Dwayne Mattis has targeted more goals for Walsall after ending a personal scoring drought of almost two years.
The midfielder notched his first goal for the nine-man Saddlers in their spectacular 1-0 win at Brighton on Saturday to claim his first goal since December 2006.
Mattis recognises the need for him to find the net regularly and is planning a few more raids into the opposing area, though will not be forgetting his defensive duties.
He said: “For a successful team, you need to be raining in goals from everywhere and the midfield have got a job to do to get goals.
“We have to help out the defence as well as help out the strikers. I won’t put pressure on myself by naming a target but I hope to score my fair share.
“When I was at Bury I was an attacking midfielder, so I managed to get quite a few so I am just glad to get the first one out the way.”
The 27-year-old also believes there is more to come from him, after he completed only his second game of the season following a knee injury picked up in the summer.
He said: “I still don’t feel 100 per cent fit but that will only come with games. The more games I play the better I will get.
“With Stephen Hughes and Richard Taundry fit and everyone else fit the manager has got a lot of players to pick from and that can only be for the good of the team.”
Mattis joined the universal praise of the Saddlers’ performance on Saturday and believes the team always had the winning mentality.
He added: “If you are going to do well in any league you have got to have that desire and passion before anything.
“Saturday proved we have got it.”
