I think the national team should always be shown on terrestrial TV and so available to everyone - even if its delayed highlights, but to sell it to a small broadcaster like Satanta was (IMO) wrong.

What would happen if England reached a final and the tournament was unavailable to most fans on TV - is this the worst example of money being everything in football ??

yes everyone should have the chance to watch ENGLAND’S matches on non SKY / CABLE television, it’s the national team and should be availiable to THE NATION!!

YES..it should happy,we are being ripped off by all the others,i have the full sky package and then find out satanta got the england games so i had to join them at the last minute so i could see the match and wednesdays game.then theres the boxing i have followed amir khans career on tv watching all hes fights and now you have to pay 14.99 to watch hes latest fight, its all one big rip off to keep getting money out of people its a total disgrace…even tho im a millianre i aint paying it….OOOOOOOOOOOOH NO..

I have to say it appears that the BBC’s motivation to make a bid for these games is lacking-I no we have lost the Test Cricket to Sky who can promote the game world-wide. The cost of a basic Sky package is about £50.00 amonth to include all sport but you can say that fee allows you to overdose on football-The BBC sevices the peoples needs and it seem that surely they should show the England Games. With Sentana having the deal then surely the audience to the live game is limited we have to wait for the Highlights-Yes we should not be forced to pay extra to watch the National Side but television seem happy to promote cheap shows to save on funds–Football takes a secondary or even forgotten line by the BBC Network in favour of Europe-Club Footbaall——-In other words you can watch live if you pay and sometimes that fee clashes with what you have to pay to watch your local side–Good Question–Happy Baggey–Keep our Dreams Alive–Crazey Dave

The answer is no, because terrestrial TV will be gone in a few years.

Not sure about this Setanta tho, although it’s a lot better than having to put up with Motson and Lawro chatting cr4p!

Personally, i’d have it on sky sports. Can’t beat Tyler & Gray.

  12. finchy - wolves said:

yes it should be its a joke that even if you have sky now setanta have entered and you are expected to pay more money!!!!! BBC SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHTS TO ALL ENGLAND GAMES!!!!!!!

Nice question happy and glad to see you’re using the comments board productively unlike some of your WBA supporting compatriots - mentioning no names!

In answer to the question - Absolutely!

And not only should the game be played on terrestrial television it should be broadcast on the BBC so that we can all enjoy a good debate with messers lineker, hanson and lawrence. The fact that the national games are televised on pay-per-view (Setanta and Sky) is a disgrace.

I know no-one who saw the game (surprising as we’re all beer swilling students) and i feel that this has removed a large subject with potential for banter and discussion! I mean 2-0 against andorra??? come on! our five-a-side team could have competed more convincingly - however as i stated i didn’t see the game so they could have been absolutely outstanding and been prevented from scoring by the athletisicm of the andorran goalkeeper - alas i douubt this was the case though.

The sooner people stop purchasing sky and setanta the quicker the games will return to terrestrial - and even should those companies mentioned previously purchase the rites to these games they should not enjoy exclusivity and the game should still be made available to the average joe such as myself!

To wolves fans everywhere - we are top of the league say we are top of the league!

  14. mouthbreather said:

yeah, and i think that was the general concensus from the crowd at the game too :D

Found out that Sky had shares in Satanta so if the landlord wants to show the games in the pub it costs over £800 + the VAT a month to subscribe on top of what Sky charge!

I also have the SKY sports package but I refuse to pay extra above this to watch a game i honestly believe should be free to all football fans.

Wolvesmod 11 raises another point - when analogue TV (which is proven to better than digital) is taken off air will TV become a pastimes for the well off ?

I can’t see many pensioners upgrading their tellys and buying set top boxes - plus whats the betting that once they have this control EVERY decent event or programme will then be PPV ??

Why haven’t Sky reduced their charges now they don’t show England? All very well moving the games to another provider who wants our money but we still pay Sky the same amount to see less games! ………Go Figure?

Where were the highlights shown? Not even a ten minute slot, just stills on terestrial TV!
Govt should step in on this one…..ALL ENGLAND GAMES SHOULD BE BE SHOWN OR AT THE VERY LEAST HIGHLIGHTS SHOWN ON TERESTIAL TV!

Is there anyone out there that actually the game?

No wonder the players aren’t bothered when no one is watching them…….

The circumstances we now find ourselves in will automatically answer the club ‘v’ country question…….club every time….cos we can’t follow country anymore! WHAT A SHAME!

  28. Eddie Wolf said:

Although I dont agree with the broadcast on Setanta, purley as its subscription figures are lower than Sky, I dont think that necessarily means the BBC must show them. Sky showing these games would be best!

  29. Woking88 said:

I am not paying for any Sky or other sports package as they seem to occasionally have something on that I want to see, but mostly stuff I couldn’t give a fig about. So, if it’s not on Sky down the pub, I won’t be watching it - which means that I won’t be watching the ads either!! Are you listening Setanta and buck up your ideas Sky Sports!!!!!!

When I go to Charlton this saturday,I will have 2 tickets, one for myself & one complimentary for my carer.I can do the same for England games at Wembley, one for me,one free for my carer.
Unless things have changed,if I were to make the 360 mile round trip to Molineux to see a “Home” game,I would have to pay for tickets for myself & my carer.
Now you may be wondering why I don’t go to many home games…..

I can understand sky etc getting the rights to the money driven premiership, especially when you take into account the ridiculous figures floating about. But, the national team should be freely available to the nation.
Its one thing not being available live, but there weren’t even any highlights on after, which was disgusting.
With a combination of crap football and setanta buying the rights, the england team is in serious danger of being alienated from the fans.

