Luckless Wolves keeper Matt Murray is playing a waiting game as he awaits the green light to return to training – as George Elokobi prepared to go under the knife.
Murray has now finished a course of injections to reduce swelling in his left knee, after suffering a reaction in his rehabilitation at the start of July to his cruciate ligament injury some 14 months ago.
Now the 27-year-old has to wait for the knee to settle down before returning to full training.
Manager Mick McCarthy said: “He’s finished his course of injections, but he’s having to wait until he can train. He to have more injections and hasn’t trained since. Until it’s all settled down and he’s back training, we won’t know how he is.
“But I’m sure once that’s happened, he’ll be fine.”
McCarthy stressed there was no need for Murray to be rushed.
He said: “Because we’ve got Carl Ikeme too and a minimum of 46 games is a long season, I can take it nice and easy with Matt without pushing him.”
Elokobi prepares to go under the knife next Tuesday, to discover the extent of ligament damage to his right knee, after being seriously injured at Ipswich 12 days ago.
The left-back saw a surgeon last Friday but the damage could not be ascertained because of the swelling.
The 22-year-old is walking without crutches, has no discomfort and is hopeful of a full recovery.
He said: “I see the surgeon on Tuesday for an operation when we’ll find out what’s wrong. But the knee has settled down a lot and I can walk around fine.”
Captain Jody Craddock continues to make progress from his broken foot. The central defender hopes to ditch the special boot to aid his recovery and believes he will be back sooner than the estimated 12 weeks.
He said: “He’ll be fine. I saw him yesterday but it will take as long as it takes. There’s nothing we can do to make that any better.
“If you set 12 weeks as the benchmark and it’s 10, then he’ll be thrilled. If you say 10 and it’s 12, then players are always down.”

Dont rush back lads its a long season and you might be needed during the run in
I worry we will ever see Murray play! Good luck to all our players recovering and lets hope they all play a part in our promotion push!
There were calls yesterday to give up on Murray. Ok he is on our wage bill but I am sure Morgan is not unduly concerned about that. He is our best keeper but we have no concerns as both Wayne and Carl are class acts!
Now we have made what I believe to be very good signings - Friend will be the next excellent spot by the scouts - Craddock and Elokobi need not rush!
GEORGE IS A FIGHTER AND I BET HE IS BACK BEFORE JODY!
DO DO DOO GEORGEY ELOKOBI DO DO DOO GEORGEY ELOKOBI!
Best of luck all the injured players. Especially Matt Murray.. as great as WH is, a fit Matt Murray on form is one of the best keepers in the country.
ps. E&S who said what at the end of the article? Is MM talking about Jody? Or GE? Or is JC talking about GE? Come on!
It pains me to say this, and I sincerely hope I am wrong but I cannot see Matt pulling through this and there may be an early retirement on the cards. It’s a shame for someone who, in my opinion, would have gone on to don the England number 1 shirt. Whatever happens Matt you will always be a true Wolf.
Agree with number 6 that Matt seems destined to never reach the potential we all know he could reach. Wish them all the best on speedy recoveries
With Georges physique its probably a tree surgeon he needs!
Good luck to both George and Matt
i have to agree with you Roz its such a shame
I think if he gets another reaction to the knee he will retire. Whats a shame because he is Twice the Goalkeeper that Wayne is. Hope you recover and stay injury free.
I think if matty murray gets fit, if….! he cannot be denied the no.1 spot look at the goal conceeded against forest he would of come and caught that, i am praying for you mate, the club miss you and i think you can get through this
The guys a permanent crock, the original sicknote. Get rid and replace with someone who is as good as he was. Hennessey is proving a liability.
It’s all going down hill from here. Mick’s won manager of the month.
Whats with all the Hennessey stick? Is 20 cleansheets last season not good enough for you or something? muppets!
12. How do we get rid he has a contract does he not?? Replace him with who exactly?? Oh and the Wales no 1 is now a liability despite holding a record for clean sheets. Im glad most people dont see the world through such a childish, heartless, black and white perspective as you do.
Get well soon Matty!!!!!
GOOD LOOK IN YOUR RECOVERY LADS!!
DON’T RUSH, GET TO 100% SO WE CAN SEE YOU WORK YOUR MAGIC AGAIN AT FULL STRENGTH!!!
MM BARMY ARMY!!!
how can anybody claim hennessey is a liability, he made one mistake so far this season and probly wont make another one. yes matt murray is a great goalkeeper but how can u put hennessey down when he has had one full season and already got into his international team. give the lad a chance to get some experience. a speedy trouble free recovery to all.
The quicker the players are back the betta ! needs as stronger squad 4 this league as possible ! Hopefully Jody cums back soon! I think he or shackell will b the missin peice this season! wolves defence hasnt been playin badly of late but collins is always a danger !
Fighting for places !
always a good thing
Come on the Wolves !!!
A bit of faith in Murray wouldn’t go amiss lads!!! He is a class act and will come back…it’ll just take time.
I have no doubt that he will pull through.
In WH we have another class act.
