Hit Grease in return to big screen

From September 19, selected cinemas around the country will be showing the hit musical, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as American high school sweethearts who can never seem to fit their relationship in with their friends.

Film fans have been speaking of their excitement on internet forums about their hopes the movie will be shown in their home towns. Bosses at Cineworld in Wolverhampton today said they were hoping to get the film but that schedules had not yet been confirmed.

Showcase, which has cinemas in Walsall and Dudley, is also hoping to screen the 70s blockbuster.

The quintessential high school musical is set in 1958 and follows the lovelife of Danny Zuko, played by Travolta, and wholesome Australian girlfriend Sandy, Newton-John, who are reunited after a summer fling when it turns out they both go to Rydell High School. The film features the hits Greased Lightning, Summer Nights and You’re The One That I Want. The movie’s soundtrack played a huge part in the film’s cultural phenomenon and reached number one around the world.

Although Travolta was already famous from the hit movie Saturday Night Fever, Grease catapulted him to super stardom. Newton-John also went on to further pop chart success.

The film, based on Jim Jacobs’ and Warren Casey’s Broadway musical, was originally released on June 16, 1978.

The six million dollar picture was a worldwide smash and grossed more than 400 million dollars at the box-office at the time of its release. It also won five Golden Globe Awards.
