Could have, would have, should have

848ryan-donk.jpgCould have, would have, and should have.I will begin with an apology for the length of this blog, however we have so much to discuss, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.

It is 12.21am Tuesday 2nd September, and is has been a busy evening. The madness that is the transfer window has now closed firmly until January and love them or loathe them they do create excitement among fans.

The title of this blog may seem some what confusing, allow me to begin.

Bolton away, Could have been our first win of the season. Plenty of possession witnessed us create a number of very good opportunities to score, but failed. Big Ish being the culprit of spurning more than one goal scoring opportunity.

Bolton away, Would have been our second win of the season had we invested in a striker who is proven at this level, with Everton being our first.

Since the end of last season our strike force has lost Kevin Phillips (our top goal scorer) and recruited eerrrm, nobody, (yes I know Bednar and Moore have signed permanently but they were both a part of last seasons squad). So in fact, although we are now in the position of trying to bridge the mighty Championship to Premier League gap, we now have a weakened strike force compared to last season.

We have had all summer, and we quite simply Should have signed a striker.

I don’t know about you guys and girls but I just kept thinking surely he knows what we all know, we need another blooming striker!! Even as I sat and watched the last few hours unfold of the transfer window I still expected to see us sign someone.

It is such a shame because I believe we have assembled a fantastic squad of players, but with only Miller, Bednar, Moore, and oh please no Beattie to call on, I fear injuries and any loss of form will leave us seriously short.

It is the first time I have found myself questioning Tony Mowbray, for someone who I regard as the best Albion manager of my adult life I cant help feeling we have just missed an opportunity. The squad in every other aspect looks capable of surviving in England’s top division and I just hope that this gamble pays off and our current strikers step up to the plate.

Ok rant over, now onto the positive news I have. If any of you remember I have a good friend who works in the Dutch media who when we signed Zuiverloon gave me the low down. Well guess what, yep I rang Karl again, and since the news broke of us signing two more players from the Dutch top flight I think he had been waiting for my call his initial response was, “we didn’t speak this often when I lived in England”.

Anyway here is his low down on Olsson.

“Very physical, very strong in the air and can handle the most bully boy of strikers. He has a huge presence and is definitely what you would call a no nonsense defender. I would expect him to suit the English game, also expect some fist pumping and arm waving as he gets quite animated at times. His biggest criticism is he is a bad loser and often when up against it loses his rag”.

Well Karl don’t we all!!

I wanted to find out more about Olsson but Karl couldn’t wait to talk about Donk, he may have a strange name but Karl is a firm admirer.

“Firstly, I am staggered West Brom managed to sneak this under the radar of some big clubs. Only 22, again like Olsson is huge physically, and is seen as a future star of the Holland first team. His biggest quality is being able to man mark; he has everything other than vast experience. He is not slow, excellent in the air, brilliant tackler, and can play a bit too. It is the reason why many people expected him to go to Barcelona and then be loaned out, which was muted for a number of months”.

I thanked Karl for his expert knowledge and mentioned how well Zuiverloon had played in his first two games, all he said was “I told you so, and if Zuiverloon has done ok, I am sure both Olsson and definitely Donk will be future stars”.

Sorry for the length of the blog, it is now 1am and I am off to bed, disappointed with not signing a striker, but still confident of us having a good season. Yaaawwwnn, why can’t they close the transfer window at 8pm?????

Yes we need a striker. We had a 10m bid accepted from Barca for Eidur Gudjohnson but didn’t do it in time and he was willing do drop his salary. We will go back to 442 when our players gel. WE WILL SIGN A STRIKER IN JANUARY!

  4. BoingBoing666 said:

im rather dissapointed we didnt bag any striker but on the positive spin of things if TM saw it as a MUST have then he would have made it priority. Despite Trejo we havent been solidly linked with any striker in pre-season have we?
With Bednar, Miller, Beattie and Moore(who I damn well hope comes to match his transfer fee)
I will look forward to seeing how they fare, Miller WILL score eventually, much as 10,000 monkeys on typewriters will write the complete works of Shakespeare given the time, hopefully the goal he gets sets off a trail.
After his impressive Hughes-style entrances could Bednar be our super-sub this season?
Onto Luke Moore…a player doesnt score a hat trick in the Premiership on pure luck, he must have something inside of him, hopefully TM has a shovel to unearth it since it fell away during his barren spell at Villa.

