Mark Davies spared Wolves’ blushes in the Carling Cup, says Tim Nash.
Paul Mullin’s 40th minute header had given League Two outfit Accrington Stanley a half-time lead, before Chris Iwelumo’s first goal for Wolves restored parity.
He followed on from his 73rd minute header with an extra-time goal to put Wolves in the lead for the first time, only for Ian Craney to restore parity in the 104th minute - just two minutes later.
Davies, on for Michael Gray just eight minutes earlier, gave Wolves the lead again before Accrington’s Robbie Williams was dismissed for a second bookable offence at the death.

how badly do we still need a good centre back?”shockin or wot!”but a wins a win but we can’t keep conceeding goals like this cus we’re gonna need to score three to win a game
Why wasn’t Jarvis given a run?
Oh my, oh my, Wolves are a total joke to modern day football, what a terrible performance….you will definately be getting relegated this season, Mick out!!!! Walsall are now better than Wolves for sure!!!!!
Don’t knock it. We’re in the next round and it was always going to be a battle. Look at the other results!!
Criticism, if needed, after 9-10 games.
Great win. Well done.
An extra-time win against the mighty Accrington Stanley! WOW!
Why am I not surprised?
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF JARVIS WAS INJURED? THE TEAM LACKED GENUINE WIDTH AND CREATIVITY WITHOUT KITES AND JARVO AND THE CENTRE MID WAS LEFT WANTING AT TIMES BUT THERE WAS NO DAVID JONES. DAN JONES STRUGGLED ON THE WING IN WHICH WAS HIS CHANCE TO IMPRESS ALL BE IT AGAINST A LEAGUE 2 SIDE, DEFENCE STILL A WORRY, STEERMAN LOOKS GOOD AT TIMES, COLLIN A NO-NO, ELOKOBI FOR ME WAS MAN OF THE MATCH, AND ON SATURDAY I WOULD START ILWELUMO UP FRONT WITH BLAKE,DAVIES LOOKED VERY SHARP AND QUICK WHE HE CAME ON WHICH MUST KNOW GIVE MICK A HEADACHE.LOOKING FORWARD TO SATURDAY, BUT WE STILL NEED A GOOD CENTRE HALF IF THIS TEAM IS TO PROGRESS.
Started in a similar vein to this last season and it never got better…desperately need to shore up the defence
loads of chances and possession, really needed somebody to put us at ease early on, great headers but for me the atmosphere at the back of the south bank was top really enjoyed hearing the banter - keep it up lads for ALL season well done
as i said last friday your going to need to score 3 goals to win and the opposition is gettin better it could be a long hard season for ya aye boing boing
I don’t know who else was there last night but the defence was a shambles. The entire back 4 went missing for their second goal and they had 2 or 3 late chances to take it to penalties.
If we play like on Saturday we will be stuffed.
so yow aint concentrating on the league then this year like you was last year when you went out aye boing boing
Wolves should not struggle against the likes of AS, but for some reason they made hard work of what should have been a training ground work out. If your going to let the lesser teams boss you like this, you’re going to struggle to even get into the play offs.
Come on Wolves, I have waited a long time for my second fave team to join us in the premiership.
Square pegs round holes all over again
Again the finishing was poor, should have had around 7 or 8. Defending attrocious again, Stearman looks like he’s trying too hard Collins did OK but did not involve himself enough when they attacked just looked for someone to mark. Blake made a difference when he came on but the supply to Vokes was not good and we had to rely on Iwelumo’s head for our first 2 goals. Davies’ finish ws pure class and I am really pleased for the lad. Hope he gets more chances, I feel a little sorry for Iwelumo on not getting his hatrick though. It looked like we should have killed the game off after 3-2 but both Blake and Keogh could have found Iwelumo (which was the easier option) and instead fluffed their attempts which were ruined by greed where the team should have come first.
Is it me or am I just worried that Keogh and SEB were a bit worried of losing their 1st team places to Iwelumo so decided not to give him the ball fr his hatrick??? Still it was Iwleumo’s hard work that earned Davies’ goal so with 2 goals and an assist that should surely push him ahead of Keogh for Saturday
Really pleased about the win but far too close for comfort.Shocking defence AGAIN,i suppose you cant even say it needs time to gel.Great to see Mark Davies back and what a dream return. No more than the lad deserved
Thought you did well to hang on for extra time after being behind for so long, then just when we thought you were playing for pens - you go and score.
What a proud night - in years to come they will call you pioneers of the carling cup !
