Albion confirm Valero capture

valero.jpegAlbion have confirmed they have completed the club record £4.7million signing of Real Mallorca midfielder Borja Valero - but not in time to play against Everton.

The 23-year-old playmaker has signed a four-year contract, plus a further year’s option in the club’s favour, after passing a medical.

Valero becomes the Baggies’ ninth summer signing, taking their close-season spending past the £20million mark. The transfer eclipses the £3.5million Albion paid Cardiff for striker Robert Earnshaw in August 2004.

Baggies boss Tony Mowbray believes Valero could be the missing link in his team.

He said: “I’m delighted to welcome Borja to the club. From a footballing point of view, he possesses many of the attributes I like in a player.

“He has got great technical ability and weight of pass, has an excellent work rate and an eye for a goal. Borja can link up the play from back to front and he will enhance the excellent midfield options we already possess.

“I don’t think he will have any problems settling into our team, or playing in the Premier League, although he will obviously need some time to adjust to the English game.

“Bringing in new players is all about raising the quality of the squad and creating competition for places. Although we’ve paid a record fee for Borja, he has still got to earn his place in the team.”

Excellent signing. Pity could not play in time but this shows real ambition. Just get the defence sorted now and I honestly believe we can get a top ten finish. Would welcome your thoughts gentlemen.

Who says he can’t play tomorrow? I thought, so long as he’d signed prior to 5pm the day before, he could?
Over £20 mill spent. More like it Albion!

Reading the Spanish web sites it becomes obvious that Albion have signed a player of the highest quality He is rated marginally behind the midfield players in the Spanish team that won the Euoropean championship and is younger than most of them and still improving. It’s a major coup for Jeremy Peace and Tony Mowbray.I hope Mr Peace doesn’t relinquish control of the club. He deserves to be there when the success comes

  6. Ant Lowe said:

top notch signing, i think it shows how far we have come under mowbray!

i’m not the biggest fan of peace, but fair play to him, he’s put up the money for everything mowbray has asked for, and i don’t think the spending will end with valero!

    bring on tomorrow!!!!

    At last!

Can’t help but wonder just WHO will be the eventual midield 4/5?

Reckon this puts paid to the other ‘muted’ midfield targets?

One more question Tony…Any chance of a new striker on the horizon?

    “Come on you Baggies”

  8. Albion Fan 16 said:

Quite right Nedball… i thought it was going to collapse! hope i will see him tomorrow! this Jonas Olsson looks good! still a Amazing signing.

all we need now is a commanding centre back and a proven prem striker.

  9. Dave said:

Fantastic news, I was getting worried that this wouldn’t happen.

Shepherd, I think we could be ok with our defence, It’s where the goals are gonna come from, thats the problem. Another striker and we’ll do fine.

  10. AMS said:

Worth the wait this week. Well done TM and JP. Gera - was this the ambition you were hoping for. I think he will miss us more than we will now miss him. Now to get another three or four and we will be set up.

This is a relief….Great signing and I can’t wait to see us at full strength.

    COME ON YOU BAGGIES

    1. Lord Shepheard I still feel we are a centre half and a striker short. I don’t think we should get too carried away, top 10 no chance I really can’t see it but 12, 14 possibility. At least we can’t accuse JP of not spending some of the money we have accumalated over the past few years. I honestly believe though if we stay clear of injuries and add a little more quality at the back and front of the pitch we will stay up. Make no bones about it this is a tough tough league staying up has to be our only realistic target. I’m not being pesamistic just realistic. One thing is for sure it’s going to be a rollercoaster ride once again, can’t wait for tommorrow let’s roar em onto victory!.

Once again well done JP and TM top notch the club is in safe hands.

Yes, they are considering renaming it, since I hear that Pfizer might be interested. Its been suggested they call it the “The Viagra Stand”, Erected, 2008.

Apparently, if they ever get promoted, they believe it is the only way they might stay up!

Of course, there is always the more traditional Plan B. For this one, they prefer that the letters “molineux” remain in the Title, to reflect their former, fallen, Wolves status.

That simple title is, “Ex Lions, Um …”

BTW - To “A Lover” of football, “Valero” is Class …

  49. Tipton Wolf said:

    1. top 10 lmao, you are going down, once a small club always a small club. UP THE OLD GOLD AND BLACK TAKING YOUR PLACE IN THE PREMIERSHIP NEXT SEASON, GET IN THERE.

    Shadrag,
I’m off for a week, so I won’t be able to reply t your lovely messages for a bit, sorry.
1 - Scott Carson is an England international!!
2 - Did you not read the story? Despite initial interest from several parties, no form offers came through…..still people interested :-p
3 - My Nan could’ve predicted that, and she’s been dead for 14 years!
    4 - See point 3
5 - We haven’t currently got a shirt sponsor, you are correct. However, the fact that we’ve still got 3 companies vying to be our main club sponsor as opposed to throwing a picture of a man on a horse on the front isn’t a bad thing!!

Well done for only ever making 5 predictions ever by the way……take some balls that!!

All the nonsense posts about Valero not gonna sign, that we weren’t going to get promoted (never mind win the league) last season etc….they obviously don’t count as you didn’t predict them then?

Off to the match now, then it’s a week without you Shadrag…..shucks! Love you xxxxx

Good signing, but big money signings dont always work out and get the results you expect them to produce ,but i hope thats not the case and you stay up, and hopefully our good start will carry on for the rest of the season, so we can join you in the prem then bring on our derbys