We now have a solid defense in place and many midfield options which means we should be able to play most home games with a 4-4-2. If we continue to play 4-5-1 and Miller doesn’t find his form, I struggle to see where the goals are gonna come from.

Excellent blog Jarrod. Think you’ve probably summed up how each and every one of you Baggies must feel right now. Not saying that TM has suddenly become a bad manager over night cos that doesn’t happen, however I think he has made a serious misjudgement in not getting at least one new striker on you books. I know that he’s gone now and you have to move on but you must regret the club not offering KP that extra year ? I just hope the January transfer window isn’t too late for you. Good luck my friends.

The transfer window only benefits 2 types of club:-

    1) Money no object
    2) Wanting to offload fring players.

Lets look at it logically & this is how I have been lead to believe it went last night. We were in for another 2 players definately, 1 striker & 1 attacking midfield. With the striker, the club selling the man held right up to the last hour & then upt the asking price with a “no meet no deal” tag…. With the midfielder it was the player asking for more than WBA are willing to give on a personnal level.

These players will not be named as the aim is to get them in during the less commercially agressive January transfer window.

Mr M’s job now is to get us up to a possition that will attract players to the club as a premiership club staying in the premiership. This will happen as I believe very strongly that we have a squad at the club worthy of the premiership. They now have to & will show this.

Stoke & Hull for instance have bought Quantity rather than Quality. The players purchased, In my opinion, are fringe players & players that have previously flopped in the Premiership.

WBA will always put the club first & never ever jepordise its future. I for one like this fact & feel that the “no player is bigger than the club” mentallity has put WBA back in the premiership & the best shape possible to stay were we belong.

As for strikers, we are strong enough to get goals. Bednar, Moore, Miller, Valero just to name a few with a wonderful midfield supporting staff.

Have faith & watch us climb. Opta stats put us 5 from bottom & at this stage of the season that is by far the best yard stick rather than the table.

I’m sure the club recognise the need for a striker, I must admit, I’m very frustrated that we didn’t get one. Did we try and fail? or is the club really satisfied with what we have?

Mobray is a God, but is blind to the fact that miller is not and will not be a premier striker or McDonald; we must have signed every defender up for grabs.
Last year we scored for fun and couldn’t defend, how different this season will be, yes we play fantastic football but if we can’t score, we know where we will end up.

    yep good blog jarrod,
as bednar notched 2 in last nights reserves game i would be gob smacked if T.M. does not start with him and miller on saturday as the three goals we have scored have all come from his boots.
I just hope that the reason was funds as to why we couldnt land anybody and not that they believe we dont need another forward.
    fingers crossed for the weekend.

Ronaldo (the real one not the “wannabe Real” one!) is available on a free still.

So Emile Mpenza who Plymouth are supposed to be looking at bringing in.

And, what about “The Chinaman” (Alvaro Recoba’s nickname)?

Even though the window is shut - I don’t believe it’s the last transfer we’ll witness this year… there’s plenty of free agents out there.

Idiotic blog if you ask me. Signing another striker is easy. Signing one to take us to the next level is difficult and obviously could not be done. Stop questioning the Manager that won us our first title in 80+ years - he knows a little more about football than you.

