Mick McCarthy has warned Wolves they are due a kick up the backside as he revealed how he’s ‘a constant thorn’ in their sides.
Table-topping Wolves go into Saturday’s 12.30pm clash against Bristol City on the brink of their best start since 1949-50 after six successive wins.
The Molineux chief insists his players can’t afford to take their foot off the gas.
He said: “We’re not suddenly having days off or coming in late – the standards haven’t dropped. You keep doing the same things – win, lose or draw – and I really try to be a constant thorn in their side.
“I’m enjoying it but you won’t get me waxing lyrically about it. As a football manager who’s been in the game a long time and as someone who’s been in this league, I know a kick up the backside is just around the corner.
“We will get one – no question – but it’s how we all react to that. I just hope it doesn’t happen to us soon because we’re enjoying the run we’re on.”
McCarthy is speaking from experience as he won the Championship at Sunderland, after picking up five points from the first six games.
He said: “We won that league by eight points, but we were 11 points behind Wigan at one stage, so we had a turnaround of 19 points.
“So that’s my concern. Just because we’re in a better position at the moment, there will be someone down the bottom such as Derby, whose mentality will be one of wanting claw points back.
“If they get on a roll, who’s to say someone else can’t get six wins from six games?”

I feel the kick up the backside could be self inflicted (I hope I am wrong), but the bone head Iwelumo should never have got involved in that incident at Preston on Saturday. He is on an absolute crest of wave with his form, playing in an unbeaten side, what more could a 30yr old player rescued from the back water of Charlton ask for. Whether we think he has been wronged by the FA & whether we think the FA favour the Prem Clubs yes,we know they do. The intent from Iwelumo was there on the pitch for all to see. He was pumped up, as he had given their defence a severe going over all afternoon, but he would have been better off putting his head to the ball for his fourth goal rather then aim it at a fellow professional. I believe he should hold his head in shame for letting his team mates down & more importantly the fans because these players know a staight red means an automatic 3 game ban. The 3 games he will miss could put our brilliant winning start to the campaign at real risk. Sam Vokes please step up & kick start your career with Wolves (you have already scored 3 this season) & maybe Iwelumo may have to suffer an even worse self inflicted exhile of more then 3 games. Perhaps the Wolves management should have also increased the 3 game ban with some in house discipline.