LMAO !
Congratulations Mick on masterminding a tricky, hard fought victory over Accrington Stanley.
Anyway ………. must get ready for the Emirates on Saturday!
Freddy in Scotland says: Please buck up lads!
“My dad says if I drink milk one day i can play for wolverhampton wanderers”.
“Wolverhampton wanderers - who are they” ???
Great result guys I bet that has really frightened the Championship teams.
4 goals conceded in 2 games vs Plymouth Argyle and Accrington Stanley.
Looks like you’ll be able to take a nice looong holiday over Christmas Mick.
Problem is, its only August.
Well cheers mick! gives us all hope of going up this season doesn’t it!
He quoted “if we cant beat accrington then we have problems”
Well… we sure do have problems then. The first being yourself. Because we were lucky to get to extra time in the first place. 1-1 after 90mins, your having a laugh!
Great result, supporters given a real confidence booster watchin this game.
Load of rubbish.Get Ruud Gullit in now that he is available !!
Great result for you against the mighty AS
MM deserves the freedom of Wolvo, what a great manager you have, I can see this guy and your team meeting AS in the league next season, when you lot go down and AS go up.
Never mind another massive crowd at the mol.
Was it all the Clap everything people who turned up to pat super MM on the back for a job well done. Bet you are Proud of your mighty club today, and no S Ward last night
Ignore all the dross from Baggies fans, these games are never roll-overs at this part of the season, just look at all the other results last night. Though it’s a concern 2 goals were conceded AGAIN, seems every one else can see the need for a new centre half other than Mick.
When i heard the result i presumed you played your reserves, then i saw the team sheet this morning. At least you won, and at this stage it was important not to lose. Lets face it the league is your priority, although it has given some of my fellow fans some ammo in the banter i will refrain from joining in, after all we are at Arsenal on Saturday!!!
Spoke to a mate who went last night and to Plymouth on Saturday, he describes Stearman as a rabbit trapped in the headlights. Early days, give him a chance i said, he said are you kidding with the Wolves morons, another performance like that and he will be heckled and his confidence destroyed.
He hopes the good Wolves fans can drown out the morons this season, but alas, doubts it.
Accrington Stanley…ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, must dash..off to the Emirates!
I’ll read what others have said in a moment just so that I can give my honest thoughts without fear of them being off message…
The season starts with a draw and a narrow win in extra time against ‘mighty’ Accrington Stanley (who are they? exactly!)…
As much as I’d love to be sycophantic, it hardly has me brimming with confidence for the nine months ahead.
I’ll give McCarthy til mid-September to turn things around or be booted. If we lose the next match, I’ll go into a bookies and lay money on him being gone. This is looking suspciously like last season all over again and we all know what happened there…
Congratulations WWFC. No, hands up, I really mean it. Could have been a very tricky tie that getting one of the big guns in the first round, but you held your nerve and hung on for a deserved victory.
I’m not interested how we win as long as its a win. Last night, we won. Simple as. I’m fed up with the constant disrespect by some clubs’ fans, Wolves included, who constantly disregard other lesser teams as rollovers or training games. Its their cup final. They will pull out all the stops to try and win. Fair play to AC last night. Wolves needed to dig deep and we did. UP THE WOLVES ! !
to everyone thats asking jarvis picked up a slight knock against plymouth
your all saying ignore all those baggie fans, but the majority are actually right! i really dont understand some of our own fans especially ones who can put up with THAT last night. it was virtually our first team and we still look a complete farce. we should be seeing these poor teams off 3 or 4 nil. Take Ipswich for example, got beat first game at home to preston then come back and wallop Leyton Orient 4-1. As for the results last night, lol what results!? the only shock was Charlton losing to Yeovil and that was only because Pardew played his reserves. We are a joke at the minute, what was Mick’s excuses last night then? Because at first he said we have problems if we cant roll over Accrington Stanley. Well there you go then!
a tenna muppet will drop iwelemo?
7 Championship teams knocked out by lower oppositon last night; historically we would have been one of them.
However, this persisting central defence malaise is absurd. To have begun another season in this mis-shapen fashion is criminal.
Super super Mick!!!!
A wins a win and lets face it, they know how to play football in Lancashire.
Well done Wolves, roll on Saturday.
Start with 3 left backs on the pitch, play one of them on the right wing !!!
When all is not going well due to dis-jointed out of position players not knowing their job, bring on the saviour Keogh, put him on the right wing, then the left, then the right and finally the left again. Substitute your left footed full back, erm sorry rght winger, for a talented central midfielder….put him on the right wing.