I would say you got it spot on we have less fire power now and now playing in the top flight. So if miller gets a knock we have nobody and miller is yet to prove himself at this level. I must say im very down heartend today. All excitement and faith has vanished very quickly. Obviously this will come back in time but after spending all my valuable and precious time watching skysports repeat the same berbatov story every 2 mins all night i sat in hope of a breaking news story about west brom sign 5mill striker. I have to say the board this window have nearly done a good job and really tried to enable west brom to have the resources to finally establish the club in the premier. We have a good manager and a nearly good squad. Is it the board holding back finances or TM + scouts + director of footy that didnt have the required knowledge to find a decent striker who we could afford in the WORLD! They have had all summer to get a short list of at least 10 strikers im sure in ranked order of preference. I will seariously question TM if he looks at his squad thism orning and thinks we have done a good job we will be fine. If he does think that then the premiership will wake him up and show he has a lot to learn. This is isnt scotland. But in Mowbray we have faith and maybe the quality of striker we could sign would not be as good as the one we could get if we saved that money and ploughed it into some top striker with high wages on loan.
Can anyone cheer me up this morning and enlighten me onto what west brom were thinking last night or any reasons why after 3 games we can see we could stay up if we get a striker in and havnt??

I HATE to be negative regarding the Albion, but I think that the lack of a striker signing will send us down, unless with all these midfielders and defenders signings we are aiming to make enough points from 0-0 draws.

I just pray the first win will be VERY soon and that goals come from open play. THAT’S what we excelled in before and we have the defensive and midfield skills to support it. At home we shall meet ‘The Everton Factor’ more than not, with nine outfielders behind the ball and then picking us off where they can. But make no mistake, there won’t be many teams who will shred us once this new talent gels together. Quality rins through the squad so chances will be made. Pray for the first win. THEN we’ll see where we’re going.

It’s like corporal Jones. Always a bit behind. Last year the defence needed strengthening in January, but we bought strikers. In the summer we catch up with the defence, but fail to recognise the need to get good strikers. Perhaps this will be addressed in January, but it could be too late by then.

On another note: on Donk’s website (translated by Google) under training it says “Pastries”. Another John Hartson? Actually reading on it appears he’s a trained pastry chef.

  22. shropshirebaggie said:

A lot of sense in your blog and from what i’ve read(and seen with Zuiverloon) the Dutch buys sound solid enough. The lack of a striker(one down from last season) is a worry, i think Miller & Bednar will be OK in their different ways - 2 up front at home tho plse Tone? The real problem is at the moment thats it. Beattie& Moore dont seem good enough (they struggled last season!) So 1 injury and then what? I do have ultimate faith in TM tho, perhaps he didnt want to be bullied into rash signings? Keep the faith

Good blog and yes we do need a striker or two but not any old striker - if TM and JP can’t find someone better than what we’ve got they ain’t going to waste money on some fringe player - this is demonstrated in the quality of the recent players signed eg z’loon, donk, valero etc. I believe we need to keep calm and the results will come. Remember it’s a pretty new lignup - the players are getting used to one another. The frailties in defence seem to be diminishing and the signing of Donk and Olson will improve things further - we’ve got some smashing midfielders now and when Tex comes back it will be even better. Bednar is my man up front - i think he can hold the ball better and will score more goals than Miller. Get to Jan and we can sign someone decent. TM is the best thing that happened to to Baggies in 50 years - mark my words.

  27. Terry Wills. said:

YES very disappointing and unless our ’strikers’ (in the loosest sense of the word!) fail to improve we can anticipate a VERY long hard season.

What would help would be to see a ‘few’goals from the surfeit of midfield players PLUS a chance to see if Tony Mowbray’s faith in Luke Moore is warranted.

If he feels this is the case then give him his chance, and if he fails to live up to Moggas’ judgement with the likes of McDonald, Beattie sitting on the bench match after match, we ARE in trouble.

Come on Tony let’s see a 4-4-2 formation in home games, Miller (and in particular)Bednar, and, if for away games, you feel it necessary to adopt a 4-5-1 line up for away games we’ll bow to your superior judgement.

Let’s face it as i keep saying “If you don’t score goals you don’t win matches” and at the moment we do not look like doing just that.

Possesion football, silky passing, and dominating games as against Everton and Bolton counts for nowt unless the end product actually wins games.

BUT WE’LL CONTINUE TO LIVE IN HOPE!

