Baggies miss a striker boost

millerball22.jpgAlbion today placed their goalscoring faith in Ishmael Miller, Roman Bednar and Luke Moore after transfer deadline day passed without a new striker at The Hawthorns.

The Baggies’ 11th-hour attempts to add extra firepower to Tony Mowbray’s squad met with frustration, leaving the manager with his fingers crossed that his current £6m forward trio can fire his side to Premier League safety.

Baggies officials today said privately that efforts continued until close to last night’s midnight deadline to beef up Mowbray’s forward options.

But they also stressed that Mowbray was unwilling to simply add numbers to his squad despite cash being made available for more signings on the final day of the transfer window.

Mowbray, chairman Jeremy Peace and technical director Dan Ashworth spent much of yesterday making phonecalls attempting to force through a deal for one of several strikers on their list.

But they left shortly before midnight when it became clear they would not land any of their preferred targets.

Oscar Trejo of Real Mallorca remained at the top of the list but it was clear early on that a deal could not be done yesterday.

Albion also had a enquiry rebuffed for Belgian striker Tom De Sutter.  A number of alternative signings became available, but all were turned down by Mowbray.

It left Dutch defender Ryan Donk, aged 22, as the Baggies’ only signing on the final day of summer business. The AZ Alkmaar defender completed the formalities of his season-long loan deal yesterday afternoon and Albion have also secured an option to buy the Holland under-21 international next summer.

Donk’s arrival along with that of Swedish defender Jonas Olsson from NEC Nijmegen on Sunday opened the door for Neil Clement to end his eight-year stay.

But despite strong interest  from Hull, the former Chelsea man did not get close to a move.

I am going to be both positive and negative in what I am about to post. On one hand I agree with TM there is no point in just adding numbers to the squad if what we can’t attract for the money we have available isn’t any better than what we already have. I think most level headed supporters would agree with this sentiment also. On the other hand I’ve been left scratching my head on as to why we left it until late on the 1st September on transfer deadline day to push through a deal. Didn’t we know weeks, months ago that we neede our striking options beefing up with the departure of KP weeks even months ago?. I must say that the signings we have made are quite exciting and posess the quality we will need to compete in this division. If Donk is half as good as his mate Zuuvi then we have two top class defenders on our hands. Valero looks like a top player and Kim will undoubtable chip in with some much needed goals from midfield. I am going to stay as positive as I can because we have the makings of a very good team and I believe we will stay up. After mulling things over this morning I’m with TM and 100% behind him, after all whats the point in bringing in a striker for the sake of it if it doesn’t represent the right player with the right quality. We’ll be ok in Mowbray we trust!!!!

Keep the faith, get behind the lads, Boing Boing!!!!

As many others have already said, we do clearly need at least one more striker. Regardless of whether Miller, Bednar & Moore are in or out of form, you can’t get away with only three strikers at this level, due to injuries & suspensions etc.
Whilst I agree with not being pushed into a panic buy of an average player at the last minute at an inflated price (there were a few of those around yesterday), I’m still very disappointed that somewhere between the end of last season and last night at midnight, we couldn’t manage to add to our strike force. We are competing at a much higher level with fewer options than we had last season and that can’t be right.

I think whats more worrying for Albion is that Stoke and Hull are already off the mark with a win and have both added some real quality to their squads. I wouldnt be surprised if you have gone from 3rd favourites for relegation to favourites overnight.
Still, you now have a decent defence and midfield so who knows?

    4) Only football league sides can make loan signings over the next 7 days, so we’re stuck with what we’ve got.

I suppose we’ve got to hope that Roman Bednar can find the form that we saw during mid-season last year. We’ve had problems making the ball stick in the final third but Roman’s obviously more equipped for that than Miller, and Miller is obviously better playing with someone.

Lets hope that, certainly at home, we go back to what we’re good at and attacking teams. I still think we can create chances and score goals playing 4-4-2.

These platers wouldn’t get in our team. How on earth can people be writing uys off after 3 games? Stoke’s strikers are probably better than ours but I wouldn’t want to swap any of the rest of their squad for ours. Hull have brought in Cousins but he’s only played in Scotland, which isn’t really a good yardstick. Hope we are playing our derby in the prem next season.
Many of our own fans seem to think that it only occured to TM and JP to go out and buy a striker yesterday. This is the reality of modern football, players agents and clubs hold out until the last minute for the best deal and they hold all the cards.

A proven striker would have been nice but they’re few and far between unless you’re willing to invest silly amounts and if Mowbray didn’t fancy anyone out there, that’s good enough for me. We’re going to be involved in a lot of close games this season because our defense and midfield is too good to just get rolled over like Hull were on Saturday against Wigan and with a bit of luck we’ll win more than we lose. Good enough for me although, like many of you, I think he should have kept KP for his experience both on the field and in the dressing room and there was plenty of time before the deadline to work at getting a forward in. Players will need time to settle in but the West Ham game will give us a fair idea of how things are going.
I would like to make one major point. If we are going to ‘get behind’ our forwards, this means putting ALL our doubts and prejudices about Moore, Sherjill Mac, Bednar and Miller, out of the way and supporting them. No jeering. No booing. Lets cheer the good stuff they do and encourage or keep quiet when they get it wrong. The last thing we want is for players to dread going on to the pitch and playing for us. They always play worse when they are getting stick from the fans. For me - I will have to buy a roll of Gaffa tape to keep my mouth shut, BUT it could be worth it!

