Wolves wingers face lay-off

reading31.jpegMatt Jarvis has been ruled out for two months and Michael Kightly up to four weeks as Wolves were left counting the huge cost of their first defeat of the season.

Jarvis was stretchered off after tearing his hamstring in last nght’s 3-0 loss to Reading, while Kightly strained his hamstring.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy said: “Jarvis has torn his hamstring and he’ll be out for at least two months. Kightly has a hamstring strain and we think it will be at least three to four weeks before he will be back in contention.”

Stephen Ward could return for Saturday’s trip to Swansea despite suffering badly bruised ribs, as Wolves suffered their first reverse in 14 Championship games going back to April 15.

McCarthy said: “Hopefully, Wardy could be OK for the weekend. I thought he was terrific against Reading. He was accidentally caught on the chest by Karl Henry’s studs and was in a lot of pain.

“The medical staff assessed him at half-time and gave him the green light to carry on.

“The fact he didn’t want to come off is a testament to his character and he only did so towards the end, when he was having trouble getting his breath.”

Wolves are already without long term injury victims George Elokobi, Jody Craddock and Matt Hill.

The absence of the two wingers who have caused such devastation to the opposition is a massive blow to Wolves’ hopes.

The pair, who only played together four times last season because of injury, have been two of the mainstays behind Wolves’ flying start, creating countless chances while Kightly has also scored four goals.

McCarthy admitted losing his wingers for the forseeable future is a huge loss.

He said: “The cost to the team is far greater than three points. The loss is huge. ‘Kights’ was getting progressively worse and he had to come off, so perhaps we caught it before too much damage was done.

“Maybe the two hamstring injuries were an indication of how hard they worked, because the way Jarvis had got back was amazing.

“Andy Keogh has also hurt his knee and lower back.”

just hope jez and morgan allows mick to dip into the loan market and gets a young premier winger on loan to cover this loss, will make a big difference to wolves without kites and jarvo.

Food for thought…..DJ on the left and Gobern on the right would be like for like changes. I don`t know how ready they are but we must stay with pacy attacking play. Gray and Keogh in wide areas would mean we play all our footy infront of the opposition like last season. Has Mick got the bottle to do it ???

  4. wolfmeister said:

See its all good and well bragging how many miles these pair have been covering but if you keep pounding your gonna get injured.
I just hope Mick has got a backup plan. We know Gray can play as a winger but who can play the right. Will they be as effective?

  5. rich5wolves said:

Oh dear, the two best footballers in our team are out for ages………….Jarvis wont be back for more like 3 months id say, and Kightly will be lucky to kick a ball within a month. Ive torn a hamstring before. Ouch.

  6. deeps said:

big big lose… our poor form last season was due to the lose of javis and kights….

i guess MM will play keogh and ward on the wings… it didn’t work last season, will it work this season?

what about gobern? time to use this big squad of ours… round pegs in round holes please MM

    come on you wolves!!!

  7. Richy said:

Not good news, hopefuly kites will be back for cov or the norwich game, it will be interesting to see who will play on the left side. Does anyone know if George Friend is fit? Now we will see how good we are. Fair play to reading they were just better than us.

  8. IdratherBaDthana. said:

Its a big blow, but whoever comes in needs to pick up the reins and keep the momentum going. If Wolves start to go defensive and change the style of play, it will be a big mistake. The squad needs to stand up and be counted, fight and work as hard as the injured troops. SEB is full of goals…feed him.

Damn it!! To lose one is bad luck, to lose both in the same match to the same injury is appalling!! Time to get a loan player in Mick, as we simply do not have the natural width and creativity these two provide elsewhere within our squad. Injuries to Kightly and Jarvis helped derail our promotion bid last season - let’s hope it doesn’t have the same effect this time around. We are just so fecking unlucky when it comes to this sort of thing…

  12. yamyam said:

be interesting to see MM’s plan b now with kites and jarvis out! get keogh out though, yes he puts in an effort but hes not up to scratch! he won no headers against bristol and only one or two last night! give ward a run out on the left wing and bring this george friend! COME ON MERLIN!!!!! UP THE WOLVES!!!

this is exactly what we all feared would happen , i didnt expect it to happen in the same game though, this is massive loss were gonna struggle now thats for sure, i just hope we can grind out a few results until there both back.

Absolutely gutted, thank god we got such a good start to the season because i can’t see us picking up much points without these pair! It’s about time Gobern shows us what he’s got so here’s his big chance, also why not get these kids in i keep hearing all about, there’s some chap chelsea and Man city are after, might be young, but worth a mention!