    “Come on you Baggies”

PS…To the Wolves fans who are no doubt revelling in this (!?) well done on the win against Forest. You should go up and appear to be following the Baggies philosophy of last season..”IF we score more goals than the opposition we’ll win more games than we lose”.

But hey isn’t that where we came in regarding the current malaise at the Hawthorns?!

  30. Baggiebob said:

Yes, an additional striker is needed. And like many I sat for hours only to be disappointed. People talk about the fact the Albion wasn’t linked to any strikers apart from Trejo, but I believe this is selling the club short. Over the last few years it’s policy to avoid leaks and not to make public statements, however, reading between the lines I believe at least half a dozen enquiries and bids were made for strikers.

Some talk was generated by agents and press with regards want-a-way strikers who would’ve added little to the squad and Mowbray isn’t into panic buying. I believe the club should’ve issued a brief statement for PR sake saying how hard they had tried to deliver.

Good blog Jarrod. For what it’s worth, here’s my view on the positives and negatives.

Negatives - We do not have a Prem strikeforce, injuries and/or suspensions up front will cause us big problems as we don’t have the strength in depth, 4-5-1 is providing the ammo but not the assassin, Miller’s confidence will by ebbing away and dropping him will make matters worse; Brunt’s performances so far

Positives - Our weaknesses from last year (GK and defence) have been resolved; with the exception of the first 15 mins of the season we have held our own or better against two of the top five and a team with a style we historically struggle against; Kim looks the player TM said he would be in the Prem; Tex will be back soon; Zuvy looks absolute quality; we’ve signed top flight players instead of good CCC players (that would be planning for next season in the CCC in my opinion); we haven’t penny pinched; most of the midfielders we have signed are attack minded and can play in the ’supportting the lone striker’ role; we haven’t shipped players out without having a replacement in first (this is a huge one for me and a mistake we made every other window)

On balance, we’re not that bad off. Yes I’m disappointted that we didn’t strngthen up front, as I’m sure TM is, but as long as we aren’t out of it by Jan (don’t think we will be) we can bring a couple more in and ship a couple out. The key will be to get them at the beginning of Jan instead of at the end as we have at least 5 games in Jan, and that means getting agreements in place in December. We won’t score lots of goals this year, but we won’t concede lots either - results may be a little Megsonesque but the football won’t be.

Keep believing guys. I’d rather have bought what we have than what Stoke got yesterday. And once the strikers start getting goals and get that monkey off their back, we’ve got enough to stay up (just). Bring on the Hammers!

  36. Happy_baggie said:

If I get the gist of the mood on here - it appears that evryone thinks Kevin Phillips would have guaranteed survival - if he was still with us everything would be rosey…. Well i disagree totally.

Yes we want more options up front, and yes its a bit thin on numbers…. but I still have faith in Miller, Bednar, Moore and who knows, maybe even some of the fringe players up front.

I don’t think Nugent is better than Miller or Bednar - so he would have been another bench player - a REAL top draw forward was always going to be nigh on impossible to bring in now.

If the fans think this squad lacks goals then they have very short memories - we have about 6 first teamers who will score regularly this season - not just forwards.

Of course TM has tried to bring in a new forward - but it wasn’t as urgent as making sure we were sound at the back - and we look rock solid.

The underlying feeling of woe on here is baffling to me - yes we will struggle - we were always going to this season, but I think we have the squad capable of getting the points we need to be safe - and if we need goals come January, then we can look at it then.

I’m Still LOVIN IT - keep the faith !!!!

Big mistake not signing a striker, if you don’t score goals soon it won’t matter who you sign in January it will be too late. If you look like relegation certainties then, what decent striker would come anyway?
There are similarities with our Prem Season. You have had at least two decent performances, maybe two and a half but only have one point to show for your efforts. I could tell you even now how we should have won about thirty of our games but the fact is we didn’t. It is obvious I know but you need a win fast.

Morning malvern - thats an unusually negative, and inaccurate post from you my friend…

Firstly, not bringing in a new striker wasn’t “a mistake” - I’m sure we tried, but sometimes these things don’t happen.

