Gran surprise for marathon

Sporty Pat Wootton, aged 70, is gearing up for the relay event to help raise money for charity to help her autistic grandson.

The grandmother-of-seven keeps herself fit by playing tennis every week and last completed the Great North Run in 2006. She will be leading the relay team on September 7 and will share the 13.1-mile course with two of her granddaughters, her daughter-in-law and a friend of the family.

Money raised will be going towards the National Autistic Society (NAS).

Pat, of Tettenhall, and a former medical secretary at Nuffield Hospital, decided to organise the run because her 12-year-old grandson Rupert Wellsbury has severe autism. Rupert attends Tettenhall Wood School.

Pat said: “We are keen to raise as much money as possible for the NAS.”
