know aforementioned certain person is NEVER wrong.
great news bout carson i bet hes so glad he joined a big club, the season just gets better aint it just great being a baggie fan,im so proud of the lads aye boing boing
apart from hull city ours is the best start ever by a promoted club, arise sir tony, aye boing boing

ME AND WALSALL TERRY THIS IS WHAT WE SING
WE ARE BAGGIES
WE ARE BAGGIES
BEDNER IS OUR KING,,,,,,,,IN STYLE OF COURSE,,
Most definitely not at their best but every point gained is a point towards eventual safety.
Carson, Zuiverloon,Donk, Olsoon, Valero, all shrewd signings and hopefully if Mogga’ can recruit an additional striker in January we culd finish in the top half of the table.
But it’s still very early days and anything can happen.
Great to see and hear the reception for Zoltan Gera before and after the game.
“Gera is an Albion fan” was the chant and judging by his missed chance in the first half it could be true!
What DOES Tony Mowbray do about Ishmael Miller based on his current form?
Yes he need a goal to boost his confidence but if he continues to play more reminiscent of Max Miller (Cyril Randle who know who he was!) then he’ll never break his duck.
Won’t knock the Wolves last two results as they’re nothing to do with Baggies fans.
Lets face it ANY team including Albion will struggle when three/ four of their most influential players are missing.
And i still think they WILL be in the ‘Greed League’ next season.
“Come on you Baggies”
Well done to ‘Super Scotty Carson’ on your england call-up. Well done to Mowbray for another three points. Well done to the team for the effort, skill, dogged defending and wave after wave attacking and well done to the fans, Gera got as good a reception as possible, a reception fitting to a player that, it was on the cards that would be leaving at the end of his contract. But that was never apparent in his performances and effort for us. I heard Robbo getting a bit of stick from ‘one’ fan on the radio, I must say I found this very unfair, his effort and commitment for the cause is and has always been unsurpassed.
Lets enjoy the challenge of Man Utd and try to stay in the top half.
Boing-Boing
Great result for the Baggies this weekend and another game that is proving the critics wrong, as it is my understanding the teams that we said we need to beat at the start of the season ARE the teams we’ve beat without dropping points to them with the teams to beat us being the top 6 who we said would only be a bonus, also the fact those 3 top 6 sides have not dominated us, all this stands us in good stead for what hopefully will be an enjoyable and comfortable 1st season back in the Prem.
Also got to mention Zuiverloon as well as the names listed in posts above, this guy gets better each game, surely already this bloke has at least doubled his price tag he was outstanding on Saturday. Totally new defence 2 clean sheets…fantastic
Well done Scotty Carson on the England call up, fully deserved.
(sorry if this seems a tad all over the place, having to bit write it whilst gaffer sat behind me)
awesome news on Carson!
loving it! I’m far from 100% that he will p-lay in all fairness but hey its a start, is he our first England international since Astle got in there?? How many years is that now?
Hi Forever, good to hear from you and thank you Happy for the memories of our brief stay in the promised land. I took my kids to Blackburn to share in our historic day but after 30 minutes we were three down and had not touched the ball(apart from kicking off). We improved and although we conceded two late goals actually did much better than the scoreline suggested. We were then outplayed by Charlton and Chelsea and looked like going down without a point.
However we improved, beat Man U at home and should have won there(I still hate Camara), drew with Liverpool and by the end of the season we could easily have stayed up. In fact if we had started like you have we would probably have finished mid table.
Happy days!
TONYWBA,,tell the gaffer to do one,,its a must on a monday morning in it to come on here, its like going to church its our religion,,we have to have our say on supa mows boys,,,THE WALL IS SOLID,,MOWBRAYS DUTCHIE BOYS DOIN THE BIZZ,,IN STYLE OF COURSE,,OOOOOOOOOOOOOOH YES..
hey worcester hope ya got ya passport sorted,we guin on our baggie travels,O THIS YEAR WE OFF TOO SUNNY SPAIN A V VI ESPANIA WE CATCHING THE SUPER BAGGIZ PLANE A V VI ESPANIA,ay it great bein albion fan,aye boing boing
What a nice feeling it is to come on here again and not be swamped with hatred and bile… it actually feels like a footy forum again…
Forever - yeah I had to double check the Carson call up - but then again that certain person also put all his money into HSBO shares last year…
The whole defence looks superb - and we still have meite, barnett and Hoef as back up. If we had got this line up last season we would have gone up with 150 points !!!!!