Secondly - players WILL come here - even if only to play in the prem, or for the money… if wigan and fulham can do it then so can we.

Finally - we have spent 20 million pounds this season - where are the similarities with wolves season in the prem ?? We are building a squad - we are bedding in players, and we have quality throughtout the club - I think its a bit early to be writing us off.

Oh, and well done on being top scorers after 4 games - if you are still there after 40+ games then we will see you next season !!

    Let’s be positive.
We still scored over 70 goals excluding Phillips and Gera last season.
The options now available in defence and midfield look to be the best in years and hopefully this season opposition attacks won’t be allowed the space as in previous seasons.
Remember Colchester and Leicester last season.
With greater strength in mid field TM should be confident of playing 2 strikers up front at home.
We shall know more after the West Ham game,a game we do need to win and I belive are capable.
One other point;strange that Pele,Martis,Slusarski etc.are still on the payroll.

I am all for sticking up and backing your team but bednar, moore, morrison, mc donald, ish, koren, robinson etc are not premier players. gera was your outstanding player and phillips your goalscorer, you are now playing mc donald and beattie upfront who with the greatest of respect were both sent out on loan last season which means you have taken a step up to the prem with a weaker strike force!

We were not the only team not to get done what we wanted or required! Everton,Bolton,Stoke ( Other than some championship players) and significantly Hull, all faied to do what they wanted.
I think Hull missing out on Campbell and ending up with Cousin will be a big blow to them.
There are not many teams in this division where i would rather have Miller,Roman,Moore - But Hull’s Cousin,King,Folan are def one!

SOTV - From what i saw you were just following news threads and also being a bit creative. I refuse to believe Gudjohnson and £10M mate.
He will not fit into our £20k salary cap, even with a drop, and Mogga has said time and again, he wouldnt distabalize the changing room with one big name charlie.

As expected, the lack of a striker signing has brought out the ‘dismal Jimmys.’ Bet they can’t wait to get on the players backs at the next game if we don’t score early on. The reverse side is that it’s encouraging to see how many positive posts there are. Excellent post from SuperBobbyT except that calling Jarrod’s blog idiotic is a bit harsh, more the result of disappointment after many of the ridiculous names that were being bandied about.
I find it hard to understand the ones who say ‘I trust TM and then proceed to knock his judgement.
‘Could, would, should.’ Could we have brought in a big name striker and the wages he would have demanded? I doubt it. Would TM settle for an aging name on his way down? Definitely not. Should we have brought in some strikers who are no better than we already have to satisfy the vocal minority? I’m glad we didn’t.
We have Bednar and I’m confident that he will become a very good Prem striker. Luke Moore just needs a couple of goals and a section of the crowd that isn’t willing him to make a mistake. Miller who struggles to score against a packed defence but when his heading and hold up play improves will be a very good player. There is also McDonald who, if he carries on improving at the rate he has done will be challenging for a starting place.
The signings we made yesterday will make our defence very solid. This is most important because if you’re not leaking goals then scoring a hatful becomes less urgent.
We’ve lost to Arsenal (3rd last season) by one goal. Everton (5th last season and one of the best defences) after dominating them and drawn at Bolton (a team that’s established and are renowned for giving away little at home.)
Let’s roar the team on for the rest of the season. The midfield has goals in it. Our new giant defenders will pose a greater threat at set pieces and who knows given a chance our strikers may come good. Keep the faith.
PS. Great to see the Wulfies building up their new signings in readiness to knock them down again in a few weeks. Mick’s schizophrenia has taken another turn. Muppet Mick has gone and Merlin is back. How long will it last?