  35. Fan_Rich_Wolves said:

I think its a joke that we sould pay to watch England. Thats what we pay our tv licence for.

Just in case you weren’t aware.

Setanta now have ” exclusive ” rights for the next 4 years to show ALL of England’s home friendlies. They will also show ALL of Englands away 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

    It get’s worse…..

They will also show 46 live premier games.

    It get’s worse…

They also have ” Exclusive ” rights for 25 FA Cup games including 2 quarters and one semi final.

    ALL

Should the England team be picked without inclusion of players from Liverpool & Man Utd players ??

My reason behind this is Jamie Carragher’s Book stating that he put Liverpool way before England & the fact…. I quote “could never get excited about playing for England” !!!!!!!!!

After this & hearing numerous radio phone-in’s & coverage in the media, It seems that the Scouse population beleive they are a nation un-too themselves !!!

No problem with that & if this is the case then let them have a nation to themselves in the North West…. Crime Stats would halve overnight….

Personally I would like to know that every player that is putting on the National jersey is 100% wanting to give blood, sweat & tears in the cause of winning !!!!

I also include Man Utd because historically there has been problems with players from this club aswell.

Your thoughts oh learned ones ???????

  45. Torywolf said:

33, No I wasnt wondering, move house mate.

I watched the game on my Setanta package and enjoyed slating the poor performance as normal.

If you cant afford it then tough.

Its a bit like private education/healthcare.

  46. harry s said:

Couldnt care less who wants to watch that rubbish any way?

  47. sussexwolf said:

The BBC should concentrate on quality broadcasting and make programmes that other providers don’t make. When it comes to sport, why should the beeb pay over the odds when it is available on another medium. I had to go out, to our local social club, to watch the match and benifited from the atmosphere that such an exciting game produced!!!

  48. Steve bull stand said:

England matches are rarely more entertaining than watching paint dry so the less opportunity to see the game the better. Hopefully the next contract will go to a more obscure channel than Setanta.

Surely real football fans would rather see a team banging in 4 goals a game with two great wingers bombing down the field. For those interested the next opportunity to see that will be 7:45 at Molineux on Sept 16th.

  49. harry s said:

  50. Tony said:

I have Setanta and was unlucky enough to watch the rubbish and wish that I had not but no one was bothered about this whaen it was on Sky but now because there is a new player in town it is an issue. I do though believe that it should be on normal television if we have to endure boring motor racing and boring wimbledon then it is only fair that England football matches belong on National Telly. talking of the game Is it me or is everyone going over the top about Theo Walcott. Yes he played alright and yes he went past their defenders very easy. But lets remember they were part timers not full internationals. When he beat them which he did a lot the end pass was always very poor and that makes the difference between a scoring opportunity and not. After he was malicously body checked he totally went missing for 30 minutes he needs to toughen up and increase the quality of his finished pass if he is to become an England reguler but at the moment he is no where near ready. Perhaps Capello should speak to Wenger and tell him that he needs to play matches and not sit on the bench to improve his England chances. Not that Wenger would listen since when has he cared about England.

An italian as england manager a disgrace it shouldent be shown at all

  52. Walter Guest said:

I never thought I would agree with a baggie, let alone a happy baggie. Well here goes, national games should be free to air, take a leaf from Autralia’s book where the government stepped in and put in a requirement for national games to be free to air. Not only are Setanta stopped the real fans from watching, but, here in the states the price has gone up by 35 - 50%

  53. burfmiester said:

    51…. Good point !!

That got me thinking to the point I made in 44…

Let’s say all teams in the U.K. Managed by non ENGLISH managers should be null & void from feeding the national side!! LIKE MY STYLE !!!

Forgien managers cannot have the interest of England to heart, in fact the total opposite!!

If it were about the money we wouldn’t be supporting football……
How do you stack up that Sky hasn’t reduced it’s price now they don’t have these England games?
So we now expected to pay Sky and Setanta (Sultana!)……won’t happen in my house. Giving up on boring boring England!
What about U21’s on terestial then????? they look good and play good football, but by the time they get to the seniors the money has take hold! oh yes a whole nother subject I know…….but at least these blogs are creating a stir up!

For as long as it remains law to have a TV Licence to watch TV then ALL England games should be shown on “free” to air channels (weather its BBC1/2, ITV or CHs 4&5)in fact anything that is considered of national interest (wimbledon, Rugby World Cup, Ashes, Grand National, Olympics ..etc…)PPV should be for “specialist” games like premiership etc.. the whole country (well most, but i’ll leave the asylum seeker debate for another time;-) )wants to watch these events and that should come before profiteering everytime!

…and don’t get me started on Jamie Carragher!

What a question! The FA should be looking for more people behing the country not less.

I have setanta but I hate the commentators on there.

Bring it back on to Terrestrial tv!!

  62. E11 Wolf said:

The fact that the rights were sold to Satanta which luckily I have - indicates the contempt the FA have to its fans anyway. All of our great sporting events should be terrestrial.

BIG GAZ - You’re right - the commentators are very much the poor mans John Motsom.

  63. Ian Bateson said:

Yes, it should be shown on BBC. The trouble is that people are paying for Sky and Setanta. They bid for it, so people then pay to watch. If we are not to be ripped off then STOP SUBSCRIBING TO SKY AND SETANTA! If people do this, Sky and Setanta won’t bother bidding big money. We then get to see England games yet again on BBC and ITV. So, Sky and Setanta viewers, get some brains. Sky and Setanta are taking you for mugs and you let them.