  19. IanTheLichfieldWolf said:

Really we have to just try and tread water for a while. It’s tremendous credit to the lads that we’ve built this cushion for ourselves points-wise after tough visits to Ipswich, Charlton, Preston and visits from Bristol City, Reading etc…

A point at Swansea would be perfectly acceptable then a much-needed break for 2 weeks with Iwelumo to return.

Whilst we have a strong squad the wings are where our cover is poor. A loan move for a Premiership winger would be just what we need I think.

  20. wolfhound said:

Time to look at the loan market maybe Adam Johnson or Wayne Routledge or Jermaine Pennant if not bring back Gleeson from Stockport.Hope MM does not try to fit square pegs in round holes, decisive action required time to earn your money Mick

  21. local_bloke said:

Good game last night but not the result and obviously kites and matty will be missed. Nothing we can do apart from get behind the team and support them no matter who pulls on the old gold and black. Will be a difficult game at Swansea as they are on a bit of a run themselves. I’d certainly start with vokes and SEB upfront. SEB seemed to be the one tasked with holding the ball ball in the second half. Surely Vokes should be doing the holding up and SEB playing off him. I’d try edwards and gray on the wings but to be honest I think the workrate and impact that kites and matty had will be difficult to duplicate. As always, come on Wolves!!!

  22. Jon said:

    1. You idiot!!!! it is a loss but its far from season over.If Kightly is out for 4 weeks then the best part of two weeks in a international break so he will probaly only miss two matches.

Jarvis is a loss but come on weve only lost one match and people are all doom and gloom.

We wont have to face a team like Reading every week…KEEP THE FAITH

  23. Ragster said:

Don’t make the same mistake as last season Mick, bring in Adam Johnson from Middlesboro, he’s a quality winger who may be available on loan?

    Up the Wolves!

  24. Wolvensam said:

George Friend LW and just play Keogh (admittedly grudgingly) on the RW for Swnasea and if Kightly has no chance of being fit for Coventry then loan a player a la Wayne Routledge or Carlos Edwards during the international break.

  25. wolvesmod said:

People are forgetting that we have International Breaks coming up. Aswell as a Loan Market.

    Muppets.

  26. NOT the comfy chair! said:

Well said 7. I was at the game and Reading were the better side and thoroughly deserved their victory. It’s important Wolves don’t become too down cast. It still represents an incredibly good start to the season. For me, it’s how we bounce back from the set back. Let’s avoid defeat on Saturday and then go into the break still TOP OF THE LEAGUE and re-assess the situation. Good luck to Kites and Jarvo on their recovery.

  27. IdratherBaDthana. said:

Jermaine Pennant could do with a month of football before he moves from Liverpool!

  31. Molly Knew Mick said:

I absolutely agree that this is where Mick proves his quality or otherwise!

We have been dreadfully unlucky with injuries but on the last day of the transfer window, we were all questioning the lack of cover for the wingers and we buy 2 left backs!

If we go into bunker mentality mode and try and grind out results, we will struggle. We need to keep the same basic shape and style of play because let’s be honest, Reading could have scored six so the defence is not going to withstand concerted pressure week after week!

Both players are a great loss but if we truly are a promotion-winning team and not a Championship team with a couple of Premiership class players, now’s the time to prove it!

  32. Wolves1877 said:

I have no doubts whatsoever that MM is on the phone all day today to bring in two wingers from prem clubs, as we know Wolves keep their dealings quiet untill it’s a done deal so let’s wait and see before it’s all doom and gloom. SOTA

  33. Wulf said:

Devastated!! We must have the worst injury list in the league! Our season will now have a very different look to it.
Adam Johnson is nearly a first team Middlesborough player so I’m not sure if we could get him.
Dan Jones isn’t half the player Jarvis is and Gobern has disappeared- IS HE FIT??? We’re certainly not going to be scoring 4 or 5 goals in a game for a while.
It’s a good job we’ve made such a good start. Absolutely Gutted!

  40. Norway Wolf said:

The lack of winger cover was apparent this time lasy year. We lost both wingers last season and look what happened. We just ground out dire football, which must not happen again!

Stand-in wingers don’t work; while forwards run with a ball, wingers sprint with it and need a different mindset.

No more Ward and Keogh as wingers, I beg you MM! I predicted this would happen during the close season, but I was shouted down, we have always needed winger cover since Mick put his first team together.