I love to tease some of your fans, but be realistic. You have two strikers that scored regularly last season, albeit in the CCC. They are new to the Prem, and will take a few weeks to adjust to the extra pace of the defenders there. Strikers thrive on confidence, and a couple of goals for each will do wonders.

The area that was a worry for you last season was defence, and you appear to have bought well there. If other teams don’t score bucketloads, you are in with a chance if your strikers hit some of the form they had last season.

As for Phillips. He is a good striker at CCC level, but is getting older. This brings a couple of problems. He will slow down, and he will become more injury prone. (How many games did he miss last season.) You don’t need that in the Prem. It is not a luxury to be afforded for a few goals he might score, and will slow down the development of your younger strikers that can only come with games under their belts. Miller and Bednar will start to score, in my opinion. Moore looked good for a couple of seasons at Villa. He could yet do well for you.

I hope you stay up, if for no other reason that it will guarantee us six points when we come up next season. Quit the doom and gloom. It does nothing for you.

We WILL be above the drop zone and have all things to look forward to, so please add your comments after 10 games and I would like to see you with an open mind up to that point. I aam also surprised there has been no comment from the club. We have signed a couple of very good defenders and I would have thought we would be parading them. We need some reassuring words from TM. I am sure the board and management wanted reinforcements up front as much as the fans. This isn’t the time for mud slinging but a time for everyone to pull together. Our strikers will do the business, after Bednar an d Miller’s efforts last year they deserve a chance. I dont think TM will play 451 that often but he picks a formation for individual games and circumstances within them. we will be okay!

  73. Samra4WBA said:

Well thats it then - albion have done the predictable and shot themselves in the foot - no goals from open play - no wins and no strikers especially no kevin philips.

After the Everton game - TM was questioned about albion failing to score from numerous opportunities ? He said…

We were top scoring team last season (championship) and my strikers are more than cable of scoring

I don’t know if he knows what division he is in. Let me tell you TM and JP were in the Premiership - the best league in the world - with some of the worlds best keepers, defenders ,midfielders`and strikers - SO WAKE-UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE.

Let me just put everybody in the picture and if they don’t like it, then tthey are just fooling themselves - its called Relegation.

I know its only three games but I thought at least two strikers would be in by transfer deadline but no - we will have to with Miller who can’t score at the moment, Bedner - whose trying, Moore - god knows whats happen to him - hasn’t scored for albion yet, Beattie,Shergil - don’t bother.

How many midfielders and defenders does TM need ? Its like recruting for an army !

At least Stoke and Hull are showing signs of having a go - albion are just playing pretty football with no end result - thats because the strikers are not upto Prem level…

Albion with their yellow tops think they are Brazil with style of play but all they are - are Brazillian Nuts - just good for cracking under pressure…

I’m sorry if I upset fans but I’m sick and fed up of seeing my beloved albion lose when we should have won - these points lost might prove costly at the end of the season. Ask anybody about albion - they all say one thing - where are the goals going to come from - just listen to the pundits for example on MOTD

We are a YO-YO club and we are are on Holiday for the 2008-2009 football season - do u get what I mean….

Oh by the way - I’m not beiing negative but living in a real world and if albions fortunes do change this season and they stay up - I will be more than gladly take a mauling of words that is - regarding albion…

Romsley Baggie I tend to agree with most the points here. There is too much negativity. Last night on WM I said it was disappointing that we have got no one as we do not seem to have a striker who is on form. However in May we would all have said that Bednar and Miller should be able to do something in the prem and well as you say Luke Moore has not had much opportunity yet to play in his proper role. If these guys get a goal then the confidence will return and hopefully we will be away. My bigger concern is the shirt sponsor and the obvious lack of commercial effort being put in their to get a deal. The more we waste time the less revenue that comes in from that and its really making us look unprofessional…JP sort it out someone in that team needs to go for not sorting this out before the season started. Now 3 games the shame is growing !!

There have been nearly 70 comments on the subject of strikers so this must emphasise all of our concerns. As I said several weeks ago on this comment column, we needed to replace two of our best players in Kevin Phillips and Zoltan Gera and we have not done so. Whatever the rights and wrongs of the negotiations with Phillips we should have offered him the 2 year contract that he was seeking, particularly as we had no-one else in mind to replace him. We all want to stay in the Premiership and Phillips would have helped us to score goals which we so desperately need.
Kim can play on the right, if necessarily, but we only have Moore and McDonald to replace Phillips and they havn’t even scored yet! I am not happy with playing with a lone striker in any case, particularly at home. Miller lacks anticipation as well as natural positional sense which Phillips has in abundance. Last season, most of,if not all of Miller’s goals came as a result of playing alonside Phillips. We now need to give someone else a chance, such as Bednar or Slusarski with Moore alonside him.We need to get at least one point a game if we are to survive and to do that we need goals. So Tony, please don’t go defensive!!