All doom and gloom today. I for one am annoyed we didnt get a striker. No matter what anyone says we do need one. But im sure TM knows that more than anyone but he also new that out of his options of strikers we could actualy sign they would be no different to what we had. Why spend 5mil+ on another striker who is going to just warm the bench - a waste of money. So although im disapointed im going to believe that we tried but ther was just no one available. We might aswell be excited, get behind the team and if anyone can tune our strikers into goal machines it will be the excellent manager and coaches we have now. So come on lads lets talk about the positives now thers nothing we can do till january and lets all talk about the 4-0 win against west ham in 2 weeks haha. miller (2), Valero (1) and moore (1) off the bench.

It could be worse we could be playing forest or other teams. Other clubs would happily swap ther position to be where we are.

Well after our defensive displays against Everton and nearly again with Bolton, TM’s approach to strengthen the back and midfield must be the right option! We have a sensible management team in place that will take us forward.
Dont you think TM knows we have strikers who are not prem quality but he will get on with it.

Your comments only fuel, thankfully, a minority of over expectant albion fans who think we are bigger than we really are.

Enjoy the season. we will stay up and thats not being over expectant its a fact.

Like everyone else I am bitterly disappointed that we didn’t manage to get a quality striker in before the doors slammed shut, it’s been blindingly obvious that we need one. What I don’t understand is why people are suggesting that we didn’t try to recruit someone.

You only have to look at the proposed bids, such as de Sutter and possibly the Icelandic boy from Barcelona to realise that the club where trying to make things happen. I really believe that TM and JP were prepared to get someone in that they rate; unfortunately for whatever reason it didn’t happen. That doesn’t mean that we should lose faith in the best manager the club has had for a long, long time.

It’s also worth comparing the current facilities, squad and coaching staff with what we had here only eight or nine years ago to see how much progress the club has made. JP may not please us all but let’s at least recognise some of the positive contributions that he’s made. OK he’s never going to splash the cash like an Abramovich but then not many clubs that are solvent can.

I still believe that we will be OK come January and by then there will only be one area that requires strengthening. I’m still feeling positive especially once we start to play Bednar and Miller at home. Come on you Baggies.

You know what you lot have managed to depress me beyond comprehension today. GET A GRIP !!! It’s 3 games gone. Yes we haven’t signed a striker, and I don’t think it’s due to lack of trying. Give our guys a chance. The premiership is a new experience for the vast majority of our players, and so far we are holding our own. The goals will come. Yes I agree we need another striker, but we need one with quality to complement the players we already have. What’s the point of spending a fourtune on someone for the sake of panic. Anyone remember Kanu…..yes quality striker but he hardly set the world alight for us.

I think you all need to have a little faith. Quite frankly all I want to do is support the team I love regardless of the results. Granted life is far better when your winning, but that’s easy. Your beining to sound very much like our Gold and Black bretheren, ToMo doesn’t manage to secure a striker so you’ll all pouncing on him without knowing the full facts. It’s all conjecture and as such is a moot point.

As for Kevin Phillips I seriously doubt Mowbray was the one to allow him to leave. I think you’ll find JP negotiates the deals, not the manager. And really I think KP has shown a distinct lack of ambition. He could have had a year with us in the prem and a championship club would still have offered him a 2 year deal at the end of it. I wonder if you’d be happy we kept him if he spent most of the year out becuase of his damaged knee? Also it is not a given that he would have been such a prolific goal scorer in the prem as he was for us in the CCC.

I hate all this negativity! Last season we were calling out for a new defence and we all agree Mowbray’s done more than anyone expected there so please have faith, he knows what he’s doing. He has faith in our strikers – all this negativity from the fans won’t be doing their confidence any good! They’ll come good, I’m sure of it; they know Mowbray’s relying on them and they’ll want to prove him right. With our new defence we won’t be conceding as many goals as last season and with our amazing midfield there’s plenty of goals and chances to come. There’s no point in Mowbray buying someone who’s no better than who we’ve already got – how else can we raise expectations of the other players and get them fighting for their place in the team? There’s no use moaning, nothing will change til Jan so let’s just get behind the team and believe we can do it! (and hope there’s no injuries up front!)