A winger on loan from a Premiership club is the only acceptable solution if we really have got Premiership ambitions. The rainy day has arrived, get ready to spend.

  43. wbabomber said:

Not good news but hardly an end to the season, some of the posts on here are laughable. Within any league you are only as good as your squad, so far you are cruising along at the top of the league, you have won games before without both Jarvis and Kites. Get a grip some of you, season has just begun not ended.

  44. baggie steward said:

u can av miller hes useless like ur team

  45. Andy said:

Surely our excellent start to the season must make it easier to attract good quality loan signings. Last season, we stuck rigidly to a system that didn’t suit the players available - and we all know the outcome. Elliott, Ward, Keogh, Eastwood, Bothroyd were all tried as wingers - we haven’t got the cover so either change the formation 4-4-2 with David Edwards playing just behind the front two and maybe Gray as a left midfielder or we really do need to take advantage of the loan market. Wayne Routledge is hardly getting a game at Vile, nor (dare I say it) is Kevin Kilbane at Wigan.

It’ll be Grey on the other for sure.

the injuries are unfortunate but you have to expect this in football! kights will be back for either th coventry or norwich game.
its still only 1 loss this season - can we please all stop bein so negative & get behind our boys!
    this will be our season!!!

Maybe now MM will give Daniel Jones the chance he deserves, if not he may as well leave for his own sake, also Micky Gray is a far superior wide man than Andy Keogh.

  61. laughingwolf said:

this is where panic buttons should not be pressed. mick has to learn from last seasons mistakes, which he will and get routledge in on loan and look at 1 of arsenals kids for the left wing. the way we have been playing we need wingers not defenders playing on the wing. dont forget dave jones can play left mid and get dave edwards in the centre.scott sinclairs a great shout.

    4-4-2 or 4-3-3 ?

We will still win games!! Swansea will be tough if Keogh is out as we need a right sided winger but maybe alls not doom and gloom. Iwelumo will be back after Swansea too. After Swansea Iwelumo and Keogh will be ok to play and Kightly hopefully only will miss 2 matches……. Smile people, we still have an ok squad to choose from and these things happen.

66 - Injuries effect most teams at some point in the season, it will even effect you at some time so don’t talk of others and concentrate on your own team. I have a feeling we will still do ok without our main 2. But focus on that if you want while Mick and co move on.

  74. TonyWBA said:

    De Ja Vu it seems.

I did wonder how long it would be until Kightly was crocked again, but it does seem a shame that a talented player seems like he will be blighted by injury so often.

You’ve had a fantastic start to the season irrelevant of last night, if I was gold and black minded I’d be crossing my fingers tight that the players that come in can come in with the confidence that has been picked up over the 1st month and half of the season as it great when things are going well, but when backs are against the wall it only takes little things to turn what has been positive into a negative.

  75. G&B army said:

Massive blow and I think we will miss Jarvo more,.. but were still top of league and had a great start to lets hope rest of lads and pull together!…MM made what i think was his 1st mistake of season dropping Keogh into midfield, he was none exsistant and it was like playing with 10 men, Reading were well organised and we needed Edwards on so we had at least a proper midfield out there..
p.s. never thought id say this but Ward and Collins were exceptional last night.

  76. Bournemouth Wolf said:

The worst fear has come to fruition! Both wingers out and Jarvis probably not back until January if truth were known. These two are the teams achilles heal, one out is bad enough, but both..Hmmm!

  79. Wesport Wolf said:

raffo and others. What’s with all the negativity? Raffo’s first comment was… season over! What a genius. Try engaging your brain before you speak/type. We’ll get through this. Yes it’s bad, but there’s still 38 games to go. Kightly might miss 6-8 of these while Jarvis might miss 8 to 10. That leaves approximately 30 games for kightly to play in and 28 for Jarvis. And let’s not forget we have a big squad and there are 11 players on the pitch. How often will we play a team as good as Reading? Be realistic and get some positivity.

But there’s nothing to get carried away over now we’ve lost just one game. It’s still a fine start, and we’re still top.

No matter what happens on Saturday, we’ll still be in an Automatic Promotion place, and ahead of the 2pts/game target.

Jarvis is a big blow imo.. a bigger blow than Kites.. I thought kites looked a bit tired on saturday and not his usual self last night.

Im sure that MM knows what he needs to do and if that means dipping into the loan market im 100% SURE that Morgan and Moxey will back him…

But, I think he will move Collins to left back and play shackell at the back with Steven Ward on the left flank… and I reckon he will play Gray on the right…

Its a set back but lets just keep our heads up and keep rolling with the punches… No one said it would be easy!