Malvern & Filton - its tough when you are missing key players - however this is where the manager earns his dosh - as TM did last season when we had so many players out with knee injuries….. however you will bounce back once your forward are fit.
Just to add to Terry Wills comment about Gera - after all the bad press about Sol campbell and spurs, how brill was it to hear Zolly get a great welcome - you gotta love the baggies fans !!!
Bring on ManUre !!
Agreed, a great outing on Saturday, a fantastic start to the season, oh, and an England cap to boot.
Lest we forget, a quick plug for Moore, who I though contributed well. His 1st touch on the RHS of box, put Rocco away for a great cross.
Next, he won a ball in the air on the LHS of the box to bring in Bednar if my memory serves me well.
Within 3 minutes, I felt he had contributed much more positively than Miller had in the prior 60. It was a pity that Rocco was unable to return the pass later on in the game and surely that would have been 2-0, game over.
I sense Moore is a more likely partner alongside Bednar when TM opts for 442, all he needs is some game time, the odd goal, and our support.
All in all though, a great result that was well ground out, and Fan-tastic support once more.
Oh - and there was actually a moment on sat night when i was gutted Man Utd won cos they went above us…. CRIKEY !!!!!!!!
hey worcester remember couple of weeks agoo when cocky dingles was sayin they only one place below us,now they one place below brum and we one place below man u and only 2 points off europe, a week is a long time in football aye boing boing
morning happy, forever etc etc. great result, great support, and yes happy, we’ve got a forum going again. Can i say your input has been sadly missed, but after talking to bomber i fully understand why. I know its early but i really believe that we are where we are because we deserve it , and i have to say we are where i thought we would be. T.M. has brought together a club not just of talent but of a geniune spirit where the football and friendship are the most important elements. Some great signings that can only gat better.
35,happy, never mind mate when we beat at there place we will go back above um,aye boing boing
Hi guys and girls, we are happy bunch arent we!!
ne thing that has been slightly over looked is the fact that we have quite a few injuries at the moment and have just won back to back games and not conceded. Clement, Tex, Kim, Meite, and Brunt all out but not once did you hear Mowbray try and play on the fact.
I see the transfer rumour mill has started to turn, i hope Mobs is looking at strikers, i would hate us to miss out on a European place!!!!
baggie showed their class with the welcome that they gave to gera? reason because he gave 100% even in the games towards the end of last season, not like glessfoot (davis).got a photo of him upside down at the mol,if i could id get it blowed up to 6ft square id put it in our front room…
23. GET YA FACTS RIGHT BEFORE SPOUTING OFF, THE RECORDS SHOW THAT FOREST AND BLACKBURN THEN HULL HAVE THE BEST START FOR A PROMOTED TEAM. IDIOT!
41 go and join the doom and gloomers on your own page boing boing!!!
Good result for you boys - it could have gone either way but you stuck it out, got a bit of luck and got the 3 points.
You still need someone who will score goals but you’re up there with the Middlebrough, Bolton, Fulhams of this world.
It’s a long way to go but you and Hull could well survive this season. Stoke won’t.
Best of luck. Just hope we’re up there next season too.
I thought Bednar worked tirelessly all game and although he’s not the most skillful player on the pitch he has the ability to cause opponents so many problems because of his physical presence and willingness to run. Similar to what Carew did to our defence a couple of weeks ago. I expect Roman to get the nod when we revert back to 4-5-1 at Man Utd in 2 weeks time.
Can’t say enough about the defence and Scotty Carson, back to back clean sheets in the Premiership is no easy task but the new lads are beginning to gel. This is the best back line we’ve had since i can remember. We have speed, height, strength, athleticism, skill and they all have attacking qualities too.
Well done to Carson on his England call-up; fully deserved and is the first sign that the people that matter are starting to sit up and take notice of the Albion. Be afraid, because we’re coming to a ground near you….soon.
Well done Baggies see you in the prem next season