Then witness the manager doing his nut as mistake after mistake unfolds……and you wonder why !!!!!!
Nice one MM, can’t wait to see what you come up with on Saturday !
32. agreed couldnt put it better. well done to Mark Davies aswell he deserves to be in the team on saturday i think…at least on the bench. plus there goalie was brilliant last night some of those saves where fantastic.
Get your insults in baggies, because we’re gonna be ripping you to pieces week in week out once the prem season starts. And it all starts this weekend. Don’t forgot to wear your brown trousers!! Your gonna get thrashed.
I’d rather see Wolves win 3-2 every match and have us on the edge of our seats, instead of last seasons attempts at defending our way to promotion. I just hope Mick keeps faith with the attacking style.
Never going anywhere the Mad MM way, and some of you still thhink that you have a chance of promotion, well you do , NO CHANCE.
This just gets better, and yes we could lose and get relegated, but we know that we can bounce back, something you lot can not do, never mind keep singing Super MM he’s doing a great Job. Just heard S Ward has been picked for the WW ladies team, they have more idea than Mad MM and super Terry
At least we are still involved - unlike at least five other Championship teams who went out to lesser lights.
Baggy1, H_B, terrywindowlickerbaggies.
I understand you are all getting ready for the Emerates.
Just make sure you take a spare calculator incase your first one overheats
Mind you lot from West Brom have more fingers & toes than the rest of us…………
lol
It’s true we’re getting our digs in while we can. You’ll have your fun very soon.
I have read reports about the match. I beleive that MM may well be out of Wolves by October if the teams performance doesn’t improve.
As for the baggies…I feel they will be relegated two seasons on the trot.
Premiership relegations teams this season….Stoke, Villa and the baggies.
40 - how will you be ripping us apart from the championship ?
I know we have ripped you apart season after season - but we are a prem team now.
You just concentrate on trying to beat teams like Plymouth.
20 nise one happy
We are so shakey at the back every time we conceed a foul its as good as a penalty- My nerves will not take it-Yes lets be critical after a few games but there is a lot of promise there off the subject of defence–Need someone in before the Window closes-Never mind getting us nearer the players and developing the ground give the funds to PLAYERS_INN please Mr. Morgan a good Centre Back-Well done to the team last night a pressure night, expectation from the 10,ooo was high and the players felt it–Crazey Dave
Have these so called baggies fans not got there own pages to write on. What the hell has this got to do with sandwell town. Just you wait till saturday. revenge is a dish best served cold!!!
we 8 albion
we are all going to have such a laugh at you baggies this season so if i was you lot i would be very very quiet.have fun saturday at the emerites its a long way home haveing lost 6-0 well thats my bet for the weekend
50,wilf, we already laffin at yow aye boing boing
mm said “if you cant beat teams like A.S.then youve got problems”.youve won so youve got no problems?
I work in W*st Br*m and meet alot of Albi*n fans. I can tell you one thing for sure, they are not looking forward to this season as much as last.
As for the Accrington Stanley “jokes” - if we’d hae won 10 nil, they would have still come.
Happy - ripping apart was a term for takin the pi$$ and as for taking an interest in the teams in our league, back at you pal. Concentrate on your own worries, there’s plenty.
But saying that - all the best - I hope you do stay up. Its good all round from a true footballing prospective.
Too many dead heads on this site now who know too little….apart from Grace - fingers and toes….I loved that.
How has a Wolves game suddenly turned into a Wolves, Baggie slanging match. Very sad indeed.
Can’t wait till the tesco’s kick off and the constant defeats lol

Is it me or am I just worried that Keogh and SEB were a bit worried of losing their 1st team places to Iwelumo so decided not to give him the ball fr his hatrick???
No, it’s not just you. I thought exactly the same. On the one occasion you refer to SEB gave it to Keogh when Iwulemo was better placed and Keogh predictably fluffed it. Was SEB trying to help out his old partner Keogh, because Keogh must surely be more worried. SEB was great how he got stuck in to win the ball and create those chances.
38 Brilliant!!
54 - yes it was a real suprise wasn’t it….
Does anyone remember when Hereford beat Newcastle? Of course you do. But if Newcastle had won 1-0 in the 119th minute after Extra Time, it would never have made the headlines. You won didn’t you? Moan about the tactics if you wish but not the result. It was a HUGE banana skin, Stanley’s Cup Final. In a month’s time it will just read Wulfies 3 - Accrington 2