As Happy so wisely says, if you’re still top scorers at the end of the season you should have something to gloat about. Phillips has gone and would not have done it in the prem so get over it. As for a new striker as I posted yesterday a quality proven premiership striker is not within our finances at the moment so anyone we could bring in would be of a similar calibre to what we have so what would have been the point of that. We are only three games in and are notoriously slow starters anyway. There are goals in the team and on Saturday Miller played very well and got into great positions the goals will come. We only need just over a point a game to stay up and we will do that comfortably mark my words. We are in good shap so get behind TM and the team, I can’t believe that some of you lot are criticising him. Get a grip.

Its fair to say and we all know we needed a striker but its over and we havn’t! I firmly believe Bednar will do the job and deserves a go at it. He is big in heart and has a more killer instinct in fromt of the goal. He came second last season to ohillips in our team GS’s and would I am sure have done alot better if he had as many match starts as the miller/Phillips duo.
As for More, he must have something, TM is no mug and has shown to date he will only go with quality, sometimes it takes a while for a player to blossom and I think TM will bring the best out of Moore.

I look at the players in and you have to get excited, we played BW off the park at times on Sat and its a shame we have the Int break of 2 weeks before we get stuck back in.

It is all very well saying TM has bought in unknowns in the past, the past was the fizzy pop league.

We now have to have a real go at the prem, lets play to our strengths at home and away. I would rather get tonked in a few games by the bigger clubs having a go rather than defending. Give the midfield a chance to create for two strikers. We will get more points this way than sitting back and playing tippy tappy football across a 5 man midfield.

Though I remain supportive of TM, I am very surprised at our negative approach to the season so far, hopefully it is a case of the boss having to learn about being a top flight manager, I hope he does so quickly.

As a lifelong Baggies supporter I am very disappointed to hear some of the criticism of a quality manager backed by a fiscally responsible board and chairman who after just 1 1/2 seasons in charge have assembled a young skilled and highly talented squad of players who in the main have Premier quality written all over them - a stock of current and future internationals - the complaining about the lack of signing a “premiership quality” striker extending to some contributors calling Mowbrays talent into question are beyond belief.
Have you forgotten the 10 signings this summer including Carson,an international goalie on the verge of the England squad again and Valero who can play as an out and out striker? Last season all the whining was about the defence - now because we let an aging striker leave the clubwe are suddenly doomed.
Our strikers are young and developing - I think you will find within weeks as they settle to the new pace of the premiership and get used to thier new teammates that the problem will be solved.
Please get behind the team - rebuilding from our sorry state of the past takes five years and the last thing we need is to lose Mowbray due to fan attitude.

I for one cannot believe we have actually attracted the players we have attracted - but please bear in mind our total spending falls well short of what Manchester clubs pay for one player.

Buying quality footballers that add value to what we already have, is a choice that TM & his Team make …

They are perfectly entitled to their choices, and any fan that has seen the results of that Team these past 2 years, cannot fail to be impressed.

It is Tony’s belief that by playing a more expansive game, goals come from all over the pitch, starting at te back.

I can understand how this ideal may grate with the view some hold; that goals will only come from the pointy bit we call the “Forwards”.

FWIW, I have never seen the Baggies play such confident, passing, football 3 games on the trot in the Premiership, and they still are only bedding in! It’s what is called the “Forming” stage of Teams in business.

Players are beginning to show that they believe TM’s approach is a great formula. I’ll be happy when all the rest of the fan base can too.

So, why don’t we now choose to start to show it?

MacDonald and Beattie should have been cleared out, and rumours are rife around me that we had to have Moore as part of the Curtis Davies deal, don’t know if anyone knows anything? Miller is purely Championship and why doesn’t TM give Bednar a chance? Sorry but I think we’re certainies for relegation, we’re already bottom and by January will be too late, just can’t understand it as we’ve brought in some decent players in all other positions, if anyone can enlighten me please do!

The Real Bully…Glad to read your comment as to me changing my mind.

As to me being a depressing so and do, (!) the ‘trouble’ is after watching the Baggies for as long, if not longer than Cyrille Randle (?) one tends to become more realistic than optimistic.

