Wolves eye Higginbotham as target

higginbotham.jpegWolves have received a firm ‘hands-off’ from Hearts in a new bid to sign Christophe Berra – as Sunderland defender Danny Higginbotham emerged as a contender to replace Jody Craddock.

With Craddock ruled out for three months with a broken foot and 12 days of the transfer window left, Wolves’ defensive search has intensified. Clubs have agreed to extend the window to midnight on September 1.

Wolves have enquired about Higginbotham, who is one of ‘two or three’ on their target list, but contrary to reports, no bid has been made. It seems unlikely he will be allowed to leave, unless the Black Cats sign Anton Ferdinand, as they have just five defenders.

Boss Mick McCarthy also added that transfer-listed Darren Ward is unlikely to be allowed to leave during Craddock’s absence.

Wolves have already had two bids of £1million and £1.5million rejected by Hearts for Berra. They have received another big knockback in their bid to land the Jambos captain.

“They’re not selling him,” said McCarthy, who denied rumours that West Ham defender Daniel Gabbidon watched Saturday’s game.

“They want to build a team around him. It’s like someone ringing us up about Michael Kightly – he’s not for sale. Someone might say ‘we’ll come back’ and we’d say ‘no, naff off!’”

McCarthy has cover in Neill Collins and Ward, but he is hoping to make a new signing.

He said: “I’ve still got Neill Collins, ‘Stears’ and Darren so we’re not completely bereft of centre-halves. Neill has been excellent since he’s been here. Whenever he’s been called upon, he always does a solid job.”

As for revising plans to sell Ward – included in a reserve side to travel to Wigan today – McCarthy said: “With Jody out, that lessens Darren’s chances of going, but it suits him fine to stay.”

Of the loan market, McCarthy added: “That will always be considered.”

There are two sides to every coin and regarding the centrehalf issue which has been ongoing for two years at the Mol., we have had to make do and mend while Mic-Mac ‘n Moxey tell us they just are not out there to be had.

On the flip side of the coin; a Bristol City CH broke his cheek on Saturday. Within TWO DAYS they had signed a 26 year old international CH, albeit on a long term loan.

It seems the right quality IS out there for the right price or deal if you really want to do it.

Re 3 and 5 - so you’re telling me that if a good player is available for us to sign, we shouldn’t bother purely on the basis that he plays for Sunderland? Tell me this - is there a diagnosed medical condition for your lack of intelligence or is it just general narrow-minded stupidity? Actually, with pseudonyms like ‘wolveswolves’ and ‘wembley66′, you needn’t answer that question…

Hope the Higginbotham signing comes off, he’s a very good defender at this level, as proven when he won player of the season for the Clayheads in 06/07… he would be a quality addition to our team.

Sunderland paid £2.5m which could have been £3m with clauses just one year ago on winning promotion which means 2 things: 1) he must be at least a decent player with premiership ability, 2) If we got him for anything like £1.25m that’s got to be a good price. If we haven’t bid for him, WE SHOULD!

With twelve days to go for the transfer window, isn’t it a bit late just to be drawing up lists but not making bids!

I guess from Roy Keane’s point of view Higginbotham’s exit is a no-no unless Keane manages to sign Anton Ferdinand. Wolves have probably made an enquiry and been rejected. Now Moxey is probably poised over the fax machine waiting for Ferdinand to sign–then he’ll make an offer for Higginbotham.

There may be other targets that depend on their present clubs buying first too.

Michael Mancienne is still with Chelsea this season. And aren’t there any lower-division centre-backs who would be better than nobody?

Before Craddock’s injury, we were thin on the ground in central defence. This looks like a serious crisis for a club aiming for automatic promotion!

    I can’t believe people are nocking him because he plays for Sunderland. They’re a premiership side and how many ex-sunderland players have we actually got;
Craddock: Mick didn’t buy him, good player
Collins: not that bad for £150K (you get what you pay for)
Stephen Elliot; not in mick’s plans, half decent.
Higginbotham won player of the season for Stoke before being sold to a premiership club for £3m. How can you then draw the conclusion that he’s a Stoke reject and we should become Sunderland because it would be cheaper! I can’t believe what some people ‘think’, MINDLESS IDIOTS! I bet my nan knows more about football than some of you lot.

At least we have had a bit of communication from the club on the matter and MM has explained there stance is like ours was with kites over the summer so that’s fair enough. I read walsall boss mullen is after a striker so maybe a 500k plus elliot bid for gerrard? I think that would be a good idea and kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Also after that I wouldn’t mind seeing one more in on loan as well then I would be happy.

According to the local Sunderland paper, senior sources at Wolves are denying all knowledge of this.
MM knockers need to look at the signings we have made and what they are worth now - Ebanks-Blake, Kightly, Jarvis, Foley, Elokobi, Henry and Keogh. This easily makes up for the bad signings - Elliot etc.
He does shoot himself in the foot though with Collins. As the man possesses a basic lack of pace and can be clumsy, how can he say excellent and solid?