    Don’t panic Captain Mainwaring!!!!!

Ok so we have lost arguably our two most immpactive players for a couple of weeks, big deal!! This will give some other players a real sniff at an opportunity in the first team. George Friend can play down the left wing or at full back and if i’m honest Stephen Ward has done exceptionally well and even whipped in some decent crosses of late! Don’t forget Mickey Gray can cut a dash down the wing for 60 minutes!

Kevin Foley was outstanding all night but showed some real attacking promise towards the end, could that be good enought to provide some temporary cover for Kites??? Dave Edwards looks a real threat and with Iwelumo back we will look a different team up front.

Premier teams will want to be loaning out some of their youngsters as well as fringe players such as the Pennants and Sinclairs of this world, I am 100% confident that we will see some cover come in on loan particularly if they can see that they will be getting first team action and particularly seen as though we are top of the league!

This is the real test of our mettle and I am quite excited to see how we react! There’s 100 odd points yet to play for 90+ of which Kites will probably be in contention for!

Keep your chins up Wolfs, its one loss to arguably the best team in this league, the pressure of the unbeaten run is gone now its time to knuckle down and show the rest of the league how to grind out results!

    Come on me babbies!!!!!

    my team for saturday

    Hennessey

    Foley, Shackell, Stearman, Ward

Dave Edwards, Jones, Henry, Daniel Jones or Gray

    Blake, Vokes

Think a certain Gleeson needs to come back from his loan spell at Stockport…. and NOW!

Afraid a simple solution would be to bring in Gobern, but as we all know he is a long way off first team football for us with the injuries along with Mark Davies.

I am hopeful we can keep going, but if with them both we struggled against Reading, imagine what the blues will do to us in a few weeks!!!

  94. ilkeston wolf said:

Well the way Reading out foxed MM on the night it is highly unlikely there is a plan B. He tells us Dan Jones is not a left back so we must assume he will get automatic selection for the wing. Keogh will of course get the right side as no matter how inept his performances MM sees no bad in him.
Had we been using a left back with some positional sense then Jarvis would not have picked up the injury covering the wide open space that was our left side of defence.
We can still pick up points in the interim but desperately need both wingers back as soon as possible, its all down to seeing if there is a plan B from our great leader.

  95. Timmiswolf said:

So are you saying, Wossa (67), that it’s MM’s fault that we lost because he said that we were due a slap? Don’t you think that perhaps he was just trying to keep young players grounded, focusseed and on their game? Is it his fault that Hennessey made a rare mistake and then appeared to lose confidence against a side that was always going to punish nervousness at the back? Do you really think that Kites and Jarvo wouldn’t have got injured if “officialdom” hadn’t said that “we will be in trouble if we lose our valuable wingers”? What has MM got to “keep it shut” for? Does he really have the power to influence future events in the way you seem to suggest? If he does, perhaps he could start by suggesting a few ways in which Swansea’s chances this season might be hampered.
Amazing isn’t it? We’ve had an incredible start to the season - but one defeat (which is neither here or there) and two injuries (to superb players that MM brought to the club and blended into a system that was proving too much for other championship teams to handle) and suddenly the daggers are out for Mick again. Some of you are unbelievable. I want to say that you don’t deserve success (because you don’t) but, of course, desperately hope that you get it: 1)because the rest of us - supporters (i.e. those who support)- deserve it and 2) it would shut you up.

  96. SirJaksFolly said:

Jeez. You lot are real doom and gloom merchants. You are clear at the top of the league, you ain’t even 1/5 thro’ the season and some of you have given it all up.

If you are so reliant on just 2 players then learn to play a different formation when those players are out. Time for MM to don his tactics cap. Oh dear, maybe you are doomed if you have to rely on just putting a shift in.

  97. Banner Wolves said:

all you negative people shut up, time to stay solid especially with the start weve had. there is still plenty of confidence in the team of whom i believe will carry that forward until the injured players return.
get behind the team do not ley them down because they have not let us down this season, they have played their hearts out and run their socks off.
now let’s do the same for them, they want to hear us cheering not back stabbing.

  98. Wayne Goodall said:

It’s a massive blow to have both Matty and Kites out for any period of time!! i am hoping tho it will mean Lewis Gobern is given a chance to shine again now however as was an admirer of his football when he was last fit and in the team….