That way if things do go wrong it doesn’t come as a great surprise to a fan who remains eternally optimistic!

Terry (Wills), yes I think you started before I did in 1944, but I’m a bit older. I just wish I was starting out now with Tony Mowbray as manager for the next 20 years. You young uns maybe just don’t know how lucky you are. We’ve had one or two decent leaders in my time, but this bloke gets my vote UNCONDITIONALLY! We came second a few times in the Leagues but NEVER FIRST! There are one or two decent managers trying to copy our style too. I hope MicMac does it for the Wulfies, Heaven knows they deserve it after some of the crap they’ve put up with.

Hugely negative vibe on here at the moment. You have just signed 2 players what is wrong with you?! I know you are desperate need of a striker but some of you extreme optimists seem to think you will get goals from midfield?! Next up is westham and 3 points is a must. Agreed? A draw is no good you need to pick up wins against teams like this, they have huge injury problems like bolton but you are at home. if your bottom at xmas i can see someone coming in for kim, what a player he is!

110 cyril. the next 20 years? mate, if you stay up one of his former clubs will come knocking and he will go. if you are bottom around feb-march he will probably be sacked, thats football!

The goals will come. I rememeber the days of Don Goodman when he first got to the Baggies. Got in great positions and could not hit a barn door at 10 paces. Got loads of stick off the fans. Then the goals started going in and they never stopped. However, if Miller was not gettting into these positions to score then I agree we have a problem. But give the lad a break. He has played 3/4 games at this level and he has got to learn, and he will. Strikers need confidence and that comes from the first goal! Once it goes in the rest will follow. After all he did find the net last season.
Next, the common sense behind 4-5-1, well thats easy. At this level we aint gonna score 3 and 4 goals in a match… if we play 4-4-2 without the crop of new players, then we would have to score this many to cancel out the 3-4 goals we would concede using 4-4-2. That aint going to happen. Lets establish ourselves, get up to speed, learn the tricks of the premier trade and as I and a lot of other expect - grow and grow.
Finally - If memory serves me, did we not start of slow last season as well? lets hope we finish like we did then as well!!!

113 you strted slow last year, but had a win under your belt now infact 4 points and this is the premiership not the championship, love to get you in the fa cup this season!

Having been a Baggie supporter for over 50 years i have seen the good and bad times.

I was unsure of Tony Mowbray on appointment being a great of Bryan Robson but i have to say we are palying football in the style i was brought up on at the Hawthorns and this due to TW.

I agree a striker was a necessity and i feel we have wasted money on Moore but good strikers are hard to come by and are rather expensive to buy also commanding large salaries.

I feel TW is right to play one up front in tough away games where we nearly got the right result at Arsenal but against the weaker sides we have to go 4-4-2 and all home games have to be played that way.

Koren and Kim are class players both capable of scoring goals from midfield and with a tighter defence we should maintain our spot in the Premiership whilst endeavouring to find a suitable replacement for Phillips. Miller has to be one for the future, he simply needs experience and Bednar proved inavaluable last season but may not be good enough for the Prem.

We could dispense with Beattie and Moore in January if anyone will have them.

Continued confidence and the manager’s ability to play tactically will see us through.

Albion supporter for life although now based in the West country.

Sorry. I posted that after reading a lot of negativity on here. Compared to 108 Halesowen, I now realise you’re actually quite chirpy. Know what you mean about supporting us over the years but if you can’t be optimistic now, when can you?

Cant understand y our fans r harpin on bout strikers n the 4-5-1 formation. Firstly miller is more than handful, pace n strength wise, n is gettin on the end of chances, which means hes doin somethin right. Secondly this formation is used by all top teams in european football, plus about 70% of teams in prem, includin the teams weve played so far! WBA4eva!

early days yet millers a trier but he should only get a limited number of chances before bednar gets a crack. the 4-5-1 formation seems to be the in thing but perhaps a change of strategy with miller and bednar may work/moore hopefully westham will be on a downer up the baggies