  41. Greg Cooper said:

Re 35 - yes, that is because West Brom are in the Premier League and we are in the Championship. Our potentially weak defence may be the only thing keeping us out of the Premiership. If we have to pay over the odds to strenghen it in the middle…then thats what we have to do. Admittedly it would be nice to pick up a bargain but you can’t do that all the time in every position, especially in defense. We need a Premiership quality centre half & they just don’t come cheap. News flash…Premiership players want Premiership wages!

I’d still like to see us pay Bobo Balde’s wages for a season on a free transfer…he’d have the same impact as John De Wolf…the greatest defender i’ve ever seen in a Wolves shirt. I think discounting him cause of his wage demands is crazy, when we’d pay 2-3m in transfer fees alone on a more economic player that would still have to be paid anyway.

If Mick really wanted him but not meet his ‘outrageous’ wage demands…couldn’t we pay a 1M+ transfer fee for him to Celtic for Celtic to then pay off the remainder of his contract. Then he could pay the millionaire minimum wage so it wouldn’t make our insecure stars feel under-valued.

    Simon :)

Craddock - A good championship defender but remember he was bought for the premiership, for which he was never good enough!
    Bjorkland - too slow
    Breen - too slow
    Collins - oh dear

Other players who have previously been relegated with Sunderland such as Ward, Elliott and Kyle have also been disapointing in a Wolves shirt. With the injury to JC we desperately need a replacement or two. I would bring in this Higginbotham as well.

The problem with some people is they live in a Championship Manager world. You can’t sign every decent player out there, there are books to be balanced and I for one am happy with the squad as it is. We’re not a club who will just chuck money at any old player anymore, and I think some people just can’t get over that fact.

93 Steway Of course books have to be balanced but also to gain promotion and the 60 million that goes with it you have to invest when needed that time is now.we already have a 2 million profit from sales therefore a further spend of say 3/4 million on the right players is not being unrealistic.whilst you might be happy with the squad most people realise the need for at least 1 quality centre half if not 2.that requires expenditure.

    94. LCW…I’m sure MM does know we need a CB (or two !!) and I don’t think that most of the posts here are telling MM what to do. I think they’re more trying to throw names in the ring to promote discussion between the fans. Like I said in my earlier post what worries me is that we seem to be penny pinching too often. This guy Berra sounds like the Real Mccoy so why don’t we make a good offer - not one that we think might get Hearts interested. I’m not a manager tor CEO but to me an offer of £3 to £4 million would make Hearts sit up and listen. And like I said earlier I would take this Higginbotham as well.

95 maltawolf, of course it needs investment, I understand that, but it is a long-term process. We can’t go around spending £3-4million on players anymore. We need to find the right players and I trust Mick to do this. Give him a chance and let him find the players HE thinks are capable of getting us promoted, rather than throwing names around, you might be pleasantly suprised. I’d rather have a manager taking his time and getting the right price for the right player, and £1.25m for Higginbotham would be a good deal for both parties.

If it isn’t a cheap player from Ireland its Sunderland? Any other teams playing these days? Come MM widen your horizon.

85 Agreed up to a point - We fear that N Collins long term hasnt the pace to cope with top end Championship/ bottom half Prem - if the 4 year contract is taken into consideration But with saying that Hyppia never had that much pace, but was very good at reading the game, anticipating etc

Noticed a mention of Gabor Gyepes going to Cardiff and linking up with Dave Jones again - Didnt we release him due to his injuries???

NB* Higginbotham good solution to a major problem that required attention now; Transfers involve alot of negotiations with third parties and because not everyone sees eye to eye straightaway they dont always get done quickly The “ideal” player is not always easy to sign up at a drop of a hat - Good replacement, experienced a little more pace and savvy

NB* With MM using our wingers home and away it would be good to get young Gobern fit again - Any news on the Gobern front???

Anno Domini - Stephen Ward (who we signed from Bohemians) was formerly at Sunderland at the same time as McCarthy.

E11 Wolf - As I recall we finished bottom of the premiership with the worst defensive record that season, which suggests that the former Sunderland defensive partnership of Butler and Craddock was not the success that you claim. Furthermore Butler then moved to Leeds when they were in the Championship and they are now in League One, so how can you say that Butler won a promotion with them?

I do agree that Collins (like any Wolves player) should be supported whilst hes wearing the shirt, but that doesn’t mean that we have to pretend that he was a good signing.

ok we all know Collins isnt a Terry or Ferdinand and never will be,..but at the moment he is what we have got,..so moan away but we have 2 choices, Boo him and probably knock what little confidence he has left out of him…OR show him that we all want Wolves to do well and while he is wearing our shirt get behind him!!