12-YOU ARE A TIT…..laughing wolf, why are you called that for? is it because everyone is laughin at you for your stupid comments?? forests goal on saturday was a freak goal…what would have happened if he would have punched it 40 yards and set up an attack? would you applaud him for his creativity then?
we have by far the best two goalkeepers in the division in murray and hennessey and a lot of premiership club would love for them two to be on their books,
sorry but i agree wiyh everyone else who has said matt is better than hennesey without a shadow of doubt matt would have been england no1 had it not been for his injuries infact in the play offs we would not of lost at mol against themlot had matt been in goal i have thought wayne a very lucky goalkeeper but some would say you have to make your own luck i hope matt does get through this injury and helps us back to top flight football also rember hennesey/20 clean sheets came in the most defence minded wolves team in recent history because we had ageing slow centre backs so midfield also played dfensively hence 20 clean sheets.but not many goals goals scored im not knocking hennesey but he should command his area better but great start and well done so far keep it up in mick we trust
dissapointed in all the moaners.
time to forget last season and concentrate on this one. the players we have is all we can rely on, and as fans they need to rely on us. constructive critisism is needed not put me downs.
we all know injuries can hamper and finish of many a good career and that is a huge shame for whoever it involves.
but for the players on the pitch instead of telling them they are not as good as so and so tell them why maybe then serious discussions can begin.
in the end everyone is entitled to an opinion but lets please cut out all the back stabbing and moaning.
all we need to do is support our players, healthy or injured.
Wayne Hennessey a liability, what’s wrong with you people?
Matty would have come and claimed the one against Forest? We won 5-1!!!!!!!!!!
I hope and pray Matt Murray gets through this, but why use this article as an excuse to attack a player who was absolutely fantastic last season and has done very little wrong this?
This really does take it to new limits, 11 & 12 you are an embarrasment.
Good luck to all the lads in their rehabilitation.
good luck lads…get beta soon…
Why can`t people take genuine, constructive criticism of wolves players?
Hennessey`s not up to it, end of story.
I make my living by analysing investments and acting upon them and advising others, and make a fortune in the process so my opinion must count for something.
why cant you fickle people be glad were we are get behind the lads give them all the support you can everybody makes mistakes buy getting on there backs and slagging them off that is no help or confidence boost at all keep your booing and geering for the opposition you are supposed to support them stand proud and shout for your team
Wayne Hennessey has the potential to be a better Keeper than Matt Murray when you consider their respective ages. Wayne con only get better, sadly Matt is unlikely to improve further even if he does get fit and then stay fit. As a club we are in a great position in the Keeping department so let’s not put Matt under pressure. May the best man win!
Keep your chin up Matt.
Yeah, Murray was a good keeper before his injuries, but maybe the 14 months off has affected his form.
Which is a shame really, he was a quality keeper, lets hope he still is.
As much as i like Murray i can’t see him ever fulfilling his potential. Ability wise, hes in the top 5 of the premiership but its almost as though his body can’t take the rigors of professional football. I”ll never forget his performance at Cardiff as long as i live. He seems a geniunely nice bloke, compared to low life scumbags like Joey Barton anyway and deserves better. I guess at some point, the club will have to decide his future and for me, its looking grim really. Such a shame.
Got to start by wishing all the injured players a speedy recovery. I agree Murray is/was a great keeper….but he even if fit he wouldn’t get back in the team. Hennessey is top drawer and would be first choice even if Matt is fit. Matt is 27 and injury prone, Wayne is 21 and never misses a game. I’d personally thank Murray for great service, but sell him.
I honestly believe we wont see much more of Matt Murray,..as I think the size of his physique is just naturally too big and heavy for a goalkeeper, and in that it will be one injury after another as it has been so far,… I hope im wrong though.
Mick don’t want to rush Matt back into action but England will when he returns
Said it before, I’ll say it again. No room for sentiment in football, Murray is a crock, get rid, and concentrate on the rest
Jody………. I hope you made sure the special boot was 1/2 inch higher than the other, or should it be 1/2 inch lower, I forget which it should be. Help me out here please someone.
guys, please dont believe everything u read, posts 12 and 25 are from a boggie just tryin to stir, post 11 is the real wolfie and all he is dooin is offerin his opinion matt is the better keeper, which he is, henno is only young and still learning, think how good he will be with a few more years
Why does every one insist on coming on here and bashing WH? Again, 20 clean sheets isn’t just down to a defence minded team, it takes a bloody good keeper to play a key part. Plus i dont think Stockport were that defensive minded when he broke the league record.
The Notts Forest game was a freak goal, however i dont see anyone questioning Stearmans role in the goal? What about the 10 other players that let the ball get that far???
As for MM, I agree with all those that live in the past, yes he had a fantastic game at Cardiff and made some excellent saves, but Englands No 1??? Are you seriously suggesting that he would ever be better then the likes of foster, green and James….I dont think so….the guy is injury prone and i bet he isn’t minding taking home his wage each week while the rest of the lads slog away for the club? he is draining the clubs resources and i think enough is enough….we shouldnt continue to pay his medical bills.
