Give me a game, pleads Bednar

Roman BednarAlbion star Roman Bednar today pleaded with manager Tony Mowbray for a Premier League chance and declared: “I know I can score goals”.

The Czech Republic striker is awaiting his first top-flight start after bagging 17 goals for the Baggies last season.

But Bednar says he now feels ready to make a splash in the Premier League and is hoping to force himself into the team against West Ham next Saturday.

He said: “I am sure any of the strikers here can score goals in the Premier League but I am feeling really sharp and hopefully the manager will decide I am ready to play.

“I didn’t have much confidence in pre-season but that happens sometimes with strikers.

“Then I scored a goal against Real Mallorca and my confidence started coming back.

“I scored the penalty against Everton when I came off the bench and then scored two goals for the reserves against Tottenham and I am feeling really confident at the moment.

“If the manager decides to keep me on the bench I can’t change that and I will be patient and wait for my chance.

“But I feel really sharp and I really believe that I can score goals for us in the Premier League.”

Angry

Bednar scored Albion’s final goal of pre-season against Mallorca at The Hawthorns before stepping off the bench a fortnight ago to bag their only goal of the league season so far from the penalty spot against Everton.

But he was an unused substitute in the goalless draw at Bolton on Saturday and he admitted he was frustrated to end the game on the bench.

Bednar said: “I was a little bit angry at the end of the game because I thought I could have gone on and got a goal for us.

“But I think that’s good because it shows that my confidence has come back.”

Bednar is now gearing up to face the Hammers at The Hawthorns next Saturday but Mowbray is facing a wait for news on James Morrison after he was ruled out of Scotland’s World Cup qualifier in Macedonia today.

The Scottish medical staff are still assessing the extent of his knee injury.

ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Iceland.

I agree with him. Mr Miller isn’t doing it and while I personally don’t think any of our strikers are premier class, Roman deserves his chance. Surely he can’t miss from 6 yards as well.

  4. MALTABAGGIE said:

They lack confidence & not much beleif due to pressure thats all. As soon as they score one bloody goal I sure they’ll start scoring for fun.
And please dont say they are not good enough for the premier! i remember Yakubu @ portsmouth if I’m not mistaken he went 12 games without scoring and missing sitters but look at him now … what a difference.

  5. Cyril Randle said:

Miller will come good but he’s only a kid and still learning. Certainly Roman Bednar should get his chance too and maybe a start for both against the Hammers hey?

    3) I take it you didn’t watch the Arsenal game? Back Miller FFS. Bednar will get his chance in the next couple of weeks when we go back to 442.

very clever by TM to not start him as now he is chomping at the bit to get out and score ,i beleive he will be a very good striker and this is what he needed .
Being left out is sometimes a blessing as it keeps everyone eager-so come on TM give the lad his start

  9. Dudley Baggie Boy said:

he is our best striker and is goin to score goals at this level with our a doubt and i wudnt bet against him scoring 10+ this year,
i reckon he will be albions player of the season and get his international return this year

IF (?) Tony Mowbray sticks eith a 4-5-1 formation then logically, from a fans point of view, Roman should be the lone striker.

However should he switch to 4-4-2 there’s room for both Miller and Bednar.

Only time, and results, will prove which formation is the most productive but whatever Mogga’s decision the fact is WE have to start scoring goals and winning matches.

Starting with West Ham next week.

    “Come on you Baggies”

if you were to look at some of the strikers in the prem at mo you’d be saying they’re not good enough. Keane, rooney, adebayor and even anelka are struggling. bednar and miller both need a few games to get upto speed. i rate bednar after seeing what he did to both rangers and celtic, his only problem is a lack of express pace. i think moore might do well next to bednar also, but it all takes time. we must be patient. our football is terrific, we just need to get an ugly goal maybe and then we may settle in front of goal. FOREVER ALBION

After watching the game last week I think Roman should be given a chance to start the game. I swear I could have scored in last weeks game. He can’t do any worse than Miller so give him the chance.

Haven’t seen you on here before but if you’re always as enthusiastic as this we’ll all be getting carried away.
I’m sure Roman will get his chance and when he does he will get goals. I also think Ishmael will come good but he’s learning as he goes ans needs encouragement not snide remarks.

  15. westbromcomeon said:

ToMo as said himself that strikers thrive on confidence, so he should give credit to roman for saying that he’s up for it. Can’t wait to get tex back either as I think that could help too.

We need to change back to the 4-4-2. midfield possession don’t mean s hit if were playing in the championship next year.

  18. Steve-o said:

We need the 4-4-2. without many goals this year we’ll be sure to be playing the likes of blackpool again next year. We need a quality goalscorer if january transfer ain’t too late

I also think that Bednar should be given a chance. I don’t, at the moment, believe that Miller is good enough to play as a lone striker as he appears to be best when playing alongside someone else. Also, I would like to see Slusarski be given a chance. We must start scoring goals before we see a sharp decline in the confidence of the team. To achieve this we must juggle about with the various options at our disposal and Miller has already missed several ’sitters’ which I am convinced Bednar would have scored from.

  21. Fullmoon said:

QUITE TRUE! Miller misses from 6 inches. :)

  22. AVFC POTM said:

Isn’t the highly intelligent quinton baggie going to use his wonderful football brain to judge the team morale by these comments?

  23. The Doctor said:

Miller has done ok - not an easy job playing as lone striker - think some of the criticism is unfair really.

  24. quinton baggie said:

Play Bednar alongside Miller with 4-4-2 line up against the hammers. Bednar has got 3 goals already if you count 2 in the stiffs.

  25. Albion Till I Die said:

Bednar should be played and forget about the 4-5-1, go back to 4-4-2 (just a rather large midfield scramble for who plays

I thought being a real fan was all about believing in your team and believin they’re the best in the world? And I’d rather be prem than championship you moron. Really think you’re going to break into the top 4 this year? Doubt you’ll even get into Europe again pal, you’ll be under achieving and slipping to back to mid table I reckon.

  37. AJ said:

Honestly Villa.Villa. and AVFC POTM, are you that embarrassed to admit you’re dingles? I see neither of you have posted on the Villa pages again! Call yourselves fans!

  38. Cyril Randle said:

No 31. I don’t think you really mean ‘compliment’ as this implies use like “Albion are a brilliant team”. You actually mean ‘complement’ which is to suggest the item is INCOMPLETE and needs something to make it WHOLE, a bit like your brain.

Ageing? Love to know what you base that on seeing as our first team contains only two players over 28! By the way, you comment on grammar and then go and type out the rest of your message like a ten year old on his new Nokia!

Plus part of your sentence says ‘baggie fans are not use to standard english because your use to the rubbish that WBA FC can offer’. Allow me to correct you - your should be you’re!!! Thicko!

    Sure YOU’RE not a dingle?