  99. Jonny B said:

67 I fail to see how MM can be blamed for two injuries which no one saw coming. However this period will show just how good MM is if he can see us through this period and still be up near the top of the league come Christmas he will have proved he is up to the job. Good managers are made out of adversity, anyone can manage when everthing is going well. As omeone else said over to you MM.

We’ll be okay if Mick doesn’t persist with what didn’t work last season. Time to give Keogh a rest: David Edwards would make a better striker.

This season has been a bumpy ride already, with injurys & suspentions & we keep bouncing back, we ARE a very very good team & will continue to be, kites will prob miss the w end match but then we have a break & hopefully will be ok after that, we can get one the guys to slot in for Jarvo, who, I think has been carrying a knock for a couple of weeks & wasn’t playing great before he went off last night.

    Keep The Faith

Big Squad!, Big Squad! Big squad my ass, if we have so called “DEPTH” then why are people like keogh who hasn’t got a clue on how to play on the wing and how to cross he can’t even play in his normal position properly cuz he can’t SCORE or even SHOOT. As 4 gray i love the guy his work rate is amazing and he CAN repeat CAN CROSS A BALL and is a gd dribbler but me nan can run faster so he aint the man 4 the job. Totally agree wiv No.3 give DJ a go he was brilliant when he played in the cup and has great pace. As for gobern i haven’t really seen him play but i hear he’s pretty fast. I definately agree wiv the peeps who say dip into the loan market. I’d target arsenal look how well there youngsters did in the cup they have some quality players look at whilshere(Right Winger) he is amazing and just what we need and he’s only 16 so get him on loan! Also fran merida he played left wing for them in the cup, 2 brilliant players from there youth and reserves so a great oppurtunity for them and for wenger and a great bit of business for us. DON@T BE DON IN THE DUMPS HAVE FAITH IN OUR PLAYERS AND DEFINATELY MM.
    CUM ON WOLVESS!!!!!!!

Thank you Bomber for such a sensible post among all the rubbish ones. We had to lose at some point and we knew we would have injuries, we just need to keep the faith. Some of you are pathetic beyond all reason.

i think we need 2 dip into the loan market in all honesty. scott sinclair would b gr8. tbh, i can see mick movin ward 2 the wing and putting george friend at left back.

exacly Wolfster… we cant return to Keogh et al on the wings… it got us nowhere last season

and Mick is now realising the error in not having any cover.

Damn, i fear a return to last year’s team.. Draw Loss Draw Win Draw Loss if we dont sort out decent replacements for Kites an Jarvis

Come on Mick, make a plan

Hardly slept a wink last night, I wudda settled for a draw before start of play. But to lose like that and lose our supply has left me with no fingernails. trying to stay positive but a result at Swansea to stablise us is imperitive methinks.

  121. a_tatter said:

Gray played right midfield last season but not surprisingly he was using his left foot which meant he always came inside defenders instead of taking them on down the wing. He did OK but this is far from ideal. I think Edwards would be better there or even Vokes

  122. Muppet the legend said:

Why are you all doom & gloom? If you’re as good as you all claim you can handle injuries to your best players, that’s one of the differences between champions and also rans.

Albion did it last season with loads of injuries and as MM said at the start of the season that he wanted Wolves to play like us and emulate us then you’ll have to handle it!

  123. pip said:

Reading were better on the pitch and tactically far superior, wolves struggle with Mid week games, MM should learn a lesson and use the squad, you cant always play 2 wingers against the better teams.Edwards can do a job on the wing and so can Wards,i hear you all groan.Team for Saturday - Foley,Shackell,Stearman,Collins,Ward, edwards,Henry,Jones,Ebanks, Vokes- Keoghs injured.

FFS - i see the worldbeating (boro)steptoes have got out of bed this week (must be dole day). So Mk & MJ are injured, its why we have a 28 man squad. For sure MMs got to manage this and this is what he is paid to do. I dont thing he will changed the system from 442.
I’ve looked at our squad and can only see keogh, Stuart Gray or Denes Rosa (if he’s still with us?)as a wide option. Havnt seen Vokes so i dont know if he cant do a job there?
Lets forget about steven Ward, hes is NOT a winger.Failing that he needs to get a short term loanee.

I don’t believe what I’m reading here, we suffer 1 defeat against arguably the best team in the league and we get comments like SEASON OVER.
Unless you happen to be in your 60s you have NEVER seen us have a better start to a season, we’re STILL top of the league and there’s still 30 odd games to go.
A bit of reality please guys, what DO you want?
It IS a set back losing Jarvo and Kites but I doubt very much that our season is over.
